It's been a long road for Spira's so-called "Legendary Guardian" -- though he'd just as soon not be called that. From young, naive warrior monk trained by the Church of Yevon in the fighting arts with a large, single-edged sword he calls a "Katana" (though is more like a zweihander) to disillusioned old veteran, the changes in Auron's life -- and unlife -- have been drastic and sudden. Unbeknownst to most of Spira, he is Unsent, a soul that came back after his death to try to keep the promises he made in life. Auron once lived his life for Braska, and later, he and Jecht. Now that he's Unsent, it's for the two people he cared for the most that he continues to exist beyond his death. He cannot -- and will not -- rest until Sin is destroyed, and the deaths of his lord Braska and his best friend Jecht are avenged.
Auron was trained as a warrior-monk of Yevon, his weapon of choice being a large single-edge blade he calls a "Katana". Besides the danger to an opponent that being hit with a sharp piece of metal this large, Auron can also channel energy into this Katana to accomplish a variety of effects, most built around breaking an enemy's battle strength in various ways.
Also, unbeknownst to many, Auron is Unsent, and this allows him to survive injuries that a living person would not be able to survive.
Auron's strength of will, even before he died, also deserves a mention here. After he was wounded by Yunalesca, he managed to travel from Mt. Gagazet almost to Bevelle, with nothing but a single night's rest. After he died, he came back Unsent, and kept himself together for ten years to see to Tidus.
