One of Yevon's Warrior Monks with a nearly heretical aptitude and interest in machina, Kadi nonetheless fights the 'good' fight for her cause. The daughter of an ex-Luca Goer, she's trying to lead the kind of life of service that will make her family proud. However, she just can't shake the urge to reach out and touch the shinies, and dreams of a day when a large enough machina weapon of her own arranging can put an end to Sin. 'Maester Kadi' has a nice ring to it, afterall.

Background

Kadi was born in Luca, in the Spira region of the silver moon. Her mother was a fishmonger and her father -- in her early years -- was a member of the Luca Goers. She was the oldest of three, and had a pretty happy childhood. To call her a 'daddy's girl' would've been an understatement, as she utterly idolized the man and his exploits.

As she grew, she wanted to know everything about how he did the things he did. She wanted to go into the water at every opportunity, but most disturbing to her parents? She wanted to know how the stadium itself operated. Luca's Blitzball Stadium was one of the few 'accepted' uses of machina, but her fascination with it cut a little too close to home for the faithful Yevonites. Her father retired at the end of that season, and the family moved far away from the city life to the island of Kilika, instead.

Now about eight years old, she was left confused about why her father stopped blitzing, but the fact was? She still admired him. The man himself became determined to atone for his daughter's fledgling interest in machina, and chose to serve at the Kilika Temple... despite the urging of members and fans of the Kilika Beasts to try and get the former midfielder to pick the ball up again.

As his interest shifted, hers did too. Kadi became quite devoted to the teachings of the Yevonite faith, and her parents had briefly hoped she might walk the path of a Summoner one day. Still young and wanting to please her parents, she tried...

...but she was bad at it. No, bad would be the wrong word to describe her efforts. What's worse than utterly horrendous? Kadi's efforts to become a summoner, that's what. Beyond that, the girl just had no talent for any form of magic whatsoever. She gave the healing arts a shot, and only successfully managed to harm a test subject when attempting a simple cure spell. It was thought that the dark arts might be more her style, but an effort to wield the element of thunder saw her nearly electrocute herself.

She still wanted to prove her value, though, both to her family and her faith. Thus, Kadi petitioned to train as one of Yevon's Warrior Monks... and while on her martial skills alone wasn't the perfect candidate, her mental aptitude and natural commanding presence gave her an edge that her superiors thought would make a useful tool.

Kadi had slid into a support role within the Warrior Monks, assisting with the development of strategy and making sure the more... physically gifted but mentally unfocused stayed in line. This changed when she got her first taste of machina, though.

The Lucan girl had been accompanying a small squad of newly enlisted Warrior Monks on a routine training patrol, when they were assaulted by a pack of Bombs. Having specialized in the non-physical aspects of combat, she knew about how precarious an encounter with the fiends could be. Two men with flamethrowers, one with a rifle. The former, she knew, would be useless against Bombs. The latter, she didn't expect.

Bravado in front of fellow humans and bravado in the face of fiends are two separate things, and the rifle-wielder didn't have the latter despite proving he had the former in spades. She ordered him to fire; he froze. She yelled louder, he wouldn't move. The flamethrower wielders hadn't been trained on the use of the rifle, but she knew she'd /seen/ it used before.

Ripping the rifle from the man's hands, Kadi became a woman possessed. Spinning and firing round after round from the machina weapon into her foes, and scattering the Fiends into pyreflies. At first, it was nothing unexpected. She was the commander of the squad, the trainees figured she was there for a reason.

It wasn't until the group returned to camp that word spread of the tactician's feat, and the stories of her expertise with a weapon forbidden to the masses met the stories that said she'd never touched one before. Some within the ranks viewed her with admiration as a more capable warrior than expected. Others, with resentment. Yevon made clear that machina were /wrong,/ and Warrior Monks were among the very few allowed to use them, with proper training, to protect Spira. Rumors even circulated that she might be an Al Bhed in disguise.

Of course, the only truth was that she /did/ have a natural aptitude with machina weapon. The feat with the rifle was later repeated with a flamethrower. Any piece of the largely forbidden technology that she was allowed, she excelled with under minimal or sometimes no instruction... and she wanted more. She /needed/ more.

It was here that the first cracks in her faith began. Why would Yevon outlaw machina, when putting machina into more hands like hers - especially hers - saved people? Maybe, just maybe, with a big enough machina weapon, she could negate the need for a Summoner!

These were thoughts she kept quiet. Egotistical she may be, but foolish she was not. She knew that speaking these feelings outloud, especially without the ability to prove it, would mark her as a heretic, get her excommunicated, or worse.

...but if she /could/ prove it, she'd knew she'd go down in history alongside the greats, like Lady Yunalesca. Except /she/ would be alive to reap the rewards of fame. 'Maester Kadi' /did/ have a nice ring to it, afterall... and if Sin ever showed its ugly everything again after her Calm? She'd be there to send it right back to the Farplane.

The failure of Operation Mi’Hen, something she wasn’t directly involved in but certainly paid attention to acted as bandaids to hide the aforementioned cracks. Maybe this was why Yevon outlawed machina for the normal people. Maybe people without her Yevon-given talent simply couldn’t handle its awesome power.

The giant weapon ‘fated’ to defeat Sin may have failed, but while it helped to solidify Kadi’s faith in her religion, it also boosted her confidence. The Crusaders and Althena’s Guard couldn’t stop Sin through technological means, but it certainly didn’t mean /she/ couldn’t.

If anything, it just meant that she was the only one who /could./

Of course, it didn’t seem like the higher-ranking folks in Yevon wanted her to get her hands on the kind of machina that might be needed to end Sin. Rather than sending someone with her obvious aptitudes to hunt for Al Bhed, her squad was sent to guard Macalania Temple; nobody knew where the Guard would strike next, afterall.

Of course, it turns out that the Al Bhed came to her. Well, yes, they came for the Summoner, but that was besides the point. As were the Al Bhed, as the true threat ended up being Sin itself, as the beast shattered the very ice beneath her feet and threatened to put an end to the self-styled Savior of Spira in short order.

...rather than waking up on the Farplane, however, she woke up in a strange ruin, with Sin, her squadmates... everything she /knew,/ just gone. Just her, and her miniature arsenal. It was time to find out why, and see if she couldn’t get her hands on some precious shinies to add to her collection while she was at it.

3b. Tell us about how your character acquired their ARMs, sorceries, and techniques. This is an important part of Dream Chasers and we want to know that information. Please see their respective files for more information.

Kadi is a Warrior Monk of Yevon, and was granted access to the standard armory of machina (ARMs) wielded by Warrior Monks; she has access to both a rifle and flamethrower that she is certified to be proficient with. Kadi would LIKE to have more and will make efforts to obtain them, but hasn't been able to as of this point in the story.

Powers and Abilities

Knack - When it comes to machina and other ARMs, Kadi just has a natural knack to using them. It’s rooted in a combination of her intelligence, curiosity and bravado (or foolishness!), but it makes up for her lack of combat ability elsewhere.

Yevon - She's a minor commander in Yevon’s Warrior Monks. Not a Maester by any means, but probably closer to the equivalent of a lieutenant (using US Army ranks for comparison). There’s people who will listen to her, and probably an equal number that dislike or mistrust her for a) her ability to get where she has, and/or b) her aptitude for machines.

Relationships

Superiors

There aren't a lot of people who get to tell me what to do. These are the few.

  • Grand Maester Mika - What can I say about Grand Maester Mika? A man who's commanded the respect and adoration of everyone who's anyone is someone to look up to, yeah? Never had the chance to meet him face to face.
  • Maester Kelk - He's... there, I guess? I'm not gonna lie, we Warrior Monks don't deal with that side of the Church often.
  • Maester Kinnoc - I guess you could call him my b-- bo... order-giver. If I had to pick any of the Maesters to follow, he'd probably be the one. He respects what machina can do in the right hands, even if Operation Mi'hen didn't go quite as well as we would've liked. It would've, had he consulted me, but I can forgive him. I'm just considerate like that!
  • Maester Seymour - The new guy on the block. Haven't really met Maester Seymour face to face either, but I heard through the barracks that he was present at Mi'hen, too. Can't be too bad a guy if he respects machina, right?
  • Nede - Wait, you want to know about my mom? She's nice enough. Very ... very much a faithful servant of Yevon. I think trying to convince me to become a Summoner was her idea. She was pretty disappointed when we found out I was too valuable to take that risk. I mean, she's my mom. She gave Spira me, so she's pretty great too... but I don't think I'll ever understand her.
  • Ondru - You wanna know about my dad? Well, I can't blame you. He might be the only person out there /greater/ than me. From before I was born, to when I was a little one, he was a Goer, yeah? Best of the best, but we moved to Kilika and he retired. I'll never understand why.

Hearsay

Lots of people out there I haven't met. Spira's a big place. Here's what I know about them.

  • Auron - Some of my fellow monks go back to the days when Auron was one of us. Back in the days before we used machina. I, however, don't know him personally. If I ever meet him, I guess I'll make a decision.
  • Yuna - Everyone's heard about Yuna. The daughter of High Summoner Braska. The leading candidate to bring about the next Calm. Yawn. Talk to me if she beats me to it.

Minions

The nice thing about people is that people have value. Not as much value as yours truly, but more than fiends, yeah?

  • Cyre H. Lorentz - I'm not entirely sure /what/ he is. He may be Spiran, but he has bad taste in Blitzball. What I do know for sure about him is as... terri- imposing as he can look at times... to others, not me, of course... he's very useful to have in a fight.
  • Ida Everstead-Rey - Interesting person I met while exploring ruins, even if she has a strange way of singing my praises. Also... I'm pretty sure that she has grenades like the Al Bhed have. In the wrong hands, machina weapons can bring about Sin. I'll be keeping an eye on her, yeah?
  • Jacqueline Barber - First person I really talked to on Gaia... I mean /Fil/gaia. Useful enough, and generous too. Gave me a map of this strange moon that's clearly more than met the eye. Not from Spira, but clearly recognizes the role of Yevon in keeping her safe if Sin ever shows up here.
