  • Log: Searching For Friends
  • Cast: Billy Lee Black, Seraph Yvain, Xantia
  • Where: New Kasim City
  • Date: July 30, 2021
  • Summary: Xantia discovers Billy Lee Black, one of the missing friends she was looking for, in the care of Yvain, the Seraph who helped her get through Zanarkand earlier. Teaming up, the three make their way through the ancient Zeboim ruins below the central dome, searching for their other friends.

=============================<* New Kasim City *>=============================

New Kasim City is the ruin of an ancient Zeboim-era city on Spira. It is covered entirely by the city of Zanarkand, established atop its ruins centuries and centuries after it was abandoned. Now, the city sits in a cavern. Many of its skyscrapers are cut off -- and the city is a small, compact place, to boot. The city is surrounded by huge steel walls, forming a "donut" of steel around the whole thing. Catwalks make the city have multiple levels, with stairs leading upward.

Many parts of the city are powered still. Drones wander its streets; lights, including advertisements and other evidence of its inhabitants, can be seen. The buildings are in various states of disrepair, with the top floors having been destroyed. There are no residents here -- no Spirans ever made it down here, after the city was buried. Still, sometimes, fiends can be seen wandering... and the pyreflies, as ever, drift on by.

|Type: Entry |Dungeon Ability: Agility |Challenge Rating: 3 |
---------------------------< Challenge Information: >---------------------------
The ground at the center of Zanarkand Dome is heavily damaged and weakened.
It begins giving away, with even the smallest movement, and the end result
is that the ground collapses right in front of the final temple -- right in
front of the end of the pilgrimage. In a way, it might seem like a cosmic
joke played on summoners and guardians.

It is a frenzied, panicked descent into the darkness. Falling pieces of
rock, chunks of concrete riddled with rebar, and the occasional pitted and
rusted steel beam fall with you. You fall and fall, and need to find some
way to arrest your descent -- or at least land without causing severe injury
 to yourself.

When you land, it is dark at first. You are on a concrete surface -- and
then lights nearby flicker on, as if detecting your presence. The lights
catch reflective strips painted on the road -- and then signs appear.

<Pose Tracker> Billy Lee Black has posed.

Amid the chaos of the Solaris-Odessa-Drifter battle, the ground at the center of the Zanarkand Dome buckles, sending all tumbling into darkness. It is a tremendous fall - an unimaginably huge one, indicative of a cavern of incomprehensible scale lurking beneath the already gigantic corpse of Zanarkand. Concrete and debris and chunks of machines, some half-ruined and some not so much, tumble through the space, offering some fractional protection from the air, if not gravity. But standing on a crashing platform doesn't make you any less crashing yourself.

This is a problem, for Billy Lee Black, because Billy Lee Black got dunked by some kind of kung fu cyborg space jerk and is currently unconscious.

DG: Billy Lee Black has contributed a Agility Basic Action toward his party's challenge, Highway to the Danger Zone.
<Pose Tracker> Seraph Yvain has posed.

Falls are a problem, but not the worst problem for Seraphim. Yvain was in the midst of a pitched battle trying to keep a few mortals alive when the floor went out, and bam, there it goes. He sails through the air, weaving around bits of rebar and concrete until he spots--

Ah, there.

"I don't think so," Yvain says, and disappears in a burst of flames--only to reappear near Billy, reaching down to pick up the priest carefully, and jump off the piece of crashing debris towards another, on the way down, down, down...

While he is not concerned with dying in a fall, it may take him a lot of energy to get Billy back to health enough to walk around.

DG: Seraph Yvain has contributed a Agility Basic Action toward his party's challenge, Highway to the Danger Zone.
<Pose Tracker> Xantia has posed.

Xantia is already past the falling phase of the equation, and has been for a while. Following the battle with Odessa and Solaris within the dome above, the ground had split open beneath her just as she was holding back Fei, sending the two down together. Through Ether manipulation, the exact nature of which she'd be unable to fully explain, she managed to break their fall, for the most part, though it was quite the exhausting affair.

After resting and talking a bit, they decided to split up to find the others they knew to have fallen down here. Not an easy task, especially with Xantia being unwilling to use any light or call out for fear of alerting the Bad Guys you also know to be down here.

Not that Xantia wouldn't be willing to beat up some Bad Guys, of course. She just feels that it's not a good idea to encounter Solaris in particular. It's led to some worrisome issues of self-control on her part, that's not something she wants to happen when no one else is there to help snap her out of it if need be.

It's not long until she spots a light up ahead. Or, rather, a person-shaped glow, shining through a brittle rock formation - the way she perceives Seraphs helping her to know there's one over there. Seraphs are good company, in her experience, and who knows who else might be over there. This seems like a good direction to take.

She spends exactly two seconds looking for an easy way to the other side of these rocks, before she slips on her magical ice claw to freeze them, and then easily punch through the now brittle surface. Xantia: turning Agility challenges into Brute challenges since as long as anyone can remember.

"Oh, it's you Yvain, hi!" she greets as if she just entered a room normally. "And... Billy?!" She actually found one of the people she was looking for! He's looked better, but still! "Are you okay?"

DG: Xantia has used her Tool Blizzaga Claw toward her party's challenge, Highway to the Danger Zone.

DG: The party led by Billy Lee Black has passed this challenge! The party gained 20 exploration! If anyone needs to use
party management commands, do so now. Otherwise, the next round's GM may begin the next round with +dungeon/draw.
<Pose Tracker> Billy Lee Black has posed.

Billy does not, in fact, land on the ground and shatter into a million pieces, because the good Seraph Yvain is able to catch him and, nimbly, guide him down to the surface!

Considering he looks like he could blow away in a stiff breeze, he is weirdly heavy. This is because he is carrying many guns. Perhaps this causes Yvain to stumble on landing or something.

Other than a little stumble on Yvain's part, the group assembles on the ground. Billy finally comes to, mumbling half-sensibly until he suddenly jerks in his carry and tumbles to the ground, looking around wildly. "Solaris!" he yells, eyes snapping around to take in the surroundings as quickly as possible. But...

"...cavern," he says, and looks up at the opening far above.

A few seconds of anxious breathing lets him get his wits back around him and he shifts out of a combat stance. "I....guess we fell," he says. "Xantia, yes. I'm..."

His jaw sets as he thinks back to moments ago when the Solarian Watcher bested him in the most fundamental ways.

"Fine." He looks to Yvain, next. "I owe you my thanks, stranger."

DG: Seraph Yvain has drawn a new Challenge.

You follow a concrete road until it ends in a large, two-story facility. The
glass doors are open, leading to a large atrium, with rows of chairs and
tables in a cafeteria. A sign on the wall blinks, periodically: FOOD
 DISTRIBUTION CENTER

You see a large number of robots inside. Some whirr to life, looking up at
you with dusted and cracked oculars. A machine inside a nearby kitchen also
spins up, with effort -- and loud, worrying clanking. A mechanical voice
says, in the Zeboim language, "Greetings! We will begin preparing food
 and--FIRE CONTROL INITIATED."

The doors you entered from are sealed shut, as steel blast doors come down.
Flame suddenly begins leaping up from a window into kitchen, and across the
countertops. There is a hiss -- and a spray of dust, but no water -- from
the sprinkler systems. It seems the automated kitchen has a maintenance
emergency -- and the fire control has sealed you inside a room that is soon
 to burn down.

<Pose Tracker> Seraph Yvain has posed.

Indeed, Yvain finds Billy to be heavier than he expected. Even though he can handle the difference, it puts him off-balance, and makes his landing less graceful than he would like. When he jerks around, Yvain can't spare him a bit of a tumble to the ground, though he does recognize--

"Ah, Xantia. I'm glad you're well."

Billy yells of Solaris, and Yvain shakes his head; he is certainly not Solarian, dressed in elaborate Lunar style. "We've fallen from Zanarkand," Yvain explains. "The people I was with during the battle must have fallen elsewhere..."

But Billy acknowledges him, and he nods back to him. "I am the Seraph Yvain. You are welcome; I would not leave a mortal to die in such a way."

He smiles briefly, but only briefly. "Let's get moving; the distance is too great for me to teleport us back up, and I suspect we may have friends down here."

He pauses, though, to look around, thoughtful. "But this... this is all in the Ancient Tongue. 'Amadi Heavy Industries'... 'Lizner Robotics.' 'The New Longossa Cruiser.' Advertisement? ...But this makes me think of the ancients of Filgaia, their 'Zeboim'..."

Hmm. He leads the way down the road, and eventually they reach a large, two-story facility. Yvain translates the sign on the wall, "Food Distribution Center."

Presumably this gets Xantia inside immediately, and Yvain follows if that happens, or else leads in. But probably follows. We all know Xantia.

But the robots inside--some whirr to life, and a machine inside a nearby kitchen spins up--and starts clanking. "'Greetings! We will begin preparing food and--'"

"Oh, that's not good."

The doors seal shut; blast doors come down. A spray of dust, a hiss, and there's a maintenance emergency...

"I have a lantern that reveals weak points--strike where the red glow sparks!"

He pulls the Lantern, and shines it over the doors to find the way.

Sadly, there is no good food in here.

DG: Seraph Yvain has used his Tool Lantern of Revelation toward his party's challenge, Burning Down the House.
<Pose Tracker> Xantia has posed.

Xantia looks a little sheepish when Billy jumps up to full alert regarding Solaris like that. She knows how that is. But relief is the predominant reaction. She hadn't been able to ascertain where Billy flew off to after that meeting of the minds, in a literal sense. At the same time as Billy, she puts together that it must be Yvain she has to thank for the drop not ending up worse than it could have been.

"It's like you show up just when people need you most!" she asserts with a grin. Not much she can be sure of where it comes to Yvain other than that, which is plenty to have her full trust. And she'll vouch for as much to Billy. "Yvain was a big help on the way here, too. Sorry I was late by the way."

As for Solaris... "Well, yes, I know Fei is down here, and Elly must be too... but probably, so is Solaris. They came here for a reason, so like I said to Fei... if what they're after is down here, we'd better find it before they do."

Xantia's eyes pass over the various glowy signs as Yvain reads them. She's not surprised to find this is Zeboim, given what she was told... and what she knows of the language. She couldn't exactly read much aside from a few words that were translated in her presence before, but she can recognize it when she sees it.

Naturally, she's never going to forget one particular word on the most recent sign Yvain gets to. "Food?! Hey, the lights are still on and everything, you think the food in here is still good? Hang on, I'll go check!" Yes, of course she's off and not stopped by any objections. That was predictable.

She's momentarily confused by the robot servers, delighted at the promise of food, then dismayed by everything suddenly going wrong, in the span of a few seconds.

"It's a trap!" she misinterprets the situation, but it at least gets her to spring into action right away. Replacing the ice claw with the fist weapon designed for demolition, she makes to follow Yvain's instructions immediately.

DG: Xantia has used her Tool Mini-Megaton toward her party's challenge, Burning Down the House.
<Pose Tracker> Billy Lee Black has posed.

'A mortal.' Billy can sense the man is a Seraph; he's not been to the land they purport to come from, but enough have shown up as part of the invasion efforts that he's familiar with the spirits, at least. He nods his thanks. "Yes," He agrees, to both really. They have to keep moving. Odessa had something they wanted down here; Solaris wanted it too. Neither can have it. Billy draws his guns swiftly and turns on his heels. "Those names..." he says. "Yes. Advertisements. Companies. Why..."

He knows little of the Ancient Tongue, but that it should show up in this way does not surprise him much. His hand rests, briefly, over one of his pockets, contemplating something with grim focus.

Then Xantia becomes ensnared by food. "I suppose if it's canned, it might not be dust yet," he mutters. Also he shouldn't let her run off unassisted.

THIS PROVES TO BE A MISTAKE

"This is not how you control fires!" Billy objects, but that's all he has time for before it's time to go. Yvain reveals weaknesses in the door, and Xantia works with her demolition fist, but Billy produces a blasting charge from his coat, and yells, "Get back!" before pitching it at a glowing point.

Then, when it gets there, he detonates it with a gunshot, because we're using THOSE physics.

DG: Billy Lee Black has used his Tool Blasting Charge toward his party's challenge, Burning Down the House.

Periodically, the less-crushed parts of New Kasim City have large towers.
These have huge, rotating spokes -- which can raise and lower, which act as
elevators that connected pedestrials and vehicles to a network of elevated
walkways and roads through the city. You find one, and flashing green lights
indicate that it is still working. This will allow you to reach a level at a
 different height.

When you enter, it is a large room -- with double-layered doors, one on the
interior of the room and another attached to the connecting walkway. The
doors close. The room begins to spin...

 ...and spin...

 ...and spin even more...

...and you realize the room is spinning, even as it rises to meet where you
want to exit. But it is not stopping, and you need to find some way to make
 it stop.
=Dungeon Conditions: Reckless, Overwhelm======================================
<Pose Tracker> Seraph Yvain has posed.

A mortal! Yvain is not a particularly secretive person about what he is, and his old-style, more formal diction only add to his strange nature. But Xantia seems to have an idea of who he is already, one that makes him smile at her, if only for a few moments. "That I've given you that impression is most welcome," Yvain answers.

"Fei, and Elly... and Solaris. Yes, I see. I will help you; perhaps I will also find my friends if I stick with you."

But there's a certain tiring nature to being down here amidst this glut of Pyreflies and terrible energy, as if Yvain is slightly smothered by being so far underground; as they travel, he seems to get tired more and more quickly. But that doesn't come up immediately. First:

"People lived here," he notes, and then--well. The fire happens.

While Yvain finds himself hurt by the anti-fire measures for some mysterious reason, Billy and Xantia just outright smash the hell out of that blast door, and make it out very quickly. Yvain... feels his age a little. For once.

"I have some supplies," he offers. "When we reach a safe enough place, if you're hungry, I can help."

"...In better circumstances," he says, "I would inquire as to your interesting ARM use. Perhaps when we're safe."

He does look tired.

<Pose Tracker> Xantia has posed.

People lived here. Xantia can't help but be reminded of Babel Tower. It too showed signs of people having once lived there, also involving lots of strange machines. It didn't seem too strange on Filgaia, given Ancient History. But what's a place like this doing here?

It doesn't matter quite so much that Xantia will stop giving priority to escaping what she's determined to be a trap set to lure people in with the promise of food. Fiendish! Still, with their minds set to the task, escaping is no big deal, in her estimation. As long as smashing things works as a solution, she'll be just fine.

In the short breather afterwards, she reacts to Yvain's remark, "You still have more supplies? You need to tell me your secret, my supplies never last that long."

(The secret probably involves 'don't eat everything at once', Xantia.)

But, indeed, that's best left for better circumstances. At the moment, there's a new obstacle to overcome. A large section of crumbled road, leaving a gaping chasm that would be perilous if not impossible to vault across. Even Xantia thinks better of trying, instead wandering over to a nearby structure. She'd noted several of them before in passing, all without active lights, or alarmingly red-colored lights. These green ones seem nice and friendly. Sure enough, the door opens at her approach.

"Oh, hey! I think we can use this! I think it goes up!"

Up it goes, alright. Not just directly though. The room turns during its ascent, as of it were some kind of giant screw. Xantia doesn't seem particularly alarmed by it. In fact, she takes the opportunity to speak calmly to her companions.

"So... what do you think this place is? It doesn't look like much is left of it, but I guess some of this stuff could be valuable. I wonder what's valuable enough to get so much attention from Odessa and Solaris..."

After a time though, there's been so much spinning that Xantia has trouble keeping her footing. "Does... does this stop? Can we get off now? Hey! That's enough spinning, I think!" Xantia's solutions mostly involve punching things, but it seems unwise to punch the thing you're in. So she resorts to pressing whatever buttons she can manage to get to without falling over. Some aren't even buttons, just lights, she can't tell the difference at this point.

DG: Xantia has contributed a Wits Basic Action toward her party's challenge, You Spin Me Right Round.
<Pose Tracker> Billy Lee Black has posed.

Indeed, people lived here. It's an inescapable truth. This place....this place they had no hint of existing....was surely a home to thousands of people, once.

Rushing out of the flaming building, Billy puts his back to a wall - impossibly sturdy even still - and breathes deeply. The air here is old and stale. That hole above isn't big enough to cycle a cavern this big so fast. He regards Yvain, briefly, and nods. "When it's safe, perhaps," he agrees, and flips his guns into their holsters.

Walking on, soon they find the rising towers, dead or blinking lights showing signs that the technology is damaged. "Elevators," Billy mutters. "How does any of this still have power? The city above was so ancient its ruins founded a civilization. This must be even older." He chews on his lip, thinking. Demons...? No, even that was not this long ago. What in the world is going on here?

Still, an elevator seems like a decent plan. He steps on, settles in against the back, and....

....spinning.

Billy has pulled out a book - it has the dimensions of something portable, but too thick for a notebook. A logbook of sorts, maybe. He thumbs through it as the rotations begin. "If this is truly Zeboim-era, it's difficult to even imagine what wonders are down here. Again...this place is powered, still, even after all this time. If they were using something that can survive this long on that...anything could be down here. Something unimaginable. Something--"

Oh hey it's stiiiill spinning. Billy's eyes flip down to his notebook, roughly turning pages. He reads a few passages carefully, lips moving swiftly.

His lip curls in anger at something before he stuffs it back away, then whips around, pulls his gun, and fires twice at a spot on the ceiling that starts sparking soon after.

DG: Billy Lee Black has used his Tool Decoded Gospel toward his party's challenge, You Spin Me Right Round.
<Pose Tracker> Seraph Yvain has posed.

Something to look forward to perhaps established, Yvain does answer Xantia! "Ah, but then it wouldn't be a secret, would it?"

But up it goes, and up they go. Elevators... Billy has a good question, frankly. Yvain shakes his head. "I don't know," he says. "There are sources of power that do not run dry. But I have never seen something quite like this." Whatever is valuable enough in there...

"It's a city where people lived; more than that is hard to say... but I imagine," Yvain admits, "That whatever else is down here, there are weapons. See the pyreflies--there are Fiends down here, even now."

Unimaginable. Perhaps. But--it... sure isn't stopping.

Yvain will pull the cider jug once they've stopped to help settle stomachs and have people deal, but for now--

He wastes some of it pouring the liquid on the mechanical things. Electronics tend to stop when you put liquid on them.

DG: Seraph Yvain has used his Tool Cider Jug toward his party's challenge, You Spin Me Right Round.

<Pose Tracker> Xantia has posed.

Dangit, secret secrets are the worst secrets!

But at the moment, Xantia is far from thinking of secrets to get food and more of secrets to not lose it. Who knew spinning could be that nauseating? Probably most people, but not Xantia. Rather than go with the flow on this one, she's trying to actively power through it, which doesn't go well. She's just blindly hitting what she thinks might be controls as she follows the outer wall, but none of that does anything.

Figures, the one time she didn't think to break something is the time where it works well, gunfire and liquids alike helping to destroy the electronics and causing the spinning - and the entire elevator - to stop abruptly. With a friendly 'ping', the doors start to open, only to get stuck halfway as all the lights in the device grow dim. At least it has the decency to stay where it is, and not plummet back down.

Xantia can definitely use some of that cider after that ordeal. "Guh... okay... then let's find that energy source, or weapon, or whatever it is they want. ...go on ahead, I'll be out in a bit."

DG: Billy Lee Black has drawn a new Challenge.
==============================<* New Kasim City *>==============================
===================<* CHALLENGE - All Along the Watchtower *>===================
|Type: Exploration |Dungeon Ability: Brute |Challenge Rating: 3 |
---------------------------< Challenge Information: >---------------------------
Your brief exploration of New Kasim City shows that it is compact. It is no
metropolis, but a carefully built small city, meant to use a small amount of
space. You are near what you think must be the edge of it, for there is a
large metal wall that rises up to the bedrock of Zanarkand above. Stenciled
on the wall, in white text, reads: RAVINE REVOLUTIONARY FORCES -- KEEP OUT

There is a stairwell that winds up, to an elevated level on the wall. This
elevated level will let you keep walking. Nearby, built into it, is a guard
tower; once upon a time, this would have been staffed by the very soldiers
that would keep people out. Now, though, it has half-collapsed onto the
stairwell. You will need to break your way through concrete, steel beams,
and more, to get to the catwalk that leads onward.
=Dungeon Conditions: Collapse=================================================
<Pose Tracker> Billy Lee Black has posed.

Billy steps off the elevator to where he's sure the ground is at least as stable as he can get around here, and then falls to his knees, breathing deeply to combat the nausea. He sets his hand to his stomach uneasily, but soon enough he's got it under control. "I do not think I like those," he says, somewhat uselessly.

A short while of recuperation and presumably one corridor full of Fiends later, they come to a giant wall, piercing stone toward the sky. Billy looks up it. "Seraph," Billy says, using the word like a title, "Can you read that?" he asks, indicating the stencil. He's familiar with the type; very utilitarian. Used for something you have to mark often. Militaristic, even. "This feels like...a military checkpoint, maybe?" he murmurs, eyes tracking first to the stairs, then to the tower. "We can likely get up from the inside of that tower," he notes.

Then he pulls up another blast charge. "Let's find a weak spot."

DG: Billy Lee Black has used his Tool Blasting Charge toward his party's challenge, All Along the Watchtower.
<Pose Tracker> Seraph Yvain has posed.

Goes to show: destruction is the answer!

In point of fact though, once they do find this corridor full of Fiends and come to a giant wall... Yvain can, in fact, read it. "'Ravine' Revolutionary Forces -- Keep Out." He translates for the others fairly easily, though it's clearly unfamiliar; he is not familiar with this 'Ravine', though he recognizes a guard tower when he sees it.

"Did it belong to these... revolutionary forces?" he wonders. He nods to Billy. "I concur. Here--"

He brings out the Lantern again, and its red light illuminates the best places to strike.

"...Are you feeling any better, Xantia?" he wonders here.

DG: Seraph Yvain has used his Tool Lantern of Revelation toward his party's challenge, All Along the Watchtower.
<Pose Tracker> Xantia has posed.

As she said, Xantia takes a moment to emerge from the elevator, but by the time she does, the color has returned to her features. "Yeah... but I don't think it's a good moment for that supply break right now," she responds to Yvain. If even she is suggesting to postpone food, it's obvious that's not all is well just yet. Stable enough to keep her footing, at least.

She examines the text Yvain translated briefly, before shrugging. "Well, I assume there aren't any of them left. They won't mind if we break their... things that are already broken anyway."

Not needing to have it suggested to twice, she's quite ready to take the direct approach here, with gratuitous application of physical force. A fist weapon isn't a common demolition tool, but at least in her hands, it's effective for anything that doesn't require any sort of subtlety. Certainly not something she minds doing, if her next remark is any indication.

"Now this is really making me feel better." She starts to hum a happy tune as they chip away at the obstacle.

DG: Xantia has used her Tool Mini-Megaton toward her party's challenge, All Along the Watchtower.

"Ravine," Billy mutters, contemplating. He shrugs after a moment. "Must've been contemporaneous. Sister Zuse would have a field day here, I'm sure..."

Still, with Yvain's help, Billy and Xantia make quick work of blasting a hole into the guard tower, leaving an opening they can get into. As predicted, it does, after accounting for the whole thing not really being intended to be navigated at roughly 70 degrees, let out onto the catwalk above.

You come to the northernmost side of the city. Here, there is a large plaza,
built in front of a large cylindrical tower. The tower has a pair of hangar
doors on it, with the words ACCESS ELEVATOR stenciled upon them. This may
allow access to upper areas -- or even Zanarkand itself. However, your first
task will be to get the elevator open and functioning... and the doors are

Shortly after you start work on it, though, you are given a distraction.
There is a large holographic projector. It first shows an image of a woman
sitting at a desk, in a suit. She is already speaking in Zeboim. "--e have

There are more towers, stretching high; there is the sun in the sky. There
are also pyreflies, both recorded and real, passing through. On a stage, a
balding man in a suit stands. His most notable feature is the spiraling
 green of his irises.

"People of New Kasim City!" he declares. "I know these last ten years have

chose to not follow Althena! We accept no gods but our own... and we will
not cast aside the technologies of our ancestors!"

He throws his arms out. "We will not turn to Althena. We reject the gifts of
magic she has given us. Our scientists are at a loss to explain the power of
the Witchlights that cause the dead to rise -- and the rising tide of FIENDs
into our lands. It has become clear, that if we are to survive, we must
spread across these lands. New Kasim City can only be the start... and
cannot be the end! We must have more settlements."

He clenches a fist. "We will use our machines to master this new land! We

the land! I dub our new nation Spira -- after my daughter, left behind on

The feed cuts. A few seconds later, it begins to replay. While interesting,
 it is quite distracting.

<Pose Tracker> Seraph Yvain has posed.

"We do what we must. It would be interesting to study this place, but we have to prioritize ensuring its secrets are not misused." This is Yvain's answer to breaking things, and he does notice that Xantia feels better when smashing. That's fine. Smashing is very good. But there, too...

Once they emerge from the corridor and the catwalk, a great elevator stands before them. "Access Elevator," Yvain translates, though it may not be necessary. He looks around for the console. "...If the two of you continue to be good with machinery," he says, "I can read what the console says--"

Distraction happens, and Yvain tilts his head, looking at the woman in a suit--then the man speaking. The man with the spiral eyes.

"...Governor Alfred Bedd..."

He watches in some wonder, but after a moment begins translating directly; the second time the message comes through he gets what he missed the first time. "Like at that shrine..."

Eventually he finishes, and he looks to the others. "I wonder--who were these 'gods of their own' that were not Althena? Ten years here..."

He looks around, thoughtful, thoroughly distracted, as he gets out the cider again. "Here," he offers while they either discuss or work, and either is fine. He forgets briefly that time is a thing.

"It is said in our history that Althena brought the people from a dying world, that She rescued humans. But it would seem..."

He considers. "This is well outside Althena's Boundary. I suppose they traveled a long way to evade Her..."

<Pose Tracker> Billy Lee Black has posed.

Billy reaches for his pocket. He produces that black book again. The cover is leather, the bindings new, but he flicks it open with a practiced precision. He looks at it with the face of a man suppressing his reaction to something distasteful. He flips through a few sections, eyes scanning it coldly.

"...the first settlers," Billy says, looking up as Yvain translates. "Brought here from Filgaia? This...would explain the amount of mysteries tying this place to our home, but it seems like it raises more questions than not."

He looks to Yvain, and nods. "And ours doesn't speak of her or anything like this at all. I suppose given the battering Filgaia's taken, it's not a surprise to know we've lost much. Still..."

He claps his book shut around a finger, steps up to the console, then flips it back open to his selected page, starting to push buttons outlined clearly on the page. It's a short-hand description of certain features of Zeboim operating systems? Apparently??

DG: Billy Lee Black has used his Tool Decoded Gospel toward his party's challenge, Sweet Child o' Mine.
<Pose Tracker> Xantia has posed.

Well, Xantia was feeling better.

"Uuugh, not another elevator," she complains, for obvious reasons. At least it looks different from the others. "This one doesn't spin, right? Tell me this one doesn't spin." She looks dubious when it's implied she's good with machinery. Does that mean she should smash it? Because that sounds like it means she should smash it.

It's probably a good thing that a distraction happens before she makes up her mind on what to do. At first, she's mostly just paying attention to the images. "...definitely not where it used to be," she muses when she sees the open sky above the city in the images. But when she hears some of that translation, she sharply turns her head to Yvain.

"From Filgaia, really? So... huh..." She trails off, rather than voice her thoughts. But that does make the similarities she noticed earlier make more sense. Sort of. Lots of unknowns remain, of course, but it's certainly interesting to learn that elements of Filgaia have ended up on Lunar since that long ago.

She absentmindedly sips cider, watching the video replay one more time. It's difficult to say what she might be thinking. What she ends up saying is more in a broad sense. "Well... from what I've seen so far, I can understand wanting to get away from Althena. ...no offense, Yvain. It's just... well, she hasn't made things easy, with the decisions she's made recently."

...Was she supposed to do something? Oh, right, the console. She eventually walks back over, but it might be better if Billy manages something before she gets there, given how direct her solutions tend to be...

DG: Xantia has contributed a Wits Basic Action toward her party's challenge, Sweet Child o' Mine.

You come to the northernmost side of the city. Here, there is a large plaza,

<Pose Tracker> Seraph Yvain has posed.

"There are many more questions," Yvain admits, and considers. "I wonder... I suppose to Filgaia, those people simply disappeared; I can't imagine Althena would have advertised that She was taking people with her to those She left behind." He also doesn't know why she left people behind. It brings an unpleasant set of questions; there are good reasons, yes, but...

"None taken," he says to Xantia. "I don't understand Her recent decisions, to be honest. She's upended a thousand years of doctrine. I hope to ask Her for myself one day."

The elevator does, eventually, open. Billy makes it work eventually, though he doesn't like it. But Yvain...

He looks a little green. "..Something about this place," he says, shaking his head. "I..."

"I will... be right behind you..."

DG: Billy Lee Black has drawn a new Challenge.

You finally get the elevator doors open. You find that the inside is a
massive hangar. It once fit dozens and dozens of Gears, but those are all
long gone. Most of the empty mechanic bays are dusty and haven't been
touched in centuries. There is an exception, though, on one wall: a large,
bay, with the Zeboim word "ISSACHAR" stenciled under it. Here, there are
spaces in the dust that suggest something was removed from it very recently.

Beyond that, there are glass panes overlooking an absolutely enormous room
-- cavernous, nearly the size of New Kasim City itself -- and filled with an
enormous, highly advanced battleship. The name is stenciled on the side:
 HEIMDALL GAZZO

The facility name is written above the ship: COFFIN OF 100 EYES

The doors there are sealed. However, there is a large doorway opened,
leading to an elevator that leads upward... and offers a promise of escape.

It seems that the removal of a Gear from that bay has disturbed a security
automaton. A six-legged walker enters, with two gatling cannons, and a large
crane arm ending in a claw. It turns, spotting you, and squawks in Zeboim:
"Intruders!" Then, it opens fire -- and punches that huge claw down for you.
=Dungeon Conditions: Wound====================================================
<Pose Tracker> Billy Lee Black has posed.

The world was burned, Yvain had quoted. That didn't actually happen, of course - not by the time this place had come to be, at any rate. Or had it? Wasn't Zeboim destroyed in.... "The Great Conflagration," Billy murmurs. "Is that what they mean, when they say the world was burned?"

He looks back, as Yvain's complexion turns. "Catching up to you, is it?" Billy says, some kindness returning to his voice. "We'll take it from here. Rest."

Soon, the elevator opens up, and Billy can step forth into a tremendous - GARGANTUAN - Gear hangar. He looks on in awe. "Not even the Ethos hangars were even close to this scale!" he gasps, stunned. But that's not the only surprise. Picking his jaw up off the floor, Billy notices the tracks of moved equipment. "And one....that lay here this whole time. Was this what they were here for? This Issachar?"

And then...

"No," Billy says, his mouth dry as he looks down on the behemoth vessel below.

"No, it was that, wasn't it...a battleship from the age of Zeboim....you could conquer both worlds with a thing like that!"

Billy grabs for his guns and turns to dash for the nearest means of progress he can find. That, though, is blocked soon, by a giant walker clunking out of the walls, buzzing and shrieking in machine imitation of anger. Billy reaches back for his longbarrel, firing once, twice with the shotgun mode, before snapping open the breach to plug in the Ether blaster cartridge. "Get out of the way!" he roars, snapping the breach shut.

The whole gun lights up as it processes the incoming energy, shortly before disgorging a piercing blast of blue-white light at the thing's core.

DG: Billy Lee Black has used his Tool Ether Rifle toward his party's challenge, End of the World (As We Know It).
<Pose Tracker> Xantia has posed.

Xantia's contribution to the whole console business wasn't much, in the end. She didn't break anything, but she did quickly back off from it. Mainly due to not knowing a better way to deal with it than breaking it. Thankfully Billy gets it before she seriously considered that alternative.

She's not up on her ancient history enough to contribute much in that respect, but she does look back to Yvain with concern. "Are you alright? If you're hurt, I could try healing you. Well... giving you magic so you can heal yourself." It doesn't sound like she thinks that's a big deal. Compared to telling him how exactly she learned to do that, it isn't.

But she wouldn't begrudge anyone who needs a break taking one. She nods to Billy as he assents to take it from here, she's good for it.

She can only look around in awe at the large open space beyond. Such a big city, and there was still so much more to it than they could see. She doesn't even take notice of what was recently moved. She immediately zeroes in on the battleship. She feels some of her nausea return as Billy confirms her suspicions.

"You suppose it still works? After all this time? ...well, I guess the Karlsefni still did, huh? I hope we got here first... if we can get it open--"

She's interrupted by the appearance of a machine that speaks a word she finds that she actually understands, but its intentions are obvious enough regardless. Activating her ARM, she rushes in to try and fend off its crane-claw with her energy blade. She'll try to keep it busy, to help Billy take it out from a distance.

DG: Xantia has used her Tool ARM Blade toward her party's challenge, End of the World (As We Know It).

---------------------------< Challenge Information: >---------------------------
You find the elevator leading upward. It rushes you up to the surface; it
seems that it luckily connects to it, from whenever New Kasim City was
buried and Zanarkand later built atop it. It rises up, to near the Zanarkand
Dome. The sun is bright -- almost too bright, after so long below -- but you
 are out.

But then the nearby buildings shake, as something flies overhead. Something
buzzes nearby... and you see the distant form of a Gear, having already
 taken flight.
