Abandoned as an infant on the steps of a church of Althena, Kourin was raised inside the church, and while she trained as a mage under the masters of Neo-Vane, she has always felt her duty is to serve the Church that raised her. Thus, she served as a member of Althena’s Guard in all but name...until she deserted and sided with those it had been her duty to stop. For most of her life, the only close friend she had was her dog, Spirit, who is always by her side. Now, though, she has begun to learn that she has value and self-worth, and has made the first friends in her life in the Caravan Kinship and others...

Background

Kourin was abandoned as a child by her family on the steps of the Church of Althena, and raised within the church as an orphan. Life in the orphanage was sparse, and Kourin was constantly reminded that everything that she had was through the goodness and generosity of the Goddess. She was also painfully aware that unlike most of the other children, her parents weren’t dead—they just didn’t want her. This awareness made her feel guilty and proved to be a barrier to her making many friends. The adults at the orphanage were kind, but not particularly prone to displaying affection for their charges, and so Kourin never came to be comfortable with others, as this further reinforced her privately-held opinion that she was unworthy of being loved. Later—upon discovery of her talent with ice magic—sent to train in Neo-Vane as a mage to better serve the Goddess. Neo-Vane’s luxury was a stark contrast to her sparse upbringing to that point, and Kourin was never fully comfortable there, either--furthering her isolation as she would not indulge the way the other students did. When she graduated she was semi-permanently assigned as a mage in assisting Althena’s Guard, and was one of those brought to Lunar in pursuit of Lucia the Destroyer. She was very glad to be able to serve the goddess, and the life of a soldier did not suit her so well as she thought it would--to the point that she deserted her post to stand against the injustices she witnessed her former allies committing.

Kourin strives to do her best in all activities, leading some to assume she is haughty or a perfectionist, but in truth she just can’t bear to fail those she feels she owes everything. Her cold demeanour and aloofness masks that she feels that she is unworthy of being cared for or having friends—all rooted back to her abandonment by her mother. She feels that she is worthless and doesn’t deserve friendship or love, and so she keeps her distance as a way to keep from having to deal with feelings she is ill-prepared to handle.

Powers and Abilities

Kourin fights using a combination of very swift swordplay and ice magic. She’s grown talented with a sword and she can hold her own, and it can be a good tactic to appear to be a normal swordswoman and then spew an icicle lance at someone. She is quick and agile, favoring light blades such as the rapier that hangs on her hip, but she isn’t especially strong or sturdy—fighting her is like fighting a swarm of bees. Icy, frigid bees.

Relationships

Caravan Kinship

Spirit: Kourin's dog Spirit was for a long time her only friend. He never judges her and he is always loyal, and he tries to bring her into contact with other people to be friends with.

Jacqueline Barber: Kourin's first friend aside from Spirit--Jacqueline has been supportive and offered aid to Kourin when it would have been just as easy to turn her away, for which Kourin is eternally grateful.

Lunata Croze is a polite waitress Kourin met. She seemed friendly and curious, but also offered Kourin aid and shelter when she needed it. Kour

Shalune Amira likes Spirit a lot! Kourin doesn't really understand how the girl does what she does, but she likes her all the same.

Catenna and Kourin got off to a rough start, but once they had a chance to talk things out they found they had more in common than they at first believed, and now there is a degree of mutual respect and even friendship. She also makes deliciously spicy food, which Kourin is learning from her.

Ethius Hesiod is a strange man, but he has never been anything but kind to Kourin.

Cyre H. Lorentz seems friendly enough, though Kourin doesn't know him well.

Other Allies

Hiro is ... complicated, to Kourin. He's an orphan, like her, but he was among the first people to ever treat her with true kindness and faith in her ability. She likes him, and would--and has--put herself in danger to help him. Her feelings for him may in fact be described as somewhat more than merely "liking" him, though she has no idea how to express that to him and doesn't know how he would respond if she did. She has a rivalry with Ruby, though.

Lucia is the reason that the Guard have come to the Blue Star, and should be Kourin's enemy--yet Kourin has now committed to attempting to aid in her healing.

Lemina Ausa knows that Kourin has left the Guard, and seemed happy to see her free of that group.

Former Allies

Garan Dantear: Kourin was't very comfortable having been placed under Garan's command, more because she's unhappy that he ordered her to stop avoiding people's eyes than anything he actually did. That, and she's painfully aware of the difference in their status.

Thessaly: Kourin was uncomfortable with her fellow guardswoman -- the way the other could tell immediately that Kourin was a mage, the casual warning about the Pyre Witch--Kourin feels like something dark is going on there.

White Knight Leo Somehow Kourin found the courage to tell Leo that she was abandoning the Guard, to his face. Even more amazing, somehow she survived the encounter.

Others

Arleph Ardan met Kourin while she was shopping with Jacqueline and Ethius. Kourin was, predictably, shy around the stranger.

Maya Schrodinger seemed curious about Lunar and Althena. Kourin would happily answer more questions about the Goddess...but not when it will upset those around, as it did with Catenna.

Morgan Newkirk: Kourin has met this man a few times now, and he has ever been polite and friendly.

Noeline seemed to know Zed, and accompanied Ethius and Jacqueline's expedition. Competent. Dangerous?

Riesenlied and her pet dragon Odjn were kind and polite to Kourin and Spirit.

Talise Gianfair seemed to be angry at Althena and angry at Althena's Guard, and allowed that to spill out into her dealings with Kourin. But is her anger truly unjustified?

Zed is a strange young swordsman, who seems to know the Lord of Calamity, but doesn't seem directly involved. He, too, went along on the failed expedition to the ruins.
