  • Log: Sewer Survey
  • Cast: Elhaym van Houten, Azoth, Fei Fong Wong, Citan Uzuki, Emeralda Kasim
  • Where: Luca - Port District
  • Date: October 18, 2020
  • Summary: In the wake of everything that has happened around Bevelle and Yuna, the Black Wolves (and adjacent... and new friends) have opted to investigate the sewers under Luca. You know, in case they ever need to come through here in the near future.

DG: A party led by Elhaym van Houten is now entering Luca Sewers.
DG: Party formation is now over. An Entry Challenge will now be drawn and displayed to the party.

The sewers of Luca are maze-like, even for a city of its age and size--and
several outlets lie just beyond the city walls. Reaching them is easy, but
actually accessing them is difficult. Grates that dump into the sea can get
clogged by barnacles, algae, and other marine life, while other outlets have
been sealed off by rockslides, or bent and warped by the claws of Sinspawn.
Regardless of what's happened to the outlet you've chosen, you're going to
have to get past it with raw force.

Try not to alert the guards.

<Pose Tracker> Elhaym van Houten has posed.

SOMEWHERE NEAR BEVELLE

Elly cried, a lot. But it was happy tears, despite apologies that flowed like a cascade. She had embraced Fei, and Emeralda, separately, together, all at once. She had been so sorry. She was so glad to see them again.

This did not go on forever. (Well, the good parts did.) In time she shared a story, several stories. A resolve to rebuild, when everything settles down. To see if they can build a glass-bottle window wall in that little house in Adelhyde.

But...

Unfortunately, you cannot sit and cling together forever.

(Even if it's fun to try.)

SO, HERE, NOW

"I can't believe we never lost this," Elly states, holding up a somewhat rust-raggled key. Behind her: a door into...

... sewers??

"It must be a miracle, or 'Fate'. Azoth, thank you for joining us. I hope that it isn't too scary for you here on Spira... it's kind of nice, other than the Fiends and the war and... Sin... mm," Elly says, turning to unlock the gate door.

* Dungeon access achieved!

"So... this is a pretty fortified area," Elly continues. "But this access would allow us to enter and leave Luca easily. What's more, if we can chart out a route in some detail, it would help us with any missions in this area. Or if we just want to sneak in. Or if Mr. Rin needed to move a shipment around."

Elly waits to come in - but that's because there is... A SURPRISE FOR EVERYONE.

A piece of vaguely jack-shaped konpeito-style candy from a little paper bag she had bought on the road! WHY DID ELLY BRING SNACKS TO A SEWER RECONNAISANCE?

Do not ask why, my friends. Ask instead, why not?

DG: Elhaym van Houten has used her Tool Inventory Clutter toward her party's challenge, Disused Entrance.
<Pose Tracker> Azoth has posed.

Seeing Elly and Emeralda again makes his circuits burn with guilt remains an unexpressed secret. His overrides seized him, made him fight, targeting Emeralda with every shred of violence he had to give. He remembers the look on Elhaym's face when she stood in to protect Emeralda... and yet, all the same, she offered him mercy.

But that was with a much different look, with much different conduct. Now, it's Azoth, human enough with skin and smiles and everything, indistinguishable from the mysterious construct fighting for Solaris at the gate.

He can, in this secrecy, make up for a little of that, now. Hopefully better than he did for Ivan.

"I'm glad to come along," Azoth responds brightly. "It's quite different from Filgaia... but I don't hate it. It's worth trying to protect, too." From Sin and Fiends and war and everything that would try to strangle Spira of its unique beauty. Not that Azoth always gets a say in what he might protect.

BUT THEN: Candy. Azoth cannot eat candy. He can, however, now possess candy, and this is almost assuredly just as good (especially for a robot that doesn't know what he's missing). He gingerly takes his gift as if it might crumble at a brush of his fingers, and looks to Elly with touched shock, as if she has given him the world. It's the first candy he's ever received.

He does not eat it. He tucks it away, protectively, for safe keeping, but with inspiration in his mechanical heart. Then, he pulls a photon saber's hilt, spinning it playfully in his grasp before flicking it on to try and help cut through the debris blocking their path.

DG: Azoth has used his Tool Falk's Photon Blade toward his party's challenge, Disused Entrance.
<Pose Tracker> Fei Fong Wong has posed.

Fei Fong Wong paid Wen Kinoc's death little mind. And, well, perhaps that is what Wen Kinoc really earned after his disregard of the many who died for him and his cause. He is not nearly as kind as Yuna. Really, not in the ballpark.

But he is happy to see Elly has survived, obviously, and gives Elly and Emeralda at least one hug each and he reassures her over and over that he's just glad she's safe. Bevelle could fly out into space for all he cares past that.

He perks up at the idea of that house in Adlehyde. It's been so long since he's SEEN Adlehyde that he's kind of excited at the very idea of getting to see it again. Maybe next chapter??? He hopes so!

"You do hold onto a lot of stuff," Fei admits, thinking of her INVENTORY CLUTTER more like INVENTORY HOARDING.

"Hey Azoth," Fei says, offering a hand. "Name's Fei. I don't think we really talked before but nice to meetcha." He pauses. "Thanks for looking after Gwen."

DOES HE SEE THROUGH AZOTH?

No he's completely clueless as usual. "It might be nice to be able to sneak in. Even if I'm tempted to just let the Guard and Yevon fight each other forever."

"Ooh! Snacks...!" Fei will take ONE. "Which flavor do you want, Emeralda?"

He munches on his own before ripping a grate off its hinges.

...subtly.

<Pose Tracker> Citan Uzuki has posed.

    BEFORE

Eventually, when the dust had settled and wounds had been treated, there had been enough time for reunions and rest. But, unfortunately, to misquote the common saying, there is no rest for the saints or the sinners. They're all still wound up into the war that grips Spira, like it or not, so perhaps it's only suitable that--

    NOW

--they're making plans in advance for what may yet come.

"I see! That was rather foresighted of you, Elly," says Citan, nodding the once as Elly produces the key that permits access into the sewers. "I wonder whether the Guard are aware of this hole in their defenses... Well then, I suppose we will soon find out."

The fact that Yevon had opted to fight a war on two fronts makes the doctor uneasy about what they intend... and whatever still-buried defenses they may hold, particularly after Lombardia's rescue. And after that operation in Bevelle, it may be best to keep their options open. They're at a noted disadvantage here, and 'sitting this one out' is not an option.

A small bag is handed his way. He takes it and considers it and its contents quizzically before realizing that it's

    candy.

"...Er, thank you, Elly," he says, surreptitiously attempting to tuck it away somewhere. He may attempt to pawn it off on someone else later. Sweets are not his thing.

The gate may be open, but it's far from the only obstacle in their path. A large grate has fallen off a nearby wall to partially obscure the passage within, and so here is where the doctor pulls a book from out of his bag. He takes a moment to flip through it and reviews a particular page before then delivering a jab for the detached grate, right at a weak point.

He then pauses for a moment, watching Azoth as the young 'man' similarly has a go at some of the debris. He takes a moment to readjust his glasses. "Your name was... Azoth, correct?"

DG: Fei Fong Wong has contributed a Brute Basic Action toward his party's challenge, Disused Entrance.
DG: Citan Uzuki has used his Tool Acupressure Guide toward his party's challenge, Disused Entrance.
<Pose Tracker> Emeralda Kasim has posed.

Emeralda had wanted to run off and find Elly as soon as she was late. She had become increasingly worried and anxious the whole week she was missing and she had probably been about to do something reckless.

But she hadn't had to. Elly had come back to them. Emeralda wasn't sure why *she* was apologizing (to her, the only people that should be were in the Yevonite church) but she didn't much care; she was just glad that Elly was safe and sound.

And, apparently, willing to adventure. Again.

Emeralda was more than willing to come along to the sewers, even if the last time she came here she'd been attacked several times and nearly fallen into the... well, it's a sewer. They have a key. They're, if not supposed to be here, at least find it easily accessible.

"Some of the people aren't very nice," Emeralda says, "but others are. And they shouldn't have monsters or war either, even the ones that aren't." She got, let's say, a mixed reaction one time when she'd been a little more blatant than she should have been. "And I'm Emeralda!" Which he probably knew, but she didn't know that.

Emeralda is given candy. Unlike Azoth, this is not the first time, but Emeralda is happy to get it *every* time. "Thanks!" she says. "I want the red one." She likes red.

She has not recognized Azoth as the mechanical being she fought, but she *has* recognized him as a mechanical being. He sounds different, feels different. Emeralda has been looking at him occasionally, usually when she thinks he will not notice (this has mixed success, as Emeralda is not as subtle as she thinks she is).

Emeralda does not deal with pushing things out of the way. That's pretty handled.

DG: Emeralda Kasim has contributed a Brute Basic Action toward her party's challenge, Disused Entrance.

<Pose Tracker> Elhaym van Houten has posed.

Azoth HAS candy. Perhaps he can Use it somehow. How? Nobody is looking if he just wants 10 EP back. (In reply to him, Elly smiles.)

"Well this I actually had to buy with the fourteen gil I had left in a pocket," Elly says to Fei. "I have another packet but otherwise, I'm fresh out. That's honestly part of why I'm glad to do this... they'll probably have something worth selling, right? I suppose I could try to fish again, but there aren't as many restaurants here..."

Elly nods at Citan's words, and looks towards Emeralda. She raises an index finger to her lips and then makes a pinching gesture, as if she's sealing something up. This is clearly sign language, because she continues on to speak softly. "We have to be quiet..."

Soon enough a grate succumbs to both accu-pressure and accu-lasers. Emeralda, meanwhile, receives the red one. (Elly takes purple.)

The blockage clear, the group can move further forwards...!

DG: Citan Uzuki has drawn a new Challenge.

=======================<* CHALLENGE - A Helpful Clue? *>========================
|Type: Exploration |Dungeon Ability: Wits |Challenge Rating: 1 |
---------------------------< Challenge Information: >---------------------------
A series of heavy metal levers protrude from a stone panel on the wall.
This, of course, is some sort of control meant to raise and lower the water
level in a cistern nearby--if you wanted to get colloquial, you could even
call it a switch puzzle. Someone has even left helpful markings beside each
switch, and if they mean anything at all, they might be some sort of key.
Provided one can figure them out, of course.
=Dungeon Conditions: Stupify==================================================
<Pose Tracker> Citan Uzuki has posed.

To add to everything else that's happened, there is the factor of That.
    The Anima Relic, Simeon.

There is much at play and equally as much at stake. It's for no small reason he'd agreed with Elly's plan. The more they can prepare for what might come -- whatever it might be -- the better. In Spira, there is no 'away' from the matters at hand.

But for now, the path before them is clear... and includes the bonus of candy. Perhaps he'll save it for Midori. ...If Emeralda or someone else doesn't end up getting a free bag of candy first, in the meantime.

The sewers are quiet. Only the occasional slosh of water or drip from the ceiling intrudes upon their path. Every so often Citan pauses a moment, as if to listen for something -- guards, monsters -- but the passage remains absent of any indications of danger. Or, indeed, any obstacles in their way.

Until they reach a cistern that blocks the path forward. "Hmm..." the doctor considers, rubbing at his chin. "I do not believe I would care to swim through that. Fortunately, I do not believe we will have to -- that is a 'cistern', a storage tank if you will, and thus it must have some means of draining it -- aha!"

There, on the wall, is a series of switches. A scratch has been made next to each one. ...However, they are not the most intuitive of markings, being an X, a -, a |, and a O.

"Hmm..." Citan muses, then after a moment's digging through his belongings, produces a...

    ...camera?

"Perhaps some perspective on the matter is what we need," he says, snapping a shot of the cistern and its adjoining channels.

"Now then..." he continues, squinting at the photo soon after.

DG: Citan Uzuki has used his Tool Strauss Camera toward his party's challenge, A Helpful Clue?.
<Pose Tracker> Fei Fong Wong has posed.

Fei Fong Wong doesn't comment regarding the Anima Relic. NOT THAT HE KNOWS WHAT ONE IS. I'd be pretty wild if he did right?? Nobody even gave him that particular plot exposition yet! But as it stands, he hasn't figured out how to tell Elly about Siegfried's...situation. Like, IS he even alive? Is he not alive? Is he just a consciousness trapped within Janus Cascade forever?? Is that a fate worse than death????

Fei is thinking about that. And munching on his candy. He picked BLUE flavored candy. He seems to like it.

"Did you get those here?" He asks, regarding the candy.

He nods to Emeralda quietly, grateful at her well--KINDNESS really. She's not wrong, but that doesn't mean he's not tempted sometimes. Maybe there's a reason he gets along as well with Cecilia as he does sometimes.

"So hm. Markings huh..." He draws out a pencil and scribbles them down on a piece of paper so he can keep track of them more easily, along wiht positioning.

"Well, the more we raise and lower the water, the more likely we'll draw attention but..."

He tries pulling a lever. "This one?"

DG: Fei Fong Wong has used his Tool Artist's Toolkit toward his party's challenge, A Helpful Clue?.
<Pose Tracker> Azoth has posed.

"Mm," Azoth says, to confirm his name, keeping to the designated quietness as decreed by Elly. What doesn't take sound is giving Fei a very enthusiastic thumbs up. Yeah!! He learned that from him!!

With Emeralda's attention more keenly on him -- and Azoth's more on her, both because of a battle once before, and because he knows she is a little like him -- he's less observant of Citan's watch. Instead, he's giving Emeralda small smiles when he catches her gaze, hoping she doesn't suspect they've met before. Azoth is indeed just a bit different, especially to the keen of sense. Moving not quite the right way for a person. No breath, no heartbeat. The darker it gets, the more his eyes glow, and Ragnell's pointed out what a problem that can be.

But GASP! A puzzle! There is, truly, still joy in the world.

Azoth practically bounces to the switches, greeting them with a smile and... wave? (Yes, this is really the same killbot from the gate, we swear.) He sets his hand to the wall, sliding his palm over and feeling for vibrations and currents beyond it for any additional insight on how the switches connect, then glances over the sewers, looking for stains on the wall that might match the different water levels it's ever been set at.

But Fei starts pulling levers, and Azoth's attention immediately goes to parsing through the options through second hand trial an error.

"I think... maybe try this?" he offers, pointing a sequence to attempt next.

DG: Azoth has used his Tool Oculus ex Machina toward his party's challenge, A Helpful Clue?.
<Pose Tracker> Emeralda Kasim has posed.

Emeralda will happily take any spare candy you care to offer her.

She's behaving, though - she got her red one and she's pretty happy with it, and beyond that she's been relatively quiet. Certainly no louder than the rest of the party, even when she roves forward a little bit to see what's there or falls behind because she thought she saw something.

She definitely saw Azoth's glowing eyes. But she didn't say anything about them. Yet, anyway. Is it good manners, that she didn't see the point, or because she wants to avoid questions of her own? It's hard to tell.

"We should go treasure hunting," she informs Elly. "That would get us all the money we need! Right?" Emeralda does not yet really work her budget out and isn't entirely sure how much they need, but if pirates and bandits want to hunt treasure, it must be enough for a group.

While she wasn't much help at cleaning debris away, Emeralda hustles up to the levers. Citan and Fei might be trying to puzzle it out ahead of time, but Emeralda's only real solution is to start wiggling levers. She's not alone in this, but Emeralda isn't doing much planning - she's just trying to get things to work out by trial and error.

"We could swim if we have to," Emeralda says, before hesitating. She looks at Azoth. "CAN you swim?" That might be as close as she's come to asking him what he is.

DG: Emeralda Kasim has contributed a Wits Basic Action toward her party's challenge, A Helpful Clue?.
<Pose Tracker> Elhaym van Houten has posed.

Elly remains pleasantly ignorant of Anima Relics. For now. She proceeds forwards, lingering near Fei and Emeralda. On the topic of the candy, she nods once. "There was that little row in the travel agency... it's why I got two. There was a sale!"

Then they come to a puzzle. Elly's lips purse to the side for a moment as if to say 'oh no', although others are ably diagnosing the issue. She crouches down to peer into the water, if very cautiously...!

She does glance at Azoth with that question, for a moment, though she offers, "If we have to cross it, I can make ice, at least. I don't know if I can quite manage a bridge, but at the least you'd have something to float on..."

Metal groans in the distance. A low roar follows after, growing louder by
 the second. A flood?

 Yep, a flood.

It seems that a group of Fiends--Sahuagin--figured out how to loosen a
floodgate, and now they're frolicking in the resulting tidal wave. That
tidal wave is now rushing at your party, and if you can't get away from it,
it's going to be bad times.
=Dungeon Conditions: Injure, Fright===========================================
<Pose Tracker> Citan Uzuki has posed.

While the bulk of his attention in that fight, before, had been taken up by attempting to handle Meseru and keeping an eye on Fei, Citan had still noticed a few things about Azoth then.

Here, he notices a few more. It stands to reason that someone like the doctor quickly reaches a particular conclusion. "I see," he says, nonetheless, since neither hell nor high water (indeed) can prevent Citan Uzuki from having a conversation when he wants to have one, "You must forgive me, things have been, ah... chaotic of late. Wherever did you say that you were from, again?"

There is a pause as Fei offers his own consideration. "...Indeed, we should endeavor to make as few changes as we are able," he says, agreeing with his assessment.

The matter of the cistern switches, at least, seems to be relatively simple. By cross-referencing his photograph -- the channel is in a plus-sign configuration -- along with Fei's sketched analysis of likely configurations and Azoth's indepth analysis of which switch does what, they're able to drain the cistern!

Emeralda's toying with the switches doesn't hurt, meanwhile, in that it ruled out a few configurations. The good news, as Elly can confirm, is that at least the cistern wasn't prohibitively deep. You know, in the event that they had to ford that river. Or float across it, as the case may be.

"There, that should do it," says Citan, once the way is clear. "We should move quickly."

<Pose Tracker> Emeralda Kasim has posed.

"Yeah! Where did you come from?" Emeralda wants to know, too; she is curious about her new friend (well, acquaintance at this point, but give it time). She pulls another lever, which is the right one - while Emeralda really wanted to flip some switches, she is willing to take advice as to which switches to pull.

And so the cistern drains and allows them to cross. Emeralda walks carefully across the area that used to be flooded in case something is unstable, but it seems easy enough and pretty soon they're up on the other side. Seeing as she was told to move quickly, Emeralda starts walking faster. She has short legs, but she can more than keep up with the adults even if she has to hustle in bursts to do it. Sometimes she skips ahead and lets the others catch up instead.

There is a sound in the distance. Metal grinding, faint creaking; sounds like something moving. But it's not in the direction the team came from, so it's not something they set wrong on the cistern bypass (probably).

In a crossways with another tunnel, Emeralda stands on tiptoes, and then rises up a little higher (the alert might spot that her boots appear to have exaggeratedly thick soles, at least while she's balancing; when she drops flat-footed again her boots return to their normal shape).

"I think - "

The sound that she heard is getting louder. A rustling that turns into a roaring, and then - from a side tunnel - a small wave bursts out. A wave that has a Sahagin in it, though the Sahagin does not slow down to attack the party; it is clearly riding the top of the wave and doesn't really care who it runs over.

Unfortunately it ran over Emeralda, who does not float. She stands in the flow of the water, her hair and skirt pulled by the current, with a confused expression on her face. If that was all it was, it would be more embarassing than dangerous.

But the roaring is getting louder. There's a second, larger wave on the way. Emeralda realizes this and gestures wildly before vanishing from sight, crouching down in the water and digging in. She can do that and catch up in a minute, but everyone else...

Well, with the possible exception of Azoth, it would probably not be a good idea to get caught in that wave.

DG: Emeralda Kasim has used her Tool H&S Badge toward her party's challenge, A Fiendish Flood.
<Pose Tracker> Azoth has posed.

They solve the puzzle! Azoth taps in place like a puppy before moving on.

"Swim?" Azoth looks back at Emeralda with a single blink, and then a nervous smile. "I wouldn't describe myself as buoyant, but I'll manage if we must enter the water." To Elly, a gentler smile: "Thank you, though." Pause. "In terms of hygiene, I hope it isn't necessary."

Azoth tilts his head toward Citan. "Filgaia," he says, which is the broadest answer he could give, but also, technically, all he said about it so far. Now Emeralda's chimes in. Unable to specify the truth, and not yet readied with a confident lie, Azoth falls back on a different form of obfuscation: the truth. The best sort of lie. His smile stops reaching his eyes, tainted in wistful sadness. "...The specifics... well, there's nothing left for me to go back to."

Just assume a perfectly mundane, but tragic Drifter backstory of your choice, please.

Belatedly, the devil remembers it is spoken of, and the waters come to cleanse Azoth of his dishonest sins. Or they were in a sewer and this was inevitable.

"Emeralda...!" he calls in concern as the water runs over her. But she's as fine as Azoth might've been, were he in her place. Not that he wants to demonstrate it. The roar approaches, and Azoth books it in the opposite direction.

DG: Azoth has contributed a Agility Basic Action toward his party's challenge, A Fiendish Flood.
<Pose Tracker> Fei Fong Wong has posed.

"Ah! Saving money! Good thinking!" Fei beams at Elly.

Then Fei looks to Azoth, "I mean, we know you're from Filgaia. I think we're hoping for a little more than 'the planet', man." He cracks a small grin. "But hey, if you're secretly a space alien, it's all good."

DID HE FIGURE IT OUT? No, he just has some Claude experience. ANd it's not as if Solaris isn't 'part of Filgaia' barring the most ridiculous interpretations of 'part of Filgaia'. Not that Fei doesn't imagine that living in Solaris is probably real different from anywhere on the surface.

...barring maybe its rival, Shevat. Just like Kislev and Aveh, he thinks. A cold war rather than a hot one.

"Ah geeze," Fei says. "That's Fiends isn't it..? Emerealda, get to high---"

He blinks at the dotted outline of where Emeralda was moments before. "Emeralda?"

He doofily pokes his head down to try and see if she's down there--most likely DELAYING his own escape.

DG: Fei Fong Wong has contributed a Agility Basic Action toward his party's challenge, A Fiendish Flood.
<Pose Tracker> Citan Uzuki has posed.

'Filgaia', says Azoth, and in doing so, earns an amused if crooked smile as Citan shakes his head. "A simple answer, I see! ...Hmm, if that is the case, then I would say that you are not alone in that regard," he says. And he turns, in part, towards Emeralda, though not without a glance Azoth's way. "...Now, let us hope that we will not need to 'swim' down here!"

It isn't long before there's an unusual sound. Citan pauses, listening, as if to catch it when it comes again. But it's not so much that it comes 'again' than that it becomes louder. Creasing his brow, the doctor wonders aloud, "What is that--"

    Speak of the devil, indeed.

He realizes what it is. His eyes widen. "No! We must turn back at once--!"

But even that warning comes too late. Turning -- too late to save Emeralda, who is sucked under -- Citan too breaks into a run, interspersing it with leaps over the fallen debris that had strewn their path. But just how long can they outrun a flood?

DG: Citan Uzuki has used his Tool Step Shoes toward his party's challenge, A Fiendish Flood.
<Pose Tracker> Elhaym van Houten has posed.

The light griddling of Azoth provokes Elly's curiosity too, even if she is too nice to bring it up herself. All she remembers is that - whatever Azoth's origin - that thing... that Mega Man... spoke ill of him.

And...

She couldn't just...

Either way, Elly descends and moves along, adding over her shoulder, "Be sure to jot down the solution to that puzzle as clearly as you can. I think that might be a real help if they do need to move through here. Especially if there were enemy forces right HERE..."

Instead there is another force. The washing water and behind it --

SAHAGUIN...

Elly's eyes narrow. She is starting to hate these guys, and it helps that they are Fiends, and are thus, well, capering manifestations of hostile pyreflies. RIGHT? Hopefully there isn't going to be some new discovery. A hand goes into her pocket as she throws herself forwards to clasp Fei's own hand and with the other, throw out--!!

That's a fishing line.

what the heck is Elly doing with her life

ANSWER: Getting a deep-sea fishing hook caught behind what looks like a heavy rock! Is it a heavy ENOUGH rock? Let's find out.

DG: The party led by Elhaym van Houten has passed this challenge! The party gained 20 exploration! If anyone needs to
use party management commands, do so now. Otherwise, the next round's GM may begin the next round with +dungeon/draw.
<Pose Tracker> Emeralda Kasim has posed.

"Oh..." Now Emeralda feels faintly guilty for asking. She is not good enough at guile to determine lies and half-truths of that sort; it feels honest enough to her. "Well, at least you can adventure now?" Emeralda doesn't know where she's from, really, either. She remembers Kim; she doesn't remember where Kim *was*.

And she still has a family. So all is well. Right?

But that was before the flood. Don't worry, Emeralda is fine; she is crouching down in a little crevice as the water washes over her, threatening to pull her away but never quite managing it. It isn't something she could do if she had to breathe all the time, but she seems to be able to handle going without for a few minutes at least.

Booking it is probably the best idea if you do have to breathe. Azoth starts to pull ahead, and Citan almost does, though having to avoid debris slows him down a little - enough for the water to batter at him and threaten to catch him with a strong current.

Elly manages to anchor herself on a rock. It's a good rock. She holds her ground while Fei splashes around a little - Emeralda is still there and she sees him, but she stays put until the wave has mostly passed by.

Part of the tunnel remains flooded up to most people's waist, though the sides are still clear(er) and dry(er). Emeralda wades out through the flooded section; it comes up higher on her, and her hair is even messier than normal. "I'm okay!" she says, before spitting out some water. When it flowed over her - through her - so fast, some of it got caught. She feels like she'd slosh if she turned around fast.

Which means she spends a moment spelling it. Water cascades down Emeralda's body as her skin apparently discharges about a liter of water. She wipes the remnants it out of her eyes afterwards. "It's gross!!"

DG: Azoth has drawn a new Challenge.

The Guard seems to be well aware of recent incursions in the sewers. You've
seen traces of patrols nearby--footprints, disturbed dust, dried blood--but
this time, you've run into something a bit more substantial.

The air grows deathly cold, or intolerably hot, as sorcery rains down from
above. A moment later, a shout rings out:

 "Subdue them at once!"

The rest of the Althenan patrol emerges from hiding, bringing blades,
staves, and sorcery to bear. There aren't very many of them, but they have
your party in a tough spot, /and/ they have the advantage of surprise. On
the upside, they'll retreat if the fight turns against them.
=Dungeon Conditions: Exhaust, Fright==========================================
<Pose Tracker> Azoth has posed.

Azoth gives them goofier grins of his own with their commentary. All right, it wasn't the best answer. There is a stab of guilt with Emeralda's reaction, however. Azoth smiles faintly. "Adventuring has been fun." A fun LIE.

But water! Rushing, flooding water. Azoth manages to avoid revealing how well he sinks and does not drown, not realizing half the party already figured him out. He offers to hand to anyone who might need help pulling through the depth on the way out, which might just be offering another clue -- he's a surprisingly sturdy fixture for his lithe size.

The moisture clinging to them as they press on turns to frost, crunching in their clothes and nipping with relentless chill. And that's the moment before ice coalesces from the new, hazy vapor in the air, forming into a relentless barrage of sharp spikes.

"Subdue them at once!" they shout, to which Azoth calls back: "Please do not!"

He pulls a smooth rock of amber from his pocket and thrusts if forward, projecting his energy barrier through the form. This provides his current allies possible shelter from the ice shards, some of which shatter over the surface and fall as snow to the ground.

It also projects the image of a giant, hideous looking arachnid over the shield, which he hopes is at least a little unnerving for their assailants. Azoth also uses his voice box to mimic what he thinks a horrible spider monster sounds like. Grr rawr hisssssss.

DG: Azoth has used his Tool Bug in Amber toward his party's challenge, Ambush!.
<Pose Tracker> Citan Uzuki has posed.

The answer is 'yes, but not without a close call, at least on the doctor's part. He nearly matches Azoth's pace, but is but a moment too slow; the water is soon at his back. He makes a desperate leap as it catches up to him, reaching out for a nearby rung of some ladder leading up to the city above. His fingers close around it just as the wave over takes him, and it takes all his strength to not get swept away with it. But eventually, the onrush of water dies down, and Citan releases his grip to drop to the pathway below.

He grimaces as he faces the others, coupling the expression with a rueful smile. "I must say," he says, removing his glasses (somehow not lost in the flood), "that this was precisely the situation that I was hoping to avoid...! Well, 'what's done is done', as they say. Fei, Elly, would either of you happen to have a dry cloth?"

Into this moment, the Guard intrude.

"Ah," remarks the doctor, glasses still in hand, "This is... very unfortunate."

Perhaps the others will have to settle this fight without his assistance...?!

DG: Citan Uzuki has contributed a Combat Basic Action toward his party's challenge, Ambush!.
<Pose Tracker> Emeralda Kasim has posed.

Does it count as a lie if you really are having fun doing it?

Emeralda is still trying to clear out all the water she picked up - being particulate in a fast-moving current means she catches more than she'd like. Not all of it is water either, which she is trying not to think about too much (though a lot of what is not water is dirt and rock dust, which is unpleasant but not actually harmful).

She is also not good at hiding what *she* is when her hair twists itself out, squeezing water out before returning to an almost-but-not-quite normal state of fluffiness. Well, she tried.

Emeralda is facing exactly the wrong way to see the Guards appear, but she feels the sorcery and, more urgently, the cold. Some of the water droplets on her freeze, and crack off with faint noises when Emeralda starts to run back toward the group.

Azoth has a rock. Emeralda also has a rock, but hers is tinted blue, has a silver inlay like something between jewelry and circuitry, and is clearly broken off a larger crystal - the same material as Crescens' Ether Amp, in fact. Which may explain why when she brandishes it, the temperature goes back up, little streamers of flame appearing out of nowhere to form a little ball right in front of her face.

Emeralda exhales, and the ball bursts into a cone of flame. It's too far away to really hurt the Guards - it gutters out after about ten feet - but it sure makes the bug illusion scarier! It's accidental, though, because Emeralda lets out a little yelp a moment later. "Aah! Bug! Giant spider bug!"

DG: Emeralda Kasim has used her Tool Large Etherstone toward her party's challenge, Ambush!.
<Pose Tracker> Fei Fong Wong has posed.

Fei manages to avoid drowning too. .... Though he mostly manages to avoid drowning because Elly grabs his hand and uses her Hunter x Hunter powerset of FISHING ROD (Fei's hunter x hunter powerset is Rock Paper Scissors) to pull them to safety! Nice!

Fei sees Emeralda as family too. Sure, he isn't sure he's Kim. Maybe he WAS Kim, but now he's Fei. Unless somehow Kim did whatever Sharon did and they're all the same person forever and *hyperventilating*. Fei decides to not think about that too much. He's still feeling strangely peaceful after that battle which is strange because battles rarely ever make him feel peaceful. They usually stress him the heck out!

"Emeralda's still down there...!" Fei says.

Then Emeralda just walks out and says she's okay. "Ahhahh---that's a relief...!" Did he forget that Emeralda is, well, SOMETHING SPECIAL in that regard or--

A vague memory of fighting Solaris in some underwater facility--

--no that's not--

--Fei wrings out his sleeves to get some of the water out and adds, "Sure is. Sometimes adventuring's real gross."

AND THEN GUARDS.

"Oh...hey...Haha... guess we alerted' em."

He glances back to Azoth. No specific answer--well, sometimes it be like that, he reflects.

"Emeralda...! I'm gonna teach them how to play Rock Paper Scissors...!"

He darts forward and throws out his fist! "Rock!"

The Guard blinks in brief confusion before Fei pops him in the face. Then he turns to another and says, "Scissors!"

He promptly scissor kicks the guy in the chin.

"And paper...!"

A karate chop in the neck!

"Rock Paper Scissors. It's okay to change the order up obviously. Ha Ha Ha!"

DG: Fei Fong Wong has used his Tool RPS Badge toward his party's challenge, Ambush!.
<Pose Tracker> Elhaym van Houten has posed.

"I'm glad you're having a good time," Elly says to Azoth. "This is a little less... mm..."

'Subdue them at once!'

Elly brings up the iron staff which she has been carrying all this time! (One might fairly ask, gee, where did Elly have what is essentially a piece of iron pipework nearly as long as she is, and how come it didn't come up before? As always, the answer is: Very well, thank you.)

Elly tenses and --

--

-- THE EMISSARY FROM HELL! AZOTH! --

Elly feels her skin crawl at the visceral gut reaction fo seeing an enormous spider even if it seems to be kind of symbolic and also not actually pointed towards them. Elly breathes out, even as Emeralda's own rocks come into play, and while the topic of the enormous but philosophical arachnid is broached, she advances to bust heads.

DG: Elhaym van Houten has used her Tool Iron Born Staff toward her party's challenge, Ambush!.

<Pose Tracker> Azoth has posed.

Azoth winces with Elly and Emeralda not having the most favorable bug related reactions. "She's a friend!" he says, which is a weird response because 'she' is not alive. ...Or is she, ancient and full of bug wisdom, sleeping at peace.

No, none of that.

But now she breathes FIRE and some of the Althenians are scrambling away from what might be a summoned monster, if not getting caught in the flames outright. Anyone else who's brave enough to be in range is getting a face full of rock, paper, scissors, all picking the incorrect counter, evidently, in the chaos. And then there's Iron Staff, which does not have a counter in this game.

Citan doesn't have to do anything but clean his glasses to the sounds of shouting and blunt force trauma.

The upper hand not being as strong as they hoped, their attackers pull back in retreat, leaving the group relatively unscathed. Azoth drops the shield, rubbing the back of his neck with an awkward smile as he looks to Elly and Emeralda.

"Sorry! ... Sorry."

=Dungeon Conditions: Hesitate=================================================
<Pose Tracker> Fei Fong Wong has posed.

Fei is smiling like a goofy kid himself after the fighting dies down for a moment. He brushes his hands off against one another and says, "Well that wasn't too bad. I guess we didn't draw their big guns over." He takes a few steps onward only to immeediately tart backingg up as a SECOND patrol of Althenian Guardsmen come out of the woodworks. Several, including spellcasters, warriors, and even one dude with a forehead protector that has a @ on it.

"You're not going to get past us, Believe it!!" He says as he raises a kunai in his hand...!

Fei rubs at his neck and looks back to Elly and holds onto her hand once more.

"I think... in this case... we better beat it..!" But the Guard isn't going to give our heroes much opportunity to do so! It'll take some deft movements to get out of this pickle. "You don't have a solution for this sorta thing do ya Azoth?"

DG: Fei Fong Wong has contributed a Agility Basic Action toward his party's challenge, An Unorthodox Route.
<Pose Tracker> Azoth has posed.

The age old question: is a robot faster than a ninja?

Azoth's eyes widen, bright and aglow, as it turns out the guard is not quite done with them. He makes a break for it with the others, looking over the area with the light of his eyes reflecting off the slick, moist stone.

Then he points upward toward a shred of hope for escape. "There!"

He sounds certain, but he hesitates, letting the others go first. Azoth is a dense creature, and he's worried he'll break that uneasy looking wood before anyone else has a chance to use it.

What about Emeralda? She's a little smaller. There isn't time for a more complete analysis than that!

DG: Azoth has contributed a Agility Basic Action toward his party's challenge, An Unorthodox Route.
<Pose Tracker> Emeralda Kasim has posed.

"I just wasn't expecting bugs," Emeralda says, sounding defensive. She is not scared of them! Not even a little. Not even giant prehistoric ones that appear out of nowhere.

Well... maybe a little. But she'll never say so.

Emeralda shoves her Etherstone away again, because it seems less useful right now that they're not actually fighting. And she agrees with Fei. "I don't want to fight all of them!" She looks around. It doesn't occur to her to look up until Azoth points her in that direction. (She would have found it.. eventually.)

"Oh!" Emeralda looks up at the gap... and hesitates. Though she doesn't realize it, it's exactly the same reason as Azoth. She's not big - she's the smallest person in this group, certainly - but she's dense. Dense enough that she didn't float; dense enough that she's kind of a pain for Fei or Elly to boost or pick up.

But she's going to have to do it sooner or later, and so she does. Emeralda clambers up the wall; it's slick but her fingers always seem to find purchase, if she can find a ledge or gap to wedge them in. She gets to the top, and she can't quiiiite reach the walkway with her arms...

...but her hair can, reaching up in a big green 'hand' and gripping, 'fingers' spread out wide to make sure she doesn't break the wood or pull it out of the sockets. She's not as heavy as some Drifters (it's just very compressed) so while the wood creaks for a moment, she can pull herself up and on with only some noise. Hopefully without falling.

"Azoth! Come ooon!" Emeralda calls down as she tries to pull herself up. Good luck following them now, GUARDS

DG: Emeralda Kasim has used her Tool H&S Badge toward her party's challenge, An Unorthodox Route.
<Pose Tracker> Elhaym van Houten has posed.

Elly looks at the approaching group.

Yes, Elly thinks later.

It was undeniable.

It was 2x2 'Guards'... But there was only one 'Ninja'.

Her hand is taken by Fei and they move forwards, and somehow it feels... familiar. Not quite right, but familiar. Good, almost. She dips her other hand into her fishing tackle pouch and, once they have a little ground, says, "Hold on," and then she -

What did she do? She sort of just goes from one side and mimes like she's... extending... high-tension durable fishing line across the dimly lit...

That's gonna sting.

And then when they reach the wall, Elly takes a deep breath and puts her hand to the stone. She has to squinch at it, but it begins to deform in a subtle way. It's not something you would necessarily spot if you weren't looking for it, but nodules come out every few feet, in staggered rows, speckled like spots on an apple, following a fibonnaci sequence of sorts. Grasping points... almost exactly two-thirds of an Emeralda-length apart.

They look like little hearts.

and once they reach the top they lose a certain degree of integrity.

... Did something happen with ninjas to Elly?

DG: Elhaym van Houten has used her Tool Fishing Gear toward her party's challenge, An Unorthodox Route.
<Pose Tracker> Citan Uzuki has posed.

He's not exactly blind without them -- his glasses that is -- but the scene that follows, as Citan cleans his glasses as carefully as he can under the circumstances, is a rather more indistinct one that it would be otherwise.

It does not stop him from noticing Azoth's little trick, however... particularly not when he slips his now reasonably-cleaned glasses back on.

Suffice to say the sounds of the fight led him to already believe the conclusion of that encounter was foregone, if potentially a bit on the noisy side.

Indeed, here's the cavalry, so to speak. "...I believe that your line of thinking is correct, Fei!" With that, the doctor points straight up, at that gap that rests just overhead them all. "There!" he calls out, in much the same moment as Azoth.

It would have been a difficult jump to make, even using the nearby wall. But it's a jump Citan doesn't have to make, since mere moments after Elly crafts a formidable obstacle for the Guard (here he gives her a glance, complete with one arched eyebrow), she also provides a way up.

It's good form. Jugend standard. ...Well, perhaps not the hearts.

Taking advantage of the points leading upwards, he ascends at speed. ...Wet stone or no, these shoes have good grip.

"This should hold.," he calls down. "Emeralda! Azoth! Hurry!"

DG: Citan Uzuki has used his Tool Step Shoes toward his party's challenge, An Unorthodox Route.

Gold gleams atop a pile of debris strewn beneath a sewer grate. From a
distance, it could simply be a stray Gil that fell through, but closer
examination reveals the truth: it's a pendant bearing the icon of Yevon.
It's not the only relic here. Someone threw looted Yevonite artifacts into
the sewer to rot. Some of them will need serious restoration work, but the
Temple will reward you handsomely for their return. They'll be extremely
unhappy about what happened, but it's not like interfaith relations can get
 much worse, can they?
=Dungeon Conditions: Treasure=================================================
<Pose Tracker> Fei Fong Wong has posed.

The completely helpful and innocent robot who isn't working for Solaris at all points to a possible avenue of escape! One that might be PRETTY TOUGH for little lady nanocolonies and uh Gears (Mk: Tiny) to get up.

Fei is willing to punch a dinosaur in the nose for love. He will lift an Emeralda if he has to. Sometimes Fei does it just to show affection to a child. but that doesn't mean it's going to be an easy escape.

Emeralda is able to climb up and Fei grins, "wow! Incredible, Emmy!" It's short for Emeralda because the Guard is shooting fire at his butt.

"Wow I didn't know you could do that..." Fei admits, upon seeing Elly craft handholds. It'll certainly make it easier for him to get up (though he, and Azoth, do take some fire in the escape).

"I'm going to be the Blue Dragon Kung Fu Master one day! Believe it...!" The ninja shouts but misses his kunai throw. "Dangit...!" He pulls up his bright orange jumpsuit.

Citan also sees the escape route and readily takes the same path Elly crafts as Fei does. All together they are able to abscond without too much danger...

...and on the waay out, they find--Yevon relics!

Fei brushes muck off a pendant and adds, "It'd be kind of risky trying to sell these..." He admits. "But I've been thinking of working on my iconography." He grins. "Worse case, we can just melt 'em to component parts later...!"

FEI: SOMETIMES RUDE TO RELIGIONS.

FEI: ESPECIAllY IF THOSE RELIGIONS TRIED TO EXECUTE HIS GIRLFRIEND.

<Pose Tracker> Citan Uzuki has posed.

"Yes, under the circumstances, I do not believe it would be, ah, wise to return these," Citan remarks, apparently not terribly troubled by retaining religious relics. Under the circumstances though it may be understandable.

"Still, we have confirmed at least one thing: the Guard is still active in these tunnels. We must take care if we intend to use these to venture into Luca..."

<Pose Tracker> Azoth has posed.

Azoth winces and pats the flames from his clothing. This is not the first time they've caught fire in the past week. Maybe the singe marks will be in this season. He's fortunate he isn't pulling a kunai out of himself.

"I suppose we're not returning the way we came," Azoth says. He picks up a relic himself, dusting it off. Interesting objects, but not anything Azoth's been informed Solaris might want. Didn't Elly mention she was short on money...? Oh, but, finding buyers... He offers his to Fei instead.

"I've only recently gotten the hang of haggling... I don't think I can work with this."
