Vin Barrett is a member of Filgaia’s Baskar tribes. While he was born in the Baskar Colony itself, the young man makes his home in the Badlands of Aveh, basing himself out of November City. There, he generally finds work as a guide for folks looking to journey into the Badlands. Easygoing, he enjoys his job as a Drifter, always on the lookout for new and interesting places to go and explore. He has a strong sense of wanderlust, wanting to see more of the world before he eventually bows to the inevitable and returns to Baskar Colony to settle down as a Zoa Priest. He’s at home in the Badlands, never seeming bothered by the heat, surviving with hard-won experience, a deft hand, and the guidance of Moor Gault, Guardian of Fire.

Background

Vin's folks were Drifters as well, a fact which he cheerily blames for giving him enough of a case of Wanderlust to spend his time in November City as well as taking jobs leading him as far away from the Badlands down to Adelhyde. He's also from a fairly large family, so he has a rather large network of cousins, uncles, nieces, nephews, and friends thereof.

His aunt, however, is possibly his greatest nemesis: She'd really rather he quit this youthful rebellion nonsense and move back home to the Baskar Colony to put his abilities to use serving the Baskar, not wandering about as a Drifter.

Powers and Abilities

Vin's obtained the Blessing of Moor Gault, Guardian of Fire, and is a fairly proficient Shaman. However, he does try to keep this under his hat, so to speak, so he's not always up front about the whole 'Shaman' thing. Well, unless it's a choice between injury or not. No sense getting hurt if you don't have to! In addition to the normal Shaman 'tricks', he, unsurprisingly, tends to specialize in dealing with heat and fire. In Vin's case, he normally can handle arid environments quite well, as well as using it for minor tricks like turning a sturdy leather bag into a makeshift steamer oven by making it fireproof.

He also uses an ARM he found while out hunting in the desert one day, the Fennec R66. Said ARM is basically a very durable Shotgun/Rifle combo weapon, and he usually has it tucked away under his ever-present cloak, just in case.

Due to Vin's huge number of relatives, he spent a lot of time growing up learning bits and pieces from them, usually staying with some relative or another while his parents were working. He's a bit of a jack of all trades, master of none (Outside of his experience with magic and ARMs, mind).

Like some Baskar, Vin's pretty adept at living off the land. One of the main sources of his non-Drifter income is actually taking advantage of that, selling home-made Meat Jerky and Herbal Medicines to city folk. It's the source of his generosity with small sacks of beef jerky mixed with dried fruit and herbs. From his point of view, well, if he can gather the stuff easily for free, why not give it away to folks who need it?

Also brews a mean jar of fermented Cactus Juice, which has a bit of a kick if you're not used to it.

Recently, he was the recognizable 'star' of a book in the 1 Gella Novella Series "The Rough Riders", a series of risque romance novellas centered on Drifters and thrills. Vin tends to wear more clothing and has a smaller neck than the cover art, though.

Relationships

Acquaintances on the Road of Life

Abigail Ivers - "Another fellow Badlander. Ran into her when I was out on a Berry Cave run for more supplies. ...Yeah, it didn't go well, but she was nice enough to offer me a spot of roof to sleep under at her traveling casino train car, which is right friendly of her. She's undoubtedly trouble, but it'd probably be amusing."

Cassidy Cain - "Came across this blonde bundle of Trouble-with-a-capital-T when running a shipment of Cactus Juice and Medicine to one of Uncle Algie's clients. She was in a bedsheet, laughing, and running like the dogs of hell were on her heels. Stupid useless compassion, why did I have to be a gentleman? I just know she's going to be trouble down the road...Ah well. Least it won't be boring."

Claude C. Kenny - "Ran into him when I was out on a scavenging run through the ruins of Lahan. Seems alright. Knows Zed and Marshall, I think, from previous expeditions."

Fei Fong Wong - "...seriously? This kid's worth 30,000 gella? I...just don't see it. He's a scruffy, down-on-his-luck martial artist hobo. I really can't see him being responsible for destroying villages. Boggles the mind."

Gwen Whitlock - "Ugh. She's nice enough, and she's a really good courier, but every time I see her, she has a new letter from Auntie. Seriously, Auntie? Oh, and she also threw up on my cloak after getting smashed on Cactus Juice. In an oyster bar full of fire-obsessed bandit nutjobs. Tch, Cityfolk."

Josephine Lovelace - "Drifter, Archaeologist. Ran into her a time or two. Seems competent. Really smart pet pigeon."

Marshall Henry Smythe - "First ran into him on that Lahan expedition. Apparently a traveling salesman for BLASTEMOL!@. Knows his explosives, more or less. Knows Zed and Claude."

Matilda Whitehead - "The quintessential city slicker in over her head. Ran into her along with Abigail out at the Berry Cave. She's got a really weird ARM and has some equally strange armor on her. Not very combat oriented. Mind, I can't blame her for booking it from that friggin' Undead Beast."

Sephilia Lampbright - "Ran into her a few times now. Cute kid, although as she will insist, she is NOT a kid. Long way from home. Like, -really- long way. Spilled the beans on where all these weird newcomers are possibly from, if I can believe that. Has a neat trick where she can turn that toy she carries around into a huge engine of destruction. Truly, Lord Chauncey of Foxington is to be admired."

Sorey - "Interesting chap. Doesn't seem to be from around here. Flame of Purification, Malevolence, Althena, Silver Star, Can see the Invisibile...Shaman? Need more information. Also, one of his friends makes amazing snacks.

Talise Gianfair - "Someone else who sounds like they're from a long way off. Seems to be Sephilia's self-appointed big sister type. Nice enough, I suppose."

Zed - "Weird guy. Exuberant. Tough as nails. Seen 'em shrug off getting exploded. Awesome scarf, and he can control the thing like a second limb, to a degree."

Mistrusted Strangers

The Black Ties: "Bunch of crazy damned Badlands Pyromaniacs. They're starting to recruit in force down here. Lot of disaffected youngsters or the like. Hell, they tried to get me into their gang. Took my declining at the time gracefully enough, but I wager we're going to cross paths again some time. Asides, I'm fond of my current clothing. Like hell I'd give up my beloved cloak just for that."

Samuelh the Molotov - "Dear Zephyr, this man's breath is horrible. He can hold his liquor, mind you, and claims to have some fondness for the Baskar...but since he was the one trying to recruit me into the Black Ties, I'm taking that with a grain of salt."

Parbody - "Saw her chatting a bit with some other lady and Gwen, before I hauled the courier away. Weird. Why's she wearing a gas mask? Wait, Black Ties, probably fire related."
