  • Summary: A lonely wanderer leaves her companions behind and answers a call from her soul....

She walked on into the elements. She wanted to quail away from the biting wind as it clawed at her, leaving behind motes of snow and ice. It nipped around her eyes, around her face. More than anything, she wished she could have brought warm furs and garments along with her for this.

But it could not happen. Bringing anything with her was impossible. Bringing any of them with her was impossible. The journey was not one they could make together.

The miles mounted atop the miles. It scarcely seemed possible that her legs could carry her across such distances - saying nothing of the exhaustion and weakness she fought against. Now and then, she looked back at the trail behind her. Little footsteps, impressed into pale snow, standing out sharply despite shifting wind and winter. She pressed onward.

The sense of summoning pulsed through her heart, a clarion call more felt than heard. Come here. She came. Not coming was no option at all - for in a very profound way, it was a call from within herself. A voice that lay as close to her very mind and soul as it was possible for such a voice to be.

She obeyed herself. Obeyed that call. Let it guide her to an upthrust of cold, black rock, half-buried within the scarred landscape of the continent. Only a narrow gash in the rugged rock face hinted at something else there. She stood before that entryway, taking a moment to collect herself. The journey had been too long, and her body was simply too spent and too devoid of vigor to make it without rest - but here, now, she could feel a spark of something.

A spark of something she had felt in the hours, the day, before. An awakening that came with the baring of her companion's soul to her. That the feelings she had felt from that other heart were earnest and true, and could be spoken for the first time without shame, doubt or selfish ends.

The companion she had left behind.

Again she looked back, towards the trail, towards the spot where she knew the other still slept in the far distance. Her absence would become clear soon enough. Her path would become clearer shortly after that. Some bonds defied distance.

Shaking off a little snow, she hopped forward, over a few snow hillocks, and through that cavernous entrance - and before her, a shimmering light of pale blue shone, before dispersing into a thousand butterfly-shaped motes of light and fading away. That shining barrier opened up the ivory columns and shining tiles beyond it. A place forgotten to time.

Gazing up at the long-forgotten gateway, she spread her little wings and began to fly inward.

Catenna would come after her. After hearing what she said during the encounter with Riima, the Owlet was certain of it.

The Owlet was counting on it.
