Once a sullen orphan everyone believed was a boy, Naelle changed a great deal once she was able to express her true gender, blossoming into a friendly, cheerful girl with an exceptional devotion to Althena, whose Gift allowed her to be her true self. She’s a hard working mechanic more than a frontline fighter—it’s partly through her efforts and the rest of the maintenance crew that the Dragonship has continued operating even on Filgaia. She’s got very good at scrounging and jury rigging in the past two years, keeping it up in less than ideal environments!

Background

Naelle was once a sullen child, assumed to be male by everyone—but she knew she wasn’t. A wandering priest of Althena finally listened to her, and thus when she was about nine years old she was magically transitioned to be a girl, after which point she knew she’d serve the Church her whole life. After all, it was the Goddess’ gift and the Goddess’ clergy who’d helped her become who she always knew she really was. Before, Naelle had been a pouty, lonely child but once allowed to be herself her natural curiosity asserted itself. She didn’t have much talent at tapping into Althena’s gift directly, but her curiosity led her to learn as much as she could about how everything around her worked. People, people were still a bit of an awkward mystery to her — though not through lack of friendliness on her part, just, she doesn’t get how people don’t want to shake hands while she’s covered in oil or grease or dust and grime from her latest exploration, experimentation, or repair. Her greatest influence was her uncle the man who’d later become the chief mechanic on the Dragonship Destiny, Chief Gus. The old engineer taught her everything she knows about how to keep the dragonship running, and Naelle’s lithe form and catlike dexterity allow her to quickly move around in the gears of the system, making repairs or jury-rigging things on the fly to keep everything running without a hitch. Naelle doesn’t do a lot of formal combat training with the Guard as a whole, but she’s still pretty capable with her oversized wrench, claws, and just being acrobatic and generally aware of her surroundings. She’s also pretty strong for all that she’s not very large—she enjoys armwrestling contests, and other games of skill. Harder to come by, one might think, but the Goddess hasn’t banned them, She’s also been known to produce a deck of cards at a moment’s notice, inviting whoever’s around to play. When it comes time to work, though, she’s no slacker. She helped organize and erect shelters in Adlehyde, without any complaint or expectation of special reward—she just knows how to build, so she did it. At Azado the Destiny was not engaged with Sin, but she was a witness all the same and the great monster terrified her, but she didn’t abandon her post, either. And at the Photosphere, some of the ship’s weapons that she had improved demonstrated their effectiveness in the fighting. Even if she did have to fix the boiler on the fly to keep it from exploding. She doesn’t like explosions. They happen with prototypes, though! And Naelle thinks of the Destiny as the perfect opportunity to make and test prototype weapons, armor, and other battle systems. She hasn’t been allowed to make too many changes, though, especially since her uncle Gus refuses to show her favoritism, going so far as to promote her rival, his apprentice Baz, above her. Naelle responded by requesting a transfer to the front lines. Her lack of experience in the field is offset by her zeal for Althena’s service and enthusiasm in tracking down the enemies of Althena, be they heretics or existential threats, and in spreading the faith to Filgaia’s peoples. She hopes to be able to earn promotions quickly so that she can get the authority to do what she wants to regardless of Gus and Baz. Besides, with the attrition the Guard has faced in the various battles, she figures she can do more on the front lines than under the thumb of a boring, unimaginative twit like Baz.
