"I don't want to hurt anyone... Please don't stand in my way."

Growing up in an orphanage in Damzen, Hannah always had big dreams of following in the footsteps of the drifters who found her as a baby, going on adventures and exploring ruins to find technologies and secrets of the past. Her thirst and passion for learning--and especially for magic--earned her a full scholarship to the prestigious Sielje Academy to study Crest Sorcery. She excelled in her coursework, until one day she was involved in an accident. Amid the investigations and rumors, Hannah made a disturbing realization about her magic and fled the school, becoming a drifter. Her magic, though, grows more powerful and slips further out of her control with each passing day, meaning the rumors from school continue to follow her around. Hannah has become more guarded and withdrawn, her only companion a red-tailed hawk named Zephyr that accompanies her as she tirelessly searches for a cure to the curse afflicting her magic.

Background

Damzen

Hannah has never known her real family; she was found as a baby by drifters and taken to an orphanage in Damzen. There she did not have a particularly glamours lifestyle, but she was well taken care of and, by most accounts, had a happy childhood. She had an eagerness to help others, pitching in with taking care of the younger children around the orphanage as she got older, and then eventually around the town. She was also bright, readily soaking up all of the lessons the schoolhouse was able to provide and still crving more, as well as incredibly curious. This curiosity was most prominent around magic and technology, and she would often be found dismantling things just to see how they worked. Eventually they also started teaching her how to repair things; if nothing else, she could put back together what she took apart, it helped feed more of her curiosity, and eventually she was apprenticed to the town's handyman.

Growing up, Hannah had an unusual guardian angel in the form of a red-tailed hawk. He showed up shortly after Hannah was brought to Damzen, and always stayed nearby. He even seemed to actively protect her, scaring off threats or pulling a rambunctious Hannah away from dangers. As Hannah got older she noticed the hawk and started to talk to him, claiming he could talk back to her. She declared him her friend and named him Zephyr, and after that, they were truly inseparable. Hannah would take care of Zephyr, encourage him to come along with her as she went to school or went about town, and ask his opinions. As she grew older she realized that not everyone could converse with animals, and stopped claiming he was speaking to her. She still talked to him, however.

But the other part of her curiosity revolved around the wider world around her. Damzen was a small town, and Hannah knew there was a whole lot more out there to see. She knew she had been found by drifters as an infant and admired them, pestering them with questions whenever they passed through town. Hannah talked constantly about how she would love to go on adventures like they did, to explore ruins and discover lots magic and technology. (Often she would proclaim her longing to become an adventurer while also proclaiming, in the very next breath, that she'd never be able to. She had too many responsibilities around town, between helping the younger kids at the orphnage, her apprenticeship to the town's handyman, and a thousand other things besides. Simply out of the question.)

One of the drifers she adored--and indeed, one of the drifters who found her as an baby--was Marivel Armitage. The Crimson Noble would stop by to check on Hannah, and bring her books to read--books the small town of Damzen could never hope to provide--all of which stoked Hannah's curiosity even further. Hannah particularly enjoyed books on technology and magic, naturally, and would pester Marivel with questions about how they worked or her adventures.

Sielje Academy

Hannah's talents did not go unnoticed, however, and eventually she was awarded a full scholarship to Sielje Academy to study Crest Sorcery. Hannah initially balked; she had too many responsibilities around town, there was simply no way she could just drop everything and go off to some school. But cooler heads prevailed, and eventually she set out for Sielje with Zephyr by her side (or rather, on her shoulder, as he had become accustomed to doing.)

It was quite an adjustment to make. Leaving the only home she had ever known, attending a 'real' school for the first time, or even just seeing snow, which was practically unheard of in the desert she grew up in.But she worked hard to adapt to her surroundings, and eventually found her stride. It was here she also made the acquaintance of Eleanor Klein, as they shared several classes in Crest Sorcery, though they still ran in fairly different social circles.

But Hannah was starting to have problems with her magic. There were sudden surges or spikes in potency, or a spell would get just a little bit out of her control. Nobody could explain it and she redoubled her efforts and training, but it didn't seem to quell the problem. If anything, it got incrementally worse.

Thinkgs came to a head one night when some students got their hands on an advanced spell they weren't meant to be casting yet, and it got out of control. Hannah came upon the scene and tried to help with her own magic--but in her panic and desperation, she had another flare-up--and it made the situation worse. Thankfully the disaster was contained without further complication and nobody was injured, but a full investigation was launched. Rumors swirled, and in the middle of all this pressure and scrutiny, Hannah made a disturbing realization:

Something was corrupting her magic.

Horrified at the realization, and scared of being found out, she fled. She took everything she could with her, intending to continue her studies, and left a few notes for those she felt closest to. One of those was for Eleanor, to thank the other girl for standing up for her in the middle of all the controversy. And just like that, her time at Sielje came to an end.

Drifting

Hannah struck out to try and solve the corruption plaguing her magic. She quickly ruled out Malevolence and Malice--much to her dismay. Those were at least known quantities. Needing to be able to make a living for herself as she searched for more information, she turned to drifting. She was young, and a bit green, but her talents in magic, her half-completed education in ARMs, and all of the stories she grew up with at least gave her a foothold. Not to mention, of course, that having Zephyr watching her back was a big advantage.

But as her issues with her magic continued to worsen, some flareups and close calls caused rumors to start circulating: a young girl with unsettling displays of magic that narrowly avoided being a liability instead of an asset. She started withdrawing from others more and more, working feverishly to contain her magic, which only fed into her reputation.

This became her life. Wandering aimlessly, keeping herself distant from others, working to keep her magic under control, and attempting to both continue her research into the root cause of her magic's corruption and continue her studies in magic and ARMs.

Reconnecting

While Hannah was working a job for the Adventurer's Guild, Ruth Pauling happened to observe her offputting magic. Ruth Pauling and Ida Everstead-Rey later attempted to approach her to offer support, but were rebuked. During the encounter, however, Hannah learned that Eleanor was missing. And what's more, word of the sighting spread through ARMS and attracted the notice of Marivel Armitage, who sent Hannah a letter asking for her assistance. Faced with the prospect of potentially losing her best friend and letting down her mentor... Hannah accepted the request. She barged her way into the mission to rescue those lost in the Memory Maze, surprising Ida in the process, who was leading it.

During the mission they encountered a much younger Marivel, grieving the loss of her family after daring to stand up to Lord Blazer. Hannah did her best to console her, admitting, in an indirect way, just how much the Crimson Noble meant to her. She offered the assurance that she would not be alone forever, that she would find others who would become precious to her and would always come to her aid if called. They successfully extracted those lost within the Memory Maze, and then confronted the combined might of Boomerang and Luceid trying to reach Anastasia so they could in turn fight Lord Blazer. Hannah fought, because she had to protect herself, but realized... she had no personal investment in the fight. This worried her.

Afterwards, she and Eleanor finally had a long-overdue reunion, where Hannah discovered, much to her chagrin, that Eleanor thought she had died after falling out of touch for five years. Hannah immediately regretted how she had treated her friend, and had explained why: her misbehaving magic. Eleanor offered Hannah a position in ARMS, to lend her strength and to make use of their resources to figure out Hannah's problem, but Hannah deferred the decision to later. Eleanor did insist that Hannah come to Klein with her and stay in the manor, to keep her friend close. Hannah eventually accepted.

This provided some much needed stability to Hannah's life. She started to reconnect with her friend and to meet new people. Then, one day, she saw a traveler in the road, seemingly in dire straights, and cautiously approached. It turned out to be a trap by the Fangs of Valmar, Riley Arwell and Xander Lovell. They ambushed her, and she fought them off while nearby friends came to her aid. One thing that did stand out to her about the incident, however, was Solitaire. She misinterpreted the situation and thought Hannah was attakcing her own mentor, and attacked the sorceress in turn. Then Hannah witnessed Xander shoot her in an attempt to drive her off. This stuck with Hannah. She had already hurt her best friend on accident once; she never wanted to reach the state where she did it asecond time on purpose.

The Fangs' last attack, a coffin of thorny vines, failted to burry her, but did tear through her favorite cloak. Their actions, however, got Hannah to break down some of the walls she had placed around herself.

Hannah eventually decided she wanted to return to Sielje instead, and eventually worked up the nerve to discuss this with Eleanor. Eleanor, of course, supported her in this effort, with the offer to join ARMS left on the table for later. Meanwhile, she kept meeting new people, and finding herself getting involved in events again. It wasn't always easy, or perfect, but it felt good to become involved in things again. To be able to make a difference.

There was, however, one connection she had been avoiding reestablishing. Her oldest and most important one: home. So it decided to come find her instead. Tipped off by Marivel, Susanna Tanner appeared at Klein Manor to read Hannah the right act, and then pull her into a tight hug to tell her how much she had missed her. It still took Hannah a little bit of time to work up her nerve, but eventually she returned home, with her best friend Eleanor at her side.

Once she got there, and once Miss Rochelle pulled her into a comforting embrace, Hannah realized just how foolish she'd been to stay away so long and how desperately she had needed her family. The reunion wasn't perfect, of course, there was plenty of awkwardness and hurt feelings, most notably with #David, a buy she had promised to tutor more in ARMs, but she forged ahead regardless. Then she found out an old mining robot had been unearthed, and that David had been assisting with getting it running, and went to go check it out, calling upon a number of her Drifter friends to check out the fresh discovery.

It was not a mining robot.

It was, in fact, a Svalin-class Witchbuster, an ancient Hyadean war robot constructed to nullify and capture mages with so-called 'anomalous' magic. And it had its sights set on Hannah. The robot attempted to lock down Hannah's magic, but it instead had the effect of making it go haywire in a way never seen before. They defeated the robot, but, but the emotional damage of having her magic called 'anomalous' again and again was severe.

It did afford Hannah the opportunity to explain things to David, but then Susanna had a new revelation for her. She and Marivel had, indeed, found Hannah as an infant. But rather than being found by the side of the round... she had been found in a mage's lab. They had resisted telling her about this, wanting her to have a peaceful, happy life, but given what had happened during the fight... they couldn't hold back the truth any longer.

This revelation shook Hannah, and her already fragile emotional state after the fight took a dive. She left Damzen quietly, wanting both to put some distance between herself and the events that had happened, but also to escape the speculation of the townsfolk. This persisted for a few worrying days until Eleanor came to her with some news: Sielje had an offer for her. Rather than invite her to enroll in classes at Sielje, they thought it would be more beneficial for her to stay in the field and gain real field experience. Instead, they wanted Eleanor, a Sielje graduate, to help proctor her lessons and administer exams. Hannah accepted, and since Hannah didn't have to leave Klein now, Eleanor reiterated her offer to join ARMS, andHannah accepted. One of her first acts as a member of ARMS was to share everything she knew about her magic with her new colleagues, including the recent revelation of where she had been found. Susanna helped tell the tale, and then left to Ignas to try and find the lab again.

To the Stars and Across the Sea

Hannah continued to involve herself in events, and was present in Kattelox when the 'Mother Load' was revealed--and it turned out to be the Sorcery Globe instead. Thee of the The Ten Wise Men attacked then, causing mayhem as they attempted to make off with the Sorcery Globe, which they called the Quadratic Sphere. During the ensuing fight, Jophiel attempted to disrupt Hannah's ability to cast magic, which prompted another wild outburst of her magic. The three Ten Wise Men made off with the Globe, making off to Marduk, the New Star. Hannah joined the Drifter community in constructing a rocket to give chase.

The pitched battle with the Ten Wise Men gave way to tense confrontation with Innominant. His Domain was immense and suffocating, draining all emotions and motivation. Hannah, however, had a rather unexpected reaction to it. While the domain brought her to her knees, after her emotions were sapped she was able to get to her feed and function temporarily in a completely emotionless state. And what's more, for that brief instant, she seemed to have perfect control over the anomaly plaguing her magic. Thankfully, timely intervention by Anastasia neutralized Innominat's threat, but the Ten Wise Men still completed their efforts to teleport to Energy Nede.... and they brought the rest of the Drifters with them.

Hannah is currently stuck with the rest of her Drifter Colleagues on Energy Nede, with no way home in sight yet. She is concerned, of course, but she can take comfort in one thing: She's not on the sidelines anymore, and whatever happens next, she'll be there to take part.

Powers and Abilities

Hannah's biggest asset, of course, is her friend Zephyr. A seemingly ordinary red-tailed hawk, they have been inseparable for all of Hannah's life. They have a deep empathic bond that allows them to communicate at a distance and even share senses with each other. She rlies on Zephyr for both emotional and tactical support, gaining a second pair of eyes to monitor whatever situation she's in.

Hannah is also a decent shot with a rifle, having been taught in Damzen how to fire and maintain gunsmoke ARMs (it was deemed better to teach her rather than risk her taking one apart by herself.) She has an ARM she recovered from a dig, a Tyrfing NU-03, which is a Collapse-era repeating rifle manufactured to have unusually high accuracy. She restored it and takes extremely good care of it as one of her most prized possessions.

And, of course, there is her Crest Sorcery. She usually prefers to avoid using it if at all possible, instead preferring to either outright avoid a conflict or to try and intimidate someone into backing down from a fight. (Her rifle helps with that.) Her typical style is large elemental attacks. Her spells are potent, but this comes at a cost: there is some sort of corruption or impurity in her magic that she has yet to identify. It renders her magic powerful but wild, making controlling it and avoiding collateral damage much harder. To combat this, she has researched and designed new crest graphs for herself that seem to either block this mysterious influence or to properly channel it, which helps, but isn't foolproof.

She's eliminated several possibilities for what it might be, but is still having no luck identifying the root cause. And recently there have been some worrying incidents. While normally there is an oddness to her aura, and her magic manifests in slightly unnatural ways, it has been shown recently that attempting to lock down her magic or disrupt its natural flow can have a quite unintended consequence. In both the fight against the Witchbuster and her first fight against Jophiel, her magic was seen to rebel against constraint: the air around her starts to distort visually in minor ways, with the air rippling, the sense of wrongness in her aura intensifies dramatically, and her green eyes start to glow brightly. The wildness and potency of her spellcasting is further increased in this state as well.

Under the influence of Innominat's Domain, however, there was a far different effect. Once her emotions were fully drained, Hannah seemed able to function in this state, albeit in a completely emotionless manner. What's more, her spellcasting became eerily disciplined. A barrier she cast shortly after entering this state was rendered as a geometrically perfect hemisphere, with none of the associated buckling, warping, or crackling that is normally associated with her barriers. Hannah does not have an explanation for this, and being in this state felt greatly disturbing once she regained her emotions.

Notable NPCs

Zephyr

Zephyr is a seemingly-typical red-tailed hawk. He is most often found perched on Hannah's shoulder, perched nearbye keeping an eye on her, or circling overhead to watch for trouble or scout ahead. He serves as scout, assistant, emotional support, but most importantly as a trusty friend. Zephyr shares Hannah's love of children, and is generally helpful... though his appetite often gets the better of him, and he can be rather impatient when he's ready to go hunt. Despite that, though, he often serves as a voice of reason to Hannah when she is making a particularly unwise choice, and has been known to bite her ear to get his point across.

He showed up at the Damzen orphanage when Hannah was still very young, and seemed to immediately take an interest in her. He was something of a guardian angle for her, keeping the inquisitive tot from harm. As Hannah grew older and became aware of him, she named him Zephyr and started to talk with him, holding conversations with him and asking him to do things. Eventually, though, she seemed to grow out of this, still talking to him, but not necessarily with him. Despite this he was still a bit uncannily intelligent, often seeming to understand Hannah and to do simple favors.

Upon reuniting with Eleanor, Hannah admitted that she and Zephyr could, indeed, understand each other. It wasn't until meeting Riesenlied and seeing her demonstrate her empathic abilities that Hannah finally was finally able to put a name to what she and Zephyr share: a deep empathic bond that they've experienced ever since Hannah was young, possibly even back to her infancy. They only demonstrate this ability with each other, however; Hannah has not yet demonstrated the ability to share this with anyone else the way Riesenlied can.

With their bond, Hannah and Zephyr can share their thoughts with each other, and if one of them concentrates they can tap into the senses of the other and even see through the others' eyes. Their bond does not seem diminished by distance, though they are almost always often fairly close together anyway. Hannah will sometimes look through Zephyr's eyes to see what he sees while scouting, though it can be harder for her to focus on her own senses at the same time while doing this. This empathic bond is the basis of their ability to converse with each other. It is not strictly necessary for them to vocalize, but they find it easier to do so as it helps shape the intent of what it is they wish to convey. (Zephyr vocalizes as a normal bird would.)

Zephyr is an opportunistic predator, and will consume anything that's handy. Hannah is quite used to this and even likes watching him hunt and consume his pray. Zephyr is particularly fond of trying meat from larger animals or even monsters that he would not be able to hunt on his own, and considers the latter a treat or a gourmet experience. As an aside, if you wish to bribe Zephyr into doing you a favor, food is an excellent way to do so.

Rochelle

Rochelle (Human, Female, ~40 years old) runs the Damzen Orphanage, and is most commonly referred to as 'Miss Rochelle' by the kids there. She is a Crest Sorceress, though most of what she practices these days is healing minor scrapes and injuries around the orphanage. Originally hails from Ignas, fleeing from some unrest with the assistance of Susanna. She is quite comfortable and happy in the orphanage helping to care for all the wayward souls that pass her way.

Susanna Tanner

Susanna (Feline Beastfolk, Female, ~20 years old) is a former Drifter of some repute, and a talented martial artist, besides. Currently spends most of her time assisting Rochelle with the running of the orphanage, though she is still known to go out and get her hands dirty with minor work every now and again.

She met Rochelle while she was being pursued and intervened to save her. Escorted her to the coast, where she was able to board a boat to Aquvy to head for safety. Susanna stayed behind, but some time later while working on a job with Marivel Armitage, raided a sorcerer's lab only to discover no sorcerer and a completely unexpected infant. Not knowing why the infant was important or if someone might come looking for her later, Susanna made the decision to get the infant as far away from Ignas as possible. They headed to Aquvy, where Susanna sought out Rochelle's help in keeping the infant safe, who was then named Hannah Elizabeth Curie.

Susanna went back to Ignas to keep looking for more clues, but would return again and again to check on Hannah as she grew up. She personally believed she had no aptitude for raising kids (She was a rough and rumble gal, after all. Raising children surely required a more delicate touch, and Rochelle had always had the far better temperament for it, she felt.) But when Hannah found out Susanna had found her as a baby, well... she found it hard to resist that eager, energetic smile clamoring for ever more tales of her exploits...

Okay, so she's not the maternal type, clearly, but... she could be a big sister. Yeah, that'd work.

Over the years, as her search turned up dead end after dead end, she would spend more time in Damzen. Little by little, she found herself acclimating to life there without even realizing it. And one day she realized it felt more like home than anywhere else. And what's more, she had slowly developed that soft touch she never thought she would... though she will deny it any time Rochelle points it out to her.

Amelia

Amelia (Weasel Beastfolk, Female, ~20 years old) grew up alongside Hannah at the Damzen Orphanage, and has now taken on a role as a helper for Rochelle. Some of the younger children even address her as Miss Amelia, which she is still gettingused to. She was far more discontent and lashed out frequently in her younger years, but in the years Hannah was away calmed down a great deal. When Hannah did eventually return home, they were both surprised to discover they had some similar worries, and quickly formed a bond far stronger than they could have made before. Hannah is delighted her childhood acquaintance is doing much better these days, and is determined to do what she can to support her.

David

David (Human, Male, ~15 years old) is something of a younger brother and a mentee to Hannah. He goes by Davey to his friends (though Hannah has lost this privilege for the moment.) He showed a similar interest and aptitude with ARMs from a young age that Hannah did, and Hannah would teach him the things she had learned from Marivel and share the books the Crimson Noble had brought. Hannah promised him that even though she was going to Sielje, she would still come back to teach him. A promise she subsequently broke when she ran away from Sielje and home.

Upon Hannah's eventual return, David was upset with her and refused to hear her out. After being imperiled by the Witchbuster, Hannah saved him and in the process demonstrated her magical difficulties. They were finally able to reconcile after that, with Hannah explaining everything that had been going on, while making assurances that she was not about to leave again.

Hannah is doing her best to make good on her assurances. Recently she brought David to the Fereshte to meet the inhabitants there, and to involve him in the process to design a new wheelchair for Riesenlied. (It went so well, that Hannah is already looking forward to providing similar opportunities and experiences for the other kids in the orphanage.) Hannah still has a ways to go to really earn David's forgiveness and trust back, but David is at least allowing her the chance to do so.

Witchbuster

The Svalin-class Witchbuster is an ancient Hyadean war robot dating back to the Metal Demon Wars. Its overall function was to suppress magic usage, and its specific function was to isolate and capture so-called 'anomalous' magic users for further study. Its understanding of the various magical disciplines is somewhat dated, based on old Hyadean conceptions, but some investigation has lead to a likely candidate for the 'anomalous' magic craft that was to be studied: Ether.

Unearned recently from a Damzen mine, it was mistakenly believe dto be a mining robot. It wasn't until Hannah approached it that it fully activated, not believing her magic to be one of the 'known' types (Crest Sorcery, Symbology, or the work of a Medium.) Its attempts to suppress her magic instead caused it to go haywire in a very worrying fashion. The robot was quickily dispatched, thankfully without much in the way of serious physical injury. (The /emotional/ wounds, on the other hand...)

Because of its provenance as Hyadean technology, the Wayside Outreach took custody of the robot. Some more investigation (and some clever hacking) revealed the parameters of its objectives. It does not appear to possess full sentience, so the possibility that they could explain that the ancient war has ended, that there is a peace between the Humans and the Hyadeans seems remote, but perhaps in the future they may be able to make it understand.
