"I must remain a monster - or I shall become a monster."

The Beast of Lohgrin is a terrifying creature, a living metallic statue in the image of a dragon. It appears to travellers and bandits, attacking anyone who would venture too deep into the wilderness, though it rarely kills. But there are other reports - from farmers and wandering children and the lost - that the Beast of Lohgrin is a protective spirit, crushing Hellions in its massive metal jaws. And there are old wives' tales, rumours from centuries ago: there was once a woman covered in vines who soothed the plague, who turned into a monster and fled. Could the two be related?

NOTE: The Beast of Lohgrin has since thrown off her metal vessel to reveal her true form: Seraph Boudicca.

Background

A happier time, before learning about 'mankind' and all its problems.

"But, Mama, what is beyond the mountains?"

The Beast of Lohgrin grew up completely isolated, in deep wilderness, accompanied only by an older Seraph named Abilene whom she thought of as her mother. She wasn't called the Beast of Lohgrin back then, mind you. That came later.

"Mama, help me! It is broken!"

She eventually found mankind, as you do, and they were all dying of plague. She convinced her reluctant mother-figure to help, but there was a lot of Malevolence in a village like that. After an unfortunate string of events, her mother was corrupted by Malevolence, and she took the vessel of a religious statue to try and reason with her.

Obviously, that didn't work. And it turned out curing the plague was harder than she thought. Now, see, this is about when she became the Beast of Lohgrin. It was all very sad.

"The wilderness is no place for Men."

Dragon! Dragon! Run away!

In the end, the Beast couldn't go home, so she took a mountain territory instead. Did you know there were monsters in the mountains? Because there were definitely monsters in the mountains. And when enough years passed by, the Beast was bound to eventually find someone being menaced by them. Thus began a long and rewarding career in escorting every mortal traveller off her mountain. This was pretty easy at first, because for some reason everyone was scared of dragon-shaped menaces. Weird, huh?

"... I suppose I ought help them."

The annoying thing about mankind was that they always seemed to have more problems. Eventually the Beast realised that Hellions were menacing the remote farms near her mountain, so she began fixing that problem like she fixed all her problems: savage violence. But, you know, never lingering after she saved them. How are you supposed to make a dramatic exit if you stick around to chat?

"How can I help them?"

For a while there, everything was absolutely terrible. War, madness, despair - the works. But, surprise! Just when things seemed at their worst, Althena came back! And despite knowing nothing about her people, even the Beast recognised her. Joyous day! But she definitely wasn't returning to Althena's side. For... reasons. She had people to protect. Yeah, that's it.

"I must help them!"

Things got better, then they got a little worse, then Althena demanded everyone bring down Lucia the Destroyer. Which presented a problem to the Beast, because she had established a pretty solid territory, right? She'd been helping these people for, like, two centuries now. But seriously, you can't just deny your Goddess. It's just not done. So, you know, she thought about it, but in the end she knew another Lord of Calamity was just too much suffering for mankind.

So, like, time to make friends with all those heroes and adventurers she's been chasing out of her wilderness all these years...? Oh boy.

Powers and Abilities

  • A dangerously pointy metal vessel, which works as her Technique. Bitey!
  • Wind-elemental Seraph magic - both white and black. Woosh!
  • A saddle big enough to carry multiple people, with plenty of storage in saddlebags. Handy!
  • Notably, her Seraph senses are dulled, due to a combination of general inexperience and the concentration required to hold up a big metal statue all the time. She can still sense active Malevolence, though.

Relationships

PCs

Nimue says that some mortals are better than others. I do not believe her, and yet it is true that I have seen the most impressive feats since I left my mountain...

General Drifters

Is this truly all you do? Just go into the most dangerous corners of the world and explore them for the sake of it? I swear, mankind shall be the death of me.

  • Ida Everstead-Rey: You are very kind. I am sure there is much I do not understand, but I am grateful for your assistance. Could you be my very first mortal friend..?
  • Id: You have the most terrible sense about you, as if an oncoming storm, but... you at least seemed willing to talk.

Seraphs

They are like me! They are like me! I am not alone! There are others in the world! I know so little of the ways of my people, but I can learn. I would trust a Seraph with anything.

  • Seraph Nimue: You have spent so much more time in this world. Surely you are wise, and yet, it is difficult for me to believe everything you say. But I will try to give mankind their chance, as you say.
  • Seraph Ragnell: You were very helpful and reassuring! And, again, you are older than I. It seems I am... much younger than I thought, in the manner of my kind. Could you truly be so troublesome?

Althena's Guard

They are Althena's devotees, and they have my support. Mortal command does not suit me, but were they to ask for my assistance, I would surely answer. After all, they have been very helpful to me. I am... glad that they have received me so well. ... I was a little worried.

  • White Knight Leo: As expected from one of Althena's foremost champions, you are a leader par excellence. I admire your devotion to the people, and yet... there is a hardness to you, is there not?
  • Margaret: What a forceful woman you are! I am grateful for your assistance.
  • Corwynt: Your fervour towards our Goddess is agreeable, but... I do wish you would clad yourself against the snow. You will catch a cold!
  • Grea Thelton: We both know fear, and in truth it makes fools of us both. I worry for you, Grea.

Caravan Kinship

They are very kind. Concerning in their general enthusiasm for danger, but... kind. I should like to meet them again. I appear to have made some friends there, after all.

  • Jacqueline Barber: You seem a level-headed woman, and your potions were quite helpful. I am gladdened to know my presence is desired.
  • Cyre H. Lorentz: You are quite strange. I do not believe I have ever been called 'cute', in any fashion. And yet, I find I cannot dislike you. Is this what is known in the world of Man as... charm?
  • Lydia Seren: What a carefree girl. Are you truly so untroubled by life?
  • Catenna: I must remember to acquire cloaks, so that next time you will not be so cold. Thank you for coming to my defence.
  • Locus: A 'superhero', you say? Well, you are... certainly energetic.
  • Arleph Ardan: I am happy you regard me as noble. You seem... more composed than your friends. I wonder why?
  • Ethius Hesiod: I should not like to trouble you. I mean no harm to your friends.

NPCs

Nimue is wrong, because everyone is important. I have seen this in the hamlets and the villages. 'Twould be easier, were there insignificant mortals in the world - but each has their own essential value.

  • Seraph Abilene: Mama, I am so sorry.
  • Althena: My Goddess, I love and serve you.
  • The hamlets of Lohgrin: You are my people. Were the choice my own, I would defend your herds until the end of days. I am sorry to leave you undefended in these coming years. It is for the greater good.
  • Silf: Oh, my. You are a little daft, aren't you? And yet I am glad you were willing to help me.
  • The town of Zulan: You are remote from me, and yet I worry for you still. Will driving that monster off and bringing you your medicine truly be enough...?

Trivia

  • If the Beast were to fight in her natural form, she'd prefer to use a set of tonfa as her weapon. But she hasn't done that for a long time!
  • She enjoys birdwatching, though she doesn't know the names of most of the birds.
  • Her other hobby is braiding vines and weaving branches, which is very difficult with claws, let me tell you. Please appreciate her work.
  • If she ever uses archaic or formal language incorrectly, don't worry, it's just a translation error.
  • She borrows her voice from Motoko Kusanagi of Ghost in the Shell fame, another character who uses an artificial body.
