Welcome to the MUSH Survival Guide! This guide is tailored around Dream Chasers MUSH, but much of this advice can be applied for any MU* centered around roleplay, though many parts will be entirely subjective.

This guide also contains text and advice from many people, as this is something anyone can add advice or update. If you run across something that confused you that you wish to put in this guide to help others, or something you know more about and want to clarify, put it in here!

Here's the chapters so you can skip ahead as necessary:

Chapter 1: Into the Wilderness - How to connect and log on to Dream Chasers MUSH.

Chapter 2: Crowded Street Corner - Wherein basic mechanics of communication are described.

Chapter 3: You'll Never Be Alone No Matter Where You Go - How to be a good guest, what to expect for the application process, and how to construct a well-rounded haracter. You are here!

Chapter 4: Wings - Where we discuss the ins and outs of roleplay, obtaining roleplay, and the tricks behind scene-planning.

Chapter 5: Stage of Death - Navigating the Gunslinger system, combat RP advice, and other goodies.

I need to apply to get in?

Here on Dream Chaser Mush, we have an application system. We do this to make sure concepts fit within the game. The application is available here. While application styles can vary from person to person, here's an example of one from one of our players.

If applications make you feel nervous, it's probably better to think of it as a collaboration. The staff in charge of applications is there to guide your application, iron out any loose ends, make sure everything is in keeping with canon, and so on. They'll make sure that your character has all the things they need to hit the grid.

More information can be found here.

General Application Tips and Hints

  • Do you want an OC (original character), or a FC (Feature Character)? If the latter, make sure that character can be apped. If you want to know about someone who isn't on the banned FC list -or- on the cast list at all (like social link characters and NPCs) feel free to ask if they're available!
  • As the MUSH has been around for a while, some FCs have gone through some players. Don't worry! You don't have to match their RP style. Staff is more interested in knowing your take on the character. You will need to find out what crucial events have or have not happened in that FC's history.
  • Make sure to provide yourself roleplay hooks to help get your character into scenes. If you're apping a quiet, reserved character, give them several means to thrust them into scenes. Examples: a job, a specific goal that forces them to socialize often, etc.
  • Put any character secrets your character has in your application. They may be an IC secret, but staff needs to know.

Got all that? Then onward to Chapter 4!
