|Type: Entry |Dungeon Ability: Agility |Challenge Rating: 2 |
---------------------------< Challenge Information: >---------------------------
You've found your ship back to Glenwood. It isn't remarkable: a frigate with
a large cargo hold, meant to carry enormous stores of food, supplies, and
more. Such ships have been the very backbone of the supply chain to Spira,
and the ones that survived Sin are in Kilika in large numbers.

You cannot simply walk aboard. The docks have several guards posted, and the
boarding area is full of knights, nobles, and the like. However, there are
several ropes that lead into a hatch on the side. You can scurry over those
-- you will need to be quick, to avoid the watch -- and make your way into
 the cargo hold.
=Dungeon Conditions: Slow, Stupify============================================
<Pose Tracker> Xander Lovell has posed.

When the Fangs aren't murdering, they're Drifting -- or trying their best to pretend to while murdering interrupts them and causes complications in every possible Drifting relationship they could have. But today is the promise of new locations. New adventures. New places to see. On the moon.

Xander doesn't hate the moon.

(This is Xander for Xander likes the moon very much.)

Xander wants to see more of the moon.

He may have pretended otherwise or make some token complaints, but it all comes down to a single simple truth: to see more of the moon, there must be Crimes. But when you've come to stomach murder crimes, nautical crimes are nothing.

"It's... an adventure," he concedes to Riley as he looks around the stock of the docks. Xander tosses a coin to himself, then flicks it away, ricocheting it off of a post and sending it rolling down the docks to create a distraction -- and an important opening -- before trying to steal toward the ropes to illegally board a ship.

There's some perfume lingering on his collar for its steadying alchemical effect.

DG: Xander Lovell has used his Tool Autumn Mist toward his party's challenge, Sneaking Into the Cargo Hold.
<Pose Tracker> Magilou has posed.

                            Press /\ to view skits!

"Okay, Miss Magilou. The operation is to sneak onto that boat."

"I don't understand that word you just used."

"This is a sneaking mission, Miss Magilou!"

"You're going to have to speak Magilou. It's the only language I understand."

"Miss Magilou? Miss Magilou?! MISS MAGILOUUU!"

    ~*~*~

    "WOO-WOOP...!"

that's the sound of Magilou, on a Geoboard, sailing merrily above the great Galley Gabriel, which is the name of this boat now, deal with it. She crashes onto the deck, kick-flipping the board up into her hands. "Are you prepared?! This vessel is now under the command of the great, illustrious sorceress, Lunar's pride and joy, the peerless MAGILOU--"

This is about when a swell hits the dock. The dock rolls. Magilou tumbles, ass-over-head, off into the water.

    "What," asks a Guard.

"She was definitely wanted," says another.

"Do we fish her out, or..."

So anyway, they eventually get to doing that, which turns out to be plenty distracting. And by the time they do...

    "Is she... dead?"

"Do we still get a reward if she's dead?!"

"I think Neo-Vane would wanna hear about it, they're full of sorcerers."

"Whatever, just -- just put her in a box, we'll deal with it when we get back. And if the Captain asks, this was NOT my fault."

So that's how the surely extremely dead Magilou is escorted into a boxy coffin, and a couple of very nervous and distracted sailors traipse down to the cargo hold to fling her down there to worry about later.

    ...

A funeral dirge inexplicably starts playing.

    The coffin shakes once.

    The coffin shakes twice.

A hand shoots out from it, bolt-upright, and Magilou rises. "I liiiiiiiiiiiive...!!!"

Conveniently, she's already in the cargo hold, so she doesn't have to worry about sneaking on.

DG: Magilou has used her Tool Normin Breyve - Geoboard Activation! toward her party's challenge, Sneaking Into the Cargo
Hold.
<Pose Tracker> Riley Arwell has posed.

"Glenwood must be extremely delightful if they're making it so hard for people to go there," was what Riley concluded, upon being turned away from their attempts to board a boat without Crimes. He surveys their target, giving a considering squint and motioning toward the hatch to the cargo hold.

"So we could stow away, then?" Xander doesn't argue with nearly his usual vehemence, which Riley takes to indicate that he loves the idea. "It's an adventure!!"

And so, taking advantage of the distraction with the coin, he follows Xander's lead in sneaking to the ropes, never guessing what awaits them within the cargo hold...

DG: Riley Arwell has contributed a Agility Basic Action toward his party's challenge, Sneaking Into the Cargo Hold.
<Pose Tracker> Avril Vent Fleur has posed.

Part of the reason ships to Glenwood are so difficult to get passage upon, Avril had learned, is because they are completely commandeered by the Guard and are made up solely of those vessels that had made the journey to Spira without being destroyed by Sin.

One hopes that the return voyage will be uneventful, with that in mind.

But that aside, it remains true that they need to get passage to Glenwood, and the distance involved means they haven't a chance with their Gears. So the three of them had come up with a cunning plan to sneak aboard which

    SNAP FORWARD TO THE PRESENT!

had met with immediate disaster once they had gotten to the docks. A patrol had forced them to separate from one another and now crouched behind some crates, Avril can see the opportunity presenting itself to her and possibly her alone.

    "..."

...given how close some of the Guard are to her now, even giving up isn't an option anymore. Holding her Medium close to her chest (so as to quell any light) she leaps for the point to which the rope connects to the ship with the speed the Guardian grants her.

(...one hopes, or she really is going to jail)

DG: Avril Vent Fleur has used her Tool Sea Medium toward her party's challenge, Sneaking Into the Cargo Hold.

==========================<* CHALLENGE - The Barrel *>==========================
|Type: Exploration |Dungeon Ability: Brute |Challenge Rating: 1 |
---------------------------< Challenge Information: >---------------------------
For hours (and perhaps days), now, it has caught your attention: the barrel.

 Not a barrel, /the/ barrel.

It is near the camp built amidst the crates. Unlike the other barrels, it
sits in a relatively open section. It is by itself -- and you're not sure
why, but it doesn't tip or rock or roll about with the movements of the
waves. It has gnawed at you: what is in the barrel?

You have to know. And thus, you find yourself with a lid sealed by pitch...
and it's just stuck on there. But if you open it up, surely, it just /has/
 to be good!
=Dungeon Conditions: Bad Luck=================================================
<Pose Tracker> Xander Lovell has posed.

"Shh!" Xander hushes, hand pressed to Riley's mouth as they have to pause and wait for a guard to pass. He lets out a breath only once the coast is clear before motioning Riley on with him.

But it is an adventure, and there is a thrill in the successful sneaking, the promise of new places to explore, and the smell of the ocean breeze to accompany them. Xander looks to Riley, something in his expression softening.

"Plenty of supplies they won't miss. I guess it'll be like camping," he says. "Well, quiet camping." He's not sure if he should frown or smile with his next thought: "...Like when you'd sneak into--"

I liiiiiiiiiiiive...!!!

Xander leaps up about three feet straight into the air and lands on all fours with an arched back like an actual god damn cat before springing up right.

"Magilou?!"

He looks to Riley, then spins around and immediately goes to the hatch to leap off the ship into the water if he has to.

Instead, there is a successfully boarded Avril in his path.

Xander stares at her, blank faced and mouth halfway open.

<Pose Tracker> Riley Arwell has posed.

Well, quiet camping.

"Yes, it's just us and the mysterious supply boxes," says Riley, bumping Xander's shoulder. He is already eyeing the crates and barrels with hundry curiosity, though long sea voyages aren't exactly known for their delicious food. It's mostly the fact that the wrappings are concealing the contents...

At any rate, he and Xander are not alone with the supplies, as he is soon to learn.

I liiiiiiiiiiiive...!!!

Riley's mouth forms a stunned O, as Xander nearly bursts through the ceiling and tries to flee, only to find his escape cut off by Avril as she emerges into the hold. Around that same time, the ship is unmoored, the ropes falling away to leave them all trapped together, for better or for worse.

Riley gathers Xander closer with a protective wrap of his arms and gives Avril a wary look. "We snuck aboard first, so we have seniority and you aren't allowed to attack us or make terrible judging faces at us for being evil," he says. A glance flicked toward Magilou. "Magilou has... even more seniority, I guess." An extra beat for processing. "... ... Magilou, is that a coffin??

Regardless of any fights or judgy faces that may occur, the journey continues. And the supplies continue to call to Riley. One barrel in particular, which refuses to budge or roll, calls out to him in particular.

"I think this one's special," he declares, starting to smash into it with a shovel that has lately been revealed to be meant for burying ritual sacrifices. Smack, smack, smack.

The chilling certainty of the fleeting impermanence of mortal life wafts off of it with each smack.

DG: Riley Arwell has used his Tool Shovel of Valmar toward his party's challenge, The Barrel.
<Pose Tracker> Magilou has posed.

"It is I!" Magilou declares, brightly, as she hops out of the cabin and shakes herself off. "Ugh, sea water," she grumbles, only to point fingerguns at her damp skirt. "Magikazam..!!"

That's The Spell For Drying Yourself Out Before Your Books Are All Ruined, apparently.

She grabs a dead fish from the cleft of her magnificent hat, and flings to to Xander. "Looks like we're..." Her hands clasp as she wriggles, down to up, in unbridled glee. "... stowaway buddies! And look! You brought another friend, too!"

Magilou immediately swans over to Avril, arm over her shoulder. She will, of course, swan off somewhere else if she gets shoved away. Possibly even with an overexaggerated spinning animation. Either way, there's no escaping her words: "We're gonna get along great. You just follow my lead, and everything will be peaches!"

Wait, so if Magilou has more seniority, and she's trying to get Avril not to stab the evil forces of Valmar, then...

Instead of explaining that, Magilou points finger-guns to Riley, and says: "None can slay the great and mighty Magilou!"

    ...

    ...

    ...

The Great and Mighty Magilou is approximately this insufferable for the entire span of time between getting onto the boat and realising there is a forbidden barrel. Somehow, despite her bombastic tone, the Guard doesn't immediately hear her and come down to investigate why the corpse woman is talking. Maybe they just don't want to be cursed by a ghoul witch, which is a reasonable thing to be worried about.

Anyway, at this point she's got a journal open, and is narrating to herself, because of course she is. "DEAR DIARY. Day two, hour six, minute thirty-seven. I fear Riley is slowly going mad. Of course, this is fine, for he wasn't quite sane in the first place. My efforts to dress Xander in the most wonderful of costumes has thus far proven unsuccessful, but I am certain he will soon find the logic in my pineapple hat. Our mysterious stranger is incredibly cute, which must be why she's so full of murder."

Magilou does not help with the special barrel while she writes this down in the slightest. Maybe she's providing... moral support?

DG: Magilou has contributed a Brute Basic Action toward her party's challenge, The Barrel.
<Pose Tracker> Avril Vent Fleur has posed.

    Avril climbs aboard the ship!

Avril... has enough time to first parse the fact of the open coffin (she knows that they're for dead people; there had been some confusion about this in the past) with a woman sitting in it, and then second and also the most crucial fact of the moment--

Xander Lovell, previously guilty of trying to kill her friends and dead center in front of her.

...The fact that Avril has immediately summoned a sword (from apparently nowhere? a keen eye would have noted her baring the hilt first) and given him a stare that could cut glass might explain her feelings on the matter.

"Why are you here?" she asks him.

And Riley, who is also here. Riley, who is taking important initiative and pulling a protective arm around Xander. Avril has yet to move.

"...Are you undead?" she asks Magilou, which is too the point and also an extremely rude thing to just ask someone.

"We were attempting to sneak aboard," she explains, but the fact that the boat is getting underway to depart the docks might mean that..

...that's she's going to have to hope for the best for their sakes (or at least hope they're not in jail right now).

Also now Avril has a very different problem, perhaps, in the shape of one...

"Your name is Magilou, then?" she asks, glancing over at the witch as if she gets this all the time. "I see. My name is Avril Vent Fleur," she says, indicating herself with her free hand. "It seems that I have been separated from my friends. Are they companions of yours?"

Avril's opinion of Magilou may depend on how she answers this question.

Time passes and the ship is underway. But they weren't exactly able to carry what they needed for the trip, and sneaking topside is ill-advised. Therefore, they must avail themselves of what they can find.

"This is quite a mysterious barrel," Avril remarks upon gazing at the enigmatic object. "I wonder whatever may be within?" She glances over at Riley pensively (as she's been prone to doing of late) but--

"Then let us find out." She brings out that sword-hilt again but this time hooks a finger over the trigger, pulls it, and...

And now instead of a sword, it's a laser whip! How convenient(ly destructive, especially when lashed at a mystery barrel)!

DG: Avril Vent Fleur has used her Tool Absolute Zero Beam toward her party's challenge, The Barrel.
<Pose Tracker> Xander Lovell has posed.

Avril has a sword, and so Xander immediately having a knife. Riley grabbing him, thankfully, knocks him out of any urge to spring into hostility. Or, well, it redirects the hostility as he wriggles and gashes. "Hey!" A moment later and he goes limp in defeat. At least until: "Don't give Magilou seniority!"

He catches the fish with his face before it falls to the floor. Alas, Xander must resign himself to what's happening, as usual, and can only pray the bloodlust doesn't settle in somewhere along the trip. (To Valmar? Valmar's not going to do him any favors, and no other god is going to listen.)

...

With a long journey, there's practical situations to consider. There's already three immediate jobs to ready himself for concerning food: 1) make sure Riley doesn't eat himself into a fruit coma, 2) make sure Avril gets enough food in case her good heart translates into being self conscious about stealing all what she needs, 3) figure out what Magilou's problem is and mitigate whatever the hell damage that's going to cause.

It turns out Magilou's problem is mostly Being Magilou and there's no force that mitigates that. There's only growling at every increasingly silly hat she produces.

(Give it a few more days, Magilou, you might be wearing him down.)

Insomnia hits harder with the added company, and the dark circle under Xander's eye is as pronounced as ever. At least they know why it's there now! He sighs as Riley takes to smashing a barrel with a shovel. "Riley, please put that away. I'm begging you --"

Oh no, Avril's helping him.

Xander buries his face in his hands and the only moral support he's providing is how enjoyable it might be to rub in the value of the contents within the barrel once they get it.

DG: Xander Lovell has contributed a Brute Basic Action toward his party's challenge, The Barrel.

Everyone needs water. Fortunately, there is plenty of water in the cargo
hold -- stored in barrels -- and you've found some near your camp, amidst
the large crates. But, during one trip, when you crack open the barrel,
something seems... wrong. The water inside just seems... thicker, somehow.

Then it shoots out, pseudopods grabbing at you. A slime has found its way
inside the barrel -- and now it is trying to eat anyone that should come too
 close!
=Dungeon Conditions: Fright, Injure===========================================
<Pose Tracker> Riley Arwell has posed.

Why are you here?

"Nothing inherently terrible," Riley attempts to reassure Avril, before she and Xander come to blows. "We just wanted to see the other continent." He does not say, and perhaps it goes without saying, that they may kill someone when they get there, because they kill people wherever they go. But only if they happen to be there at a time when they need a sacrifice. And at least as far as the boat ride goes, that time isn't here yet. But Riley keeps a close eye on Xander, knowing that the bloodlust tends to come on earlier in the cycle for him, and this is a lot of close quality time with people Valmar would sooner have them sacrifice than befriend.

A few days pass, during which Xander may not have managed to get any sleep at all. Riley attempts to soothe him to sleep with his usual methods, which include singing to him and petting his head like a cat, but this probably backfires for Xander due to extreme embarrassment in the presence of Company.

Magilou keeps them apprised of seemingly her entire inner monologue via an ongoing string of diary entries.

I fear Riley is slowly going mad...

"Hey, I think I'm extremely sane for someone in my circumstances," Riley protests. Should Magilou be interested, he is extremely easy to recruit as an accomplice in the Xander hat campaign.

A mysterious barrel arises as a foe, and is confronted with the combined powers of Riley's shovel and Avril's laser whip. Xander and Magilou do not help, exactly, but probably on some level the vibes Xander puts out into the universe wanting them to stop are spurring on their success somehow. When they manage to crack the top off, they find that it is filled with delicious hard cider.

"...It smells like apples! I knew it was special!"

<Pose Tracker> Magilou has posed.

"Whether they like it or not!" Is Magilou's answer to one of Avril's questions, which may or may not make her seem more or less stabbable. (She doesn't seem terribly concerned about getting close to the pointy end of that sword.) She does not answer the question about whether or not she is undead. Because it's much funnier this way. She at least confirms: "I am, indeed, the mighty sorceress Magilou, and Lunar cries out for my safe return!"

Does that mean they can't stab her to shut her up? It probably means they can't stab her to shut her up. Xander particularly got a sunny-side-up smile at his plight over her seniority.

Avril and Riley, working together, manage to unveil -- "Ooh! Sure, it's no cask of rum, but we're all very modern around here, so who cares?" Magilou... is a pirate, alongside being undead, possibly an evil villain, and loud? Here's her great idea: "Heeyyyyy, Riley, you should definitely drink this before it disappears."

Another day passes. Magilou starts a possibly slightly drunken sing-along. Is she deliberately trying to get Riley on her side to put Avril and Xander on the other side together..? No way, she can't possibly be that clever.

Another day passes. Magilou eats all the snacks. A little Normin phases out of her to go phase into some of the other barrels and direct everyone to some additional snacks before they can put Magilou back in her coffin. His name is Bienfu, and apparently Magilou is very mean to him. Apparently not everyone can see him. That's because he's a Seraph, too!!

A third day dawns, and they've run down the water barrel they were stealing from. (It is stealing. They are doing a crime.) "Well," Magilou says, draping down against the floor with all the theatrics of an offended feline, "it seems we are doomed! Without water, there is no hope for us! Oh, cruel fate..!"

Bienfu adjusts his very fine tophat, and points to another barrel. "There's water in all those, Miss Magilou..."

"We are bereft of hope and reason, cleft by the cruelties of the sea, left to madness unto death!"

Bienfu sags in a full-body sigh, before he waves over the people who can see him. "A-anyway... there's plenty of water!!"

Magilou pushes herself sitting, a hand to her own magnificent hat as she scowls. "Stop ruining my bit, Bienfu!"

BUT WHEN THAT BARREL IS OPENED --

    Out comes--!!

A slime, wearing a kingly crown..!

"Well, I don't know why you're looking at me," Magilou huffs, as she deals out some tarot cards rather than deal with the pseudopod which grasps at Avril as if there can only be one true king. Tragically, it's hard to stab something like that with a dagger, too, because the dagger just kind of *glorps* into the slime. It proceeds to cause Considerable Slime Problems.

Meanwhile, Magilou plays with her cards. "I already told you we were doomed, but noooo, no one listens to Magilou. Hmph!" This may well be the punctuation for someone getting a limb glorped into the slime. Maybe the rest of the party can be more helpful.

Meanwhile, Magilou holds up the High Priestess. "Must be an awfully accomplished slime," she says, which is either missing the point or masterful redirection, it's difficult to tell.

DG: Magilou has used her Tool Fortunetelling - Trickery toward her party's challenge, Secret Slime.
<Pose Tracker> Avril Vent Fleur has posed.

Somehow, Avril looks a little skeptical of this statement from Riley. On some level she may be considering the wisdom of killing them both and solving the problem then and there.

But it would make Dean sad, to start, and that's one of the reasons she stands down. However, also importantly:

    Avril's Opinion of Magilou: --

...Well, not every encounter can be a winner.

"I see..." There is a long pause. "I have not heard of you before," Avril answers Magilou rather bluntly, when she says she's the mighty sorceress Magilou.

But still, they manage to work things out at least to manage to get along for a few days--

And on the second day, there was cider!

"Oh! I see. I wonder if it is better than the cider in Gounon," Avril muses, before sampling a little of herself.

More time passes. The snacks are all eaten. But fortunately there are more snacks to be found below (will this cause trouble for the legitimate travelers? maybe.) so this stops any mutinying before it can really even get started.

"Could we not simply create water?" Avril suggests, stretching out one hand as if she were about to do just that (it'll be ice, so it'll have to melt first). "Oh, I see. Thank you, Bienfu," she tells the Seraph, before hurrying on over to get that barrel cracked. But, once the lid is opened, out comes...

    "...!"

Avril's response is to immediately jam the pointy part of her weapon into the gelatinous thing. Unfortunately, this also means she's at melee range with a slime...

DG: Avril Vent Fleur has contributed a Combat Basic Action toward her party's challenge, Secret Slime.
<Pose Tracker> Xander Lovell has posed.

Trying to sing and pet him while other people are present absolutely backfires. Add 'completely mortified' to the list of moods witnessed on Xander during the trip along with growling and silent stoicism. Yes, growling is an emotion.

Riley finds alcohol and everything gets Worse. But after a while Xander has, at least, learned that their noise levels aren't a threat. It doesn't seem they can be loud enough to warrant suspicion. Somehow. Magilou's drunken sing-along does not get Xander to sing, but it does get Xander to glance to Avril in perhaps pained camaraderie. You win this round, Magilou.

Eventually Xander caves and tries some cider himself, using the candles he uses to heat alchemy to heat up servings of it for anyone who finds that more comforting. And maybe he sleeps a little better that night, but this is a horrible thing to have to acknowledge.

(He offers some to Bienfu, too. He is also a member of this misfit camp, even if Magilou keeps him in a coffin.)

Later, TRAGEDY OCCURS. Their impending doom. Or so Magilou says. Xander's already trying to get some water to physically hand her to shut her up (this will not work, Xander, you know it won't) when a new challenger approaches.

Another tragedy: stabbing won't work, as Avril has demonstrated. What a cruel world when stabbing doesn't work. Xander takes one of his candied medicines between his teeth and rolls up his sleeve. Flexing his arm, veins bulge, then break out into roots. Xander curls his fingers like a claw before making a fist and punches into the slime. Valmar may want blood, but roots are roots: he intends to devour the slime from the inside out.

And so Xander attempts to add regicide to his crimes...

DG: Xander Lovell has used his Tool Candied Medicine toward his party's challenge, Secret Slime.
<Pose Tracker> Riley Arwell has posed.

Avril is not terribly enthused to be in their presence, but she isn't trying to kill them, so Riley will count that as a win (just kidding, he will continue to take it personally that she no longer personally likes him now that she knows his true nature and he will continue to make shameless little bids for her friendship throughout the voyage...!

Being undead would explain some of Magilou's mysteries. But they will need more evidence for this hypothesis...

Riley is happy to drink as much of the cider as possible and then join in Magilou's sing-along and pester Xander and Avril to join in as well.

Eventually, as Magilou is bemoaning the end of their water supply, Bienfu emerges. Riley, newly equipped with the ability to see and hear Seraphim, gives a gasp of excitement. "Is it you?? My little rival?? Aww, you are cute!"

When at last they open a new water barrel, a royal slime begins to wreak havok. It is true that you can't do much good stabbing a slime, which is why it is probably strange when Riley chooses to draw his bow and fire a single arrow into its slimy form. The slime, predictably, sort of shlorps around the arrow undisturbed. However, the arrow in this case was a summoning arrow, and a carnivorous flower begins to grow from the wooden floor beneath the slime, rapidly expanding to such a size that it can try to snap up the slime in its large flowery jaws.

DG: Riley Arwell has used his Tool Dark Bow toward his party's challenge, Secret Slime.

A slime has found its way
inside the barrel -- and now it is trying to eat anyone that should come too
 close!

One day, during the voyage, your camp in the cargo hold is disrupted. There
is a loud, rumbling noise... and then -- in a distant corner -- several
barrels break free. Each comes from the Darin and Kelling Company, a
wholesaler operating out of Meribia, known for their large red "D.K." logo
 painted on each barrel.

All of the barrels are rolling straight at you! You need to escape -- and
maybe secure some of your goods before you do, as your camp might be
 squashed!
=Dungeon Conditions: Hesitate, Injure=========================================
<Pose Tracker> Magilou has posed.

Strangely, they seem to be able to be pretty loud without rousing suspicion. Did Magilou cast a magic spell..? Or do the crew just not want to face up to the zombie in their cargo hold that much?

This is a mystery for the ages.

"If you drink Blessed water, you'll rot your teeth!" Magilou chastises Avril, which must surely be a lie, but it was just yesterday that Magilou was saying apple trees are born when books are forgotten down wells and the bookworms mature into roots, so lying just seems to be Magilou's whole thing.

Bienfu, at least, even if he's working for Magilou, seems to be much nicer than Magilou. Truly, he is a victim of his circumstances. Pity Bienfu, who is very cute and handsome and deserves none of this. (This narrative was sponsored by Bienfu.) "Yup, that's me!" He puffs out his chest and his very fine bow, when Riley notices him. "I'm the cutest!"

He's not much help when the slime attacks, either, but that's because he yelps, "Eek!!", and jumps behind Magilou. This is the safest place, if only because Magilou is not engaging the slime.

Tragically, Avril is in melee range with that slime. This means she gets to be right up close and personal to Valmar's wickedness, but this time, it's... on her side? More or less??? Avril does manage to stick the King Slime's crown with her blade, but it goes glorp, GLORP, right back at her. This is the precise moment Xander punches the other side of the slime. Riley, of course, is right on time, sending a Dark Arrow right into the middle of the slime to serve as a seed to grow into roots.

Here's a fun fact about an enrooted slime: They can be cut into itty-bitty bits now they have scaffolding. Avril's slicing, paired with the Fangs' gardening, reduces the slime to tiny little slime chunks. Would Valmar find them tasty? It's not a blood slime, so maybe not.

The crown rolls off and comes to rest at Avril's feet. It's... slimy. But... maybe it's a key item..?

    > Got 1 x Slimy Crown! You should probably wash it.

Bienfu proceeds to flutter over to Avril and thank her profusely for saving him from the scary things. Tragically, seeking comfort is probably Bienfu's idea of flirting.

<Pose Tracker> Avril Vent Fleur has posed.

Avril, perhaps somewhat to Xander's dismay, does sing.
She's fairly good at it, actually.

(fortunately she does not get drunk, like some others. perhaps some level of respect will remain.)

"I do not think that is correct," Avril says, in what is probably a more diplomatic (if blunt) tack when Magilou says that drinking that water will rot her teeth. "I have had it before." ...But does that mean that she was still somehow willing to believe it at all, outside her own experience...?

Truly, there is no helping some people.

Fortunately, Avril is armed when she takes on the slime. Unfortunately, she's up close and personal to it and Valmar's foulness, but in a sort of symbol of 'truce' she doesn't attempt to cut down the growing plant as it eats and eats, and instead focuses her attention on severing those gelatinous tendrils it continuously sprouts.

A crown jingles off a severed royal head (??? is that even the right anatomical part?????) and rolls towards Avril's feet. Considering it carefully for a moment, she picks it up, wipes it off with a corner of her skirt (ew) and after regarding it in the light a moment more...

...sets it atop Bienfu's hat as he makes his approach. It probably won't stay put.

Avril giggles a little, as if pleased. Is this the same person who darn near murdered Riley?

    Time passes.

They're in the middle of playing cards when it happens. There's an audible 'thunk' from somewhere deeper in the hold. It's followed by a rolling roar that almost sounds like thunder, if thunder were also decidedly wooden.

    ABOVE DECKS

    "What's that sound?"

"Sounds like the cargo shifted over the last swell. Don't worry 'bout it. As long as you secured the Darin and Kelling barrels proper, it shouldn't be trouble."

    "Well... actually..."

    BELOW

Oh no. There are so many barrels rolling their way towards their camp! There are only seconds left to grab anything before it's all crushed. Siezing upon her ARM and Medium, it's the latter that glows bright in Avril's grasp. "Lucadia--!"

And she leaps, vaulting towards the heavens (or at least the ceiling above).

DG: Avril Vent Fleur has used her Tool Sea Medium toward her party's challenge, D.K. Barrels.
<Pose Tracker> Magilou has posed.

"Biennn!" Bienfu has a CROWN ATOP HIS TOPHAT. He puffs himself up. "All slimes will fear me!!"

Tragically, puffing up like that sends the crowd toppling... down onto him! He's very small. It lands about his hips. He has a skirt now.

Bienfu proceeds to be wearing his crownskirt for all remaining cutscenes. Magilou makes another attempt to get Xander to wear a pineapple hat as time passes.

"Fifty gil says Riley chokes next round," Magilou says, with a sly grin. "I can see it in your eeeyes..." She leaaans forward, to peer into his with that fey combination of purple and green.

    THONK,

And Magilou lands squarely on her behind, startled by the noise. "Eeeh?!" The barrels are coming down! She may well be squished...!!

Magilou grabs the pot of gil, all wrapped up in a scarf, and unlatches the book behind her. She proceeds to SPROING upwards, moments before the stampede of barrels turns her into a Magipancake.

She just kind of grabs one of the rafters and dangles thereafter, grinning catlike to Avril, who also thought to get up high.

DG: Magilou has used her Tool Super Pop-Up Book toward her party's challenge, D.K. Barrels.
<Pose Tracker> Riley Arwell has posed.

Riley watches as Bienfu rushes toward Avril for comfort. "Oh no, I think he may have been toying with your affections, Xander..."

Avril proceeds to crown Bienfu and give a little giggle. Maybe she's finally warming up to them? Or just... warming up to Bienfu, who is the only one here who isn't evil (as far as Riley knows).

Later, barrels begin to roll! "What in the--! Look out!" Riley tries to outrun one that's bearing down on him, veering to one side in the hopes of escaping its path.

In the meantime, he watches Magilou SPROING past. "How did you... nevermind...!"

DG: Riley Arwell has contributed a Agility Basic Action toward his party's challenge, D.K. Barrels.
<Pose Tracker> Xander Lovell has posed.

When Avril sings, Xander is officially outnumbered. He is defeated. He gives up completely. And maybe he should look a lot more miserable instead of defeat meaning that he ultimately seems to... relax. Just a little. He's not having a good time, to clarify. Everyone else is. He just happens to be here while it's happening and is no longer making growly sounds. That's all!

Though Avril's amnesiac nativity combined with Magilou's Lying As Breathing could be a complication. "It's not correct," he affirms. "Might rot our fangs, but we're a different story."

At least he's not actively hostile for the duration of the trip. Except when it comes to silly hats.

"He's not your rival," Xander says flatly to Riley. He glances to Bienfu. "No offense." Riley gets a scowl at the toying comment.

One less King Slime in the world later and Bienfu gets double hats. Xander sighs in frustration because that might be the thing that's going to start rotting his teeth in a second. Whatever, the journey continues.

Then THE BARRELS.

That wakes Xander up from one time he finally got himself into a deep sleep. He groggily shoves himself up and sighs, pineapple hat still on his head from an exasperated defeat earlier. Xander pulls an empty bottle from his pack and tapes it a few times against his and Riley's part of the campsite with a flick of potion at it. It shrinks right into the bottle, like it were a little toy ship.

"Riley!" he calls out in the meanwhile, looking for his partner to grab hold of and lead away from barrel crushing.

DG: Xander Lovell has used his Tool Autumn Mist toward his party's challenge, D.K. Barrels.

<Pose Tracker> Avril Vent Fleur has posed.

It's a stampede of barrels below! But fortunately the important items (???) have been saved (??????).

This includes Riley, who Xander retrieves (in a manner of his choosing) right from the jaws of defeat! Or, at least, getting crushed by barrels. They're the same thing.

High in the rafters, Avril glances over at Magilou once the destruction has passed.

"Perhaps we ought to change where we are camping. Otherwise, is it not possible they could come back if the ship hits another wave?"

She didn't understand weddings but she certainly understands physics, it seems...

<Pose Tracker> Xander Lovell has posed.

Finally, the end of the journey comes, but the way's blocked off -- no jumping into the ocean for Xander. He hisses a curse, then overhears the guards and looks to the others.

He won't be the one to say it, but the plan is clear: they need to blend in. Xander own exactly one (1) alternative costume at the moment, and it might be illegal where they're going because apparently Althena is more of a killjoy than he is.

At least the cargo hold has more outfits to steal!

"...Why does this keep happening to me?" he asks no one in particular before trying to piece together his own set of clothes for a planet and culture he does not understand. What he ends up with is looking like some kind of hooded scholar of magic in furred hems and embroidery and what not. Ew, wearing clothes like a normal person. This is the worst!

He takes time to make sure a certain pocketwatch is still easy to access. The one Filgaian accessory he'll allow...?

DG: Xander Lovell has used his Tool Not Exactly Broken Pocketwatch toward his party's challenge, Nothing to See Here.
<Pose Tracker> Riley Arwell has posed.

Riley is RESCUED from a barrelly fate, and plants a small kiss upon the side of Xander's face, once again indifferent to mortifying him in front of their companions.

The time comes to make their departure, which is going to mean passing for paying passengers in a culture with which he and Xander are... less than entirely familiar.

"What do you MEAN music and dance are ILLEGAL here?!" is Riley's woe-stricken complaint when he learns that 'bard and dancer' isn't going to fly in terms of assumed identities. He contents himself merely playing an instrumental montage theme as they try on different costumes.

Riley leafs through the possible options, at a loss. "I'm a musician so I think all my instincts are going to be inherently criminal, here. Magilou, what should I wear? I leave it in your capable hands." This is not at all a good idea but perhaps Riley likes to play with fire.

DG: Riley Arwell has used his Tool Musical Interlude toward his party's challenge, Nothing to See Here.
<Pose Tracker> Magilou has posed.

"No one catches the great Magilou twice!" The great Magilou dismisses the continuing threat of barrels. The pop-up book at the back of her skirt is just going to be popped out with the image of a dove for the rest of this trip. (That's how she sproinged, Riley.)

Magilou proceeds to drop down and immediately get punked by a barrel which was late to the stampede party, or perhaps simply didn't embed in the scenery quite as hard as the others. She goes tumbling, and puffs her cheeks up as she lifts a hand to declare: "Oh, that doesn't count! I wasn't even on a ladder!!"

So, yeah, they move camp. And Magilou is still insufferable, but luckily, the end finally comes into sight.

Tragically, she gets one more chance to hurt them.

"It's time... to be Lunarians!" Magilou declares, with unbridled glee, as she looks over the various Filgaians (and Avril, who is just kind of weird, but she hasn't heard of Magilou, so obviously she's from the stars). "And boy, is it your lucky day! Because if there's anything I know, it's alternative costumes!"

She pulls out a book, and reads from it. "The scholars of Neo-Vane! The soldiers of Pendrago! The quaint mountain life of Zulan! The many lives of Lohgrin tower! What life shall you lead?! We need. More. Mirrors!"

Luckily, Bienfu is here to unveil which chests have mirrors in them. And clothes. By the time Magilou has dressed everyone up...

She, herself, has put on a pair of pink harem pants, and traded in her magnificent hat for an open high pony tail. A white shirt is all zig-zaggy flared at the neckline, and she's wearing long pink gloves and bracelets, to boot. A blue belt cinches around her waist. It evokes.... 'someone'.

Luckily, it's no one who exists in this universe, so they're not here to call her out on her theft.

DG: Magilou has used her Tool Mayvin's Accounts toward her party's challenge, Nothing to See Here.
<Pose Tracker> Avril Vent Fleur has posed.

The long (and slightly awkward at points) journey has come to an end. It won't be too much longer until they can escape the confines of the hold (a place that Avril, truthfully, has gotten rather tired of at this point, and not even as a result of her current company in any regard) and re-emerge into the sunlight.

...The lack of sunshine is the real reason why it has been a little bit Suffering for Avril these last few days, but she's managed. It's not been too dark in here, or too cramped. And it hasn't been cold.

But it seems it won't be too easy to just walk out, judging what they can all overhear. She glances at the others, and whispers, "Whatever shall we do? Should we attempt to run for it?"

    Xander, though, has a plan.

    "...Oh!"

Some digging through the robes and various accoutrements ensues.

Avril eventually turns up a straw hat, some dark blue robes... and the rest sort of makes itself.

She carries in her hands a mirror when they make to exit the ship. If it shines mysteriously, that only means that this particular black mage -- face lost in the shadows shed by their hat -- must be a very important person that no one should bother at all.

Come to think of it, Avril's reminded of her last trip to this part of Lunar. Except that time she had gone and dressed up as a horse instead. Rebecca helped.

DG: Avril Vent Fleur has used her Tool Mirror of De Soto toward her party's challenge, Nothing to See Here.

You've arrived in Pendrago! You've made your way up to the deck -- disguises
from the cargo hold procured -- and see the sun for the first time in days.
You also see the spires of Glenwood's largest city, as the frigate pulls up
 to the port.

As you're ready to disembark, a couple of guards give you long looks... but
it seems that your disguises hold up. You make your way down, and into the
 port district of Pendrago.
=Dungeon Conditions: Treasure=================================================
<Pose Tracker> Xander Lovell has posed.

After the pineapple hat, Xander is willing to take any more of Magilou's advice. He uses it to throw some robes at Riley for his own Lunar appropriate scholarly look.

"Our actual identities aren't disguises," Xander says to Riley, both to try and cheer him up and not realizing the depth of what he's agreeing to with that. "Wait until we're off the ship." It'll still be illegal, but there will be more room to run.

But disguised as they are, they get away easily enough, and as they safely get to the port district, Xander pauses to look to Avril and Magilou.

"...It's been..." Xander hesitates, "...Something." So eloquent. "Take care of yourselves. Not -- that you'll believe it from me." That's directed a little more at Avril. He sighs. She's not supposed to believe it. Well. Whatever.

It's all he manages to say before taking Riley by the arm to try and guide him away. "Come on, let's go."

<Pose Tracker> Magilou has posed.

"Heeey, don't be such a downer! You take care of yourselves, too! No hard feelings if I blow your faces up while you're doing that, okay?" Magilou makes a heart shape with her fingers as she winks to them, which might reveal... something... about Magilou's moral compass. If she has one. "And you do you, cutiepie!" She adds to Avril, which is just excessive. Apparently Magilou likes Avril just fine.

But once the ne'erdowells (and Avril) leave, there is a voice from the cargo hold.

"Uh, midship... what happened to that witch we, you know..."

"I thought we said we weren't going to talk about that."

"Yeah, but -- uh -- the coffin? It's empty?"

    "........................................."

There is a mad scramble upon the ship, as Magilou says, "oop! See you later, punks!", and slips off into the crowd.

A few days later, brand new wanted posters appear in the Church's gathering points. 'WANTED: The Witch, Magilou, for CAVORTING, SINFUL BEHAVIOUR, ILLICIT DANCING, GENERAL IMPROPIETY, and DARK RITES OF RESURRECTION, amongst other crimes. Believed to be last seen in Pendrago. DO NOT ACCOST ALONE.'

(The picture of Magilou has a moustache doodled on it.)

<Pose Tracker> Riley Arwell has posed.

They manage to make it past prying eyes, and the time comes to part ways. It's certainly a relief to be back out under the sun. Though as for their companions.... Riley turns to Avril with a hopeful expression. "...So after all of that forced togetherness... ... do you like us at all again? --No, shh, don't answer that. Let's not ruin it with words." He starts to back away with Xander in case maybe the truce has already ended and they need a running start.

Along the way, he nods to Magilou. "And Magilou, thank you for being... whatever you are. An ally against boredom, if nothing else. We'll probably run into you inexplicably again in another two weeks or so!"
