Gerudo

An Ancient People

Long ago, the Gerudo were a tribe of warrior-thieves who lived in Hyrule's outlying deserts. They were a magical race; all Gerudo were women, and every child born to a Gerudo would be Gerudo. Thus needing to go outside their borders to reproduce, the Gerudo had a relationship with neighboring nations that they would call "lively" and their neighbors would call "contentious."

Then their king was born. Once a century, it was said, a boy would be born among the Gerudo; and he would by right of this divine providence be their king. But the divine includes cruelty and greed. They trained him under the finest tutors among them, scholars and witches and warchiefs all. In return, when he was grown, they followed his promises, ill suspecting of the evil at his heart. Their sorcerer-king Ganondorf Dragmire stole away the divine artifact the Hylians protected, descending all into chaos. The war that followed ultimately saw the Gerudo banished from Hyrule's lands for their part in it, and so they wandered, nomads, to the north.

In this way, the Gerudo were far from Hyrule when it fell. They were able to create an enclave of sorts, far to the north, but as time wore on and the North turned from merely cold to unlivable, the Gerudo struck a deal with a people they knew as the Sheikah for the secrets of a technology to survive.

Survive, endure: And one day, when the world may need them again, return.

That day has come.

A LIGHT CAST INTO GOLDEN SKIES

The Gerudo enclave in what is now Filgaia's arctic north was once known as the Final Resting Place of the Gerudo; now, it is not so final. What was thought to be their tomb and testament was indeed, only a place to rest. The Great Resting Place is at approximately the same latitude as the similarly frozen kingdom of Arctica, but nearly on the other side of the planet in terms of longitude.

At the center of the Resting Place is a small army of cryogenically preserved Gerudo. The Gerudo awoken by Ganondorf's attempt to enslave them anew are now working on the project of slowly and safely bringing their sisters back into the present. Their leaders are the Chieftain and Champion who were their leaders those many years ago: Riju, the young sorceress Chieftain; and Urbosa, the warrior Champion.

For the Gerudo so awoken, most are now either staying home to assist in transforming the temple and its outlying areas into a living settlement; or are striking out into the world, to witness what has become of the world, and bring that knowledge home. The Gerudo vault has only just been opened in early 505 PC; at this time, no Gerudo has been in modern Filgaia longer than that.

A LIGHT TAINTED BY CRIMSON SKIES

The Gerudo are inextricably marked by the dark history of the King of Desert Thieves, Ganondorf Dragmire. It was his evil that saw them banished to the north, and it was in hopes to repel him again that they cast themselves into the future. Most have some opinion of the King of Evil. Rarely is it positive.

Most Gerudo out in the world now are Drifters, by deed if not creed, and problems they face are common among Drifters. Many Gerudo focus their efforts within the Great Sea area, though they may not know of their distant connection to those islands.

Necessarily, the Gerudo have experienced much hardship; before their long sleep, they traveled from the desert to the snowy north, and now they find themselves thrust into a world they must fight to be a part of again. The Gerudo have even before they left led a life of subsistence and endurance, persevering to pull a life from uninhabitable environs. It has made them a hardy people in both personality and strength.

Though the old Gerudo reputation as inveterate kidnappers was undeserved, they are a people who value wit and cunning in getting what they want. Far better a prize snatched away with cunning than by smashing its owners to gravel. The Gerudo have quite few sorcerers among their existing number, although they do have the potential for any style open to Filgaian natives. Rather, they tend to be rogues, sages, or beast-tamers, with some warriors in the fashion of their Champion, Urbosa. Some also command inherent powers that one nowadays would be inclined to call Ether, such as Urbosa's mastery of lightning. This power is, much like Veruni Ether, not quite Solarian Ether, but more like it than anything else.
