Catenna is highly unusual among the Zortroa Kinship in that she adheres to religious traditions similar to those of the Ellurian Baskar, including a version of the Heritor tradition utilized by the Fereshte of northern Elru. These traditions seem to have descended specifically through the maternal line of her family: Her mother, Maurea, is an inferior beastmaster but a dedicated Zoa Priestess - likely the only one among the Zortroa, to Catenna's knowledge. She passed her Medium down to Catenna, who was favoured because she was born beneath the light of a full moon.

Catenna is the fifth of seven siblings: In order, they are Alba, Laccoas, Vallis, Riima, Catenna, Sinea and Terae. Her mother had won the heart of the warrior Cientas - or really, more caught his eye than anything, though he eventually grew frustrated with her devotion to the Guardian religion, drawing fault lines through the family. The religion drew fault lines through Catenna's family: She was effectively her mother's favourite and learned much of the Guardians and of Celesdue, lessons to which she took readily, while her brothers and sisters resented that favouritism and became traditional Zortroan beastmasters. By the time Catenna was eight, she was consistently teased and tormented by her siblings because while they had cool imps and wolf pups and bears as familiars, all Catenna had was a baby screech owl who came around sometimes to hoot at her. The taunts and jibes undermined her confidence. While her mother insisted that these things took time and she'd learn someday, Catenna began to view herself as somehow flawed - as if she were worse than her siblings and undeserving of her mother's special attention and shamanistic education.

Pinning this young woman down is a challenge. She's evidently not city folk; she speaks seldom, explains even less, and seems more at home in the wilds of Filgaia than anywhere near inns, markets and homes. Even her ethnicity is difficult to actually place. Wandering Filgaia as a Drifter, she brings with her an abiding faith in the Guardians of the land, and the ability to call upon a particular spirit to aid her. But while she has a certain rapport with the natural world and seems sometimes to understand the ways of beasts and monsters, she nevertheless goes through the world alone and with few close friends, and fewer still who understand who Catenna is and why she's chosen a path beneath a lonely moon.

Background

Powers and Abilities

  • Silver Moon Medium: Catenna was raised as a dedicated Zoa Priestess in the service of Celesdue, but found herself in possession of the Silver Moon Medium after discovering a lost temple in the depths of Elru. The Medium grants her a far stronger connection to the Moon Guardian than most and enables powerful Material summons and arcana.
  • Sea Medium: Granted to her in the depths of the Guardian Temple, this new Medium gives Catenna the ability to tap into the powers of Lucadia, Guardian of the Sea, though it is an ability she has barely begun to explore. While her life has been devoted to Celesdue, the inextricable bond between the Moon and the tide makes this a fairly natural fit.
  • Beast Bond: The Zortroa, long driven off their land by the Kingdom of Elesius, broadly did not follow the path of the Baskar in communing with the Guardians, but instead developed the ability to bond and in some cases even merge with wild monsters. That said, Catenna is notably worse at this than virtually any other Zortroa and has virtually no ability to command beasts outside of her familiar, whose bond with her is more spiritual and rooted in love and care than is typical of Zortroan beastmasters' bonds with their creatures.
    • Saarda-Shanta: Otherwise known as the Owlet, or the Great Owl. Saarda-Shanta is a Totem Creature of Celesdue and is at least partly an embodiment of Celesdue's essence. The child of a Totem Bird driven mad by The Demon King's Malice, the Owlet was hatched from an egg saved by the Caravan Kinship and raised from vulnerability, but has since come into her own as Catenna's familiar, companion and friend.
  • Swordsplay: Catenna's secondary weapon is a simple, curved-grip shortsword she discovered in an old armoury in the Sacred Grounds of Linga. Restored by a blacksmith and set with a moonstone in the hilt, it's a basic weapon but useful enough at close-range combat.

Relationships

Spritely.

  • Cyre H. Lorentz: "We both understand what it is like to feel like we cannot live up to what was expected of us... we both know how it feels to leave behind everything that we love. Even though he is so carefree, there is a nobility to him... and more than that, there is so much about is that is the same. Perhaps it was fate, that he should be the one that I love...."

Dependents

  • The Owlet: "I am sorry I could not save her mother. That failure weighs on my heart... and it leaves me with an obligation. This little bird is a Totem Beast of Celesdue, and I must do all that I can to ensure she grows up happy and serene, and meets her potential. But I wonder if I am ready for such a task, when I have always proven inferior to the other Zortroa at communing with beasts and monsters...."

  • Jacqueline Barber: "Jacqueline... no, Jay.... I am forever grateful to her for extending a hand to me when I was alone and full of doubt in a strange place... and I owe her a debt for saving my life when I had thrown it away in vain. Her heart is full of kindness, and she seems always to want to do what is right, even when it is hard for her. I could not ask for more in a friend."
  • Arleph Ardan: "In some ways he reminds me of Ethius with social skills. I am not sure why he does so. Perhaps it is that sense of... otherworldliness...?"
  • Carina Wynne: "She is an energetic one, but most clever in her own way. She seems to be a most worthy companion with a very unique skill, one I could certainly never master. I sometimes wonder if she is perhaps a little bit... too excited for her own good...."
  • Ethius Hesiod: "I feel I know so little about him. At times he seems a mute but reliable companion. And yet there are those flashes of madness, even a thirst for blood. What kind of man was he, that he is capable of such behaviour?"
  • Kourin: "She is perhaps more willing to learn than I gave her credit for. Kourin... I wonder how she is bearing the anxieties of returning to a world she seems to despise...?"
  • Lunata Croze: "A very kind young girl... that someone so giving should have to experience hardship saddens me. I can see that she is afraid of what Ge Ramtos wishes of her. If there is something I can do to ease her journey, then I must do it."
  • Lydia Seren: "Lydia... the things that were done to her are things that nobody should go through. For all her doubts and changes in mood, she has a good heart beating within her. I wish very much that I could simply scoop her up and fix all of her problems."
  • Matilda Whitehead: "There is a part of me that worries what she thinks of me for my knowledge of the Veruni... does she think I am a racist who hates them regardless of their actions? And yet, she is one of the most clever and well-studied young women I have ever met, and I would trust her with my life, even if we cannot agree on this one thing."
  • Shalune Amira: "I do not know her yet as well as I should. And yet... she seems to be quite a pleasant young woman, with skills I could never hope to match in mechanical matters. Her heart is kind. I like her."
  • Tesni Inoue: "She showed up out of the blue and has a strange ARM. Why ask why."

Friends and Acquaintances

  • Alisha Diphda: "It was a cucco, miss."
  • Avril Vent Fleur: "An interesting young woman with a rapport with the Guardians. Perhaps someone I should know better, for what manner of secrets she holds...."
  • Bart Fatima: "A competent enough man, though he seems to be one of those who lives for the apparent. That is fine. He handles himself well. I would travel with him again if need be."
  • Cecilia Adlehyde: "She is an interesting young woman, and seems curious about me for some reason. She seems to see things similarly to how I do."
  • Dean Stark: "He has an energy to him that I find very endearing."
  • Elena: "W-what is it about Granasian priestesses that seems to entice Cyre so?!"
  • Elhaym van Houten: "She seems like a nice young woman, and polite. Quiet, perhaps. But I appreciate quiet in people."
  • Fei Fong Wong: "I am not quite sure what to make of him, but he does seem to be taken with Ms. Van Houten. He certainly seems to have a nobility to him, which I appreciate."
  • Ida Everstead-Rey: "In truth I am not surprised that this poor woman has succumbed to Malevolence. The pain and anguish she carried with her... the power of them was palpable, even before the darkness. She is a good woman, and I hope that she can find it within herself to walk out of the shadows and return to who she was."
  • Josephine Lovelace: "She has a familiar; I do not. I would not tell her to her face how embarrassing it is for me to partner with her. Should I not be the one with the stronger and more obedient creature at my command, or am I just an inferior person...?"
  • Katyna Reidal: "An interesting Beastwoman from somewhere I do not know. She seems most curious but also quite pleasant in her ways. I like her."
  • Leon Albus: "He is a competent man and goes about his business effectively and without complaining. I can respect that, though less so his deficit of spiritual wisdom and blindness towards matters of faith and heritage. Perhaps he needs to learn."
  • Lily Keil: "She does not say much. Then again, neither do I. She is competent and clever, though. I would partner with her again, should the opportunity come up."
  • Maya Schrodinger: "Were it not for her, I would have died in the sunken city...."
  • Morgan Newkirk: "I always feel like he is undressing me with his eyes whenever I run into him, and not in the way Cyre plays at it. It is slightly unsettling, but otherwise he seems competent enough."
  • Noeline: "I wish I knew her more than I do, and perhaps it is an indictment of me that I do not know her so well as Riesenlied. She seems in some way to be more... untouchable, perhaps is the word...?"
  • Riesenlied: "Riesenlied... to think that a Metal Demon could be so loving a person, and so capable of going against the wishes of her fellows. If she can truly become compatible with this world, then I wish to help her find a way...."
  • Rosaline Calice: "There is a small part of me that worries that she is interested in Cyre... but to see that she has become a Hellion... could even someone so sweet and kind be consumed by that power...?"
  • Sephilia Lampbright: "One is sad to see her running free in the streets with her doll. But she seems kind enough, in that earnest manner that young people have."
  • Seraph Beast: "A helpful being with what appears to be a good heart. I should like to know her more. I feel a touch of kinship with her, in some ways."
  • Tethelle Cirdian: "She has an energy to her, and her story feels similar to why I came to Ignas. I like her and trust her, and I treasure the rare times when I find myself traveling with her."
  • Vin Barrett: "An interesting man... one who walks with the Guardians as well, I think. Baskar, perhaps. He seems... playful. But solid enough."
  • Virginia Maxwell: "...She seems almost more childlike than young Sephilia."

Ambivalent

  • Janus Cascade: "Just another mindless nihilist who places his short-term wealth over the continued existence of Filgaia. I do not care to know more of him."
  • Ryudo: "A horrible, unpleasant man who treats people poorly. While he may be an ally when the occasion arises, I find his attitude dismal and his contempt for my beliefs to be... sadly typical."
  • White Knight Leo: "To see part of this man's memories... he seems like a man with a very noble heart, who yet carries much pain and conflict with him. I could come to admire him, were his faith not so bent on conversion of the masses...."

F.O.E.

  • Ambrosius: "Perhaps there is more to him than I gave him credit for, though his ideal is anathema to this world.... If he plans to walk the path the other Veruni walk, then he is my foe, and that is all that matters."
  • Berserk: "A mindless brute who met the fate he deserved. I do not enjoy taking a life, but I am glad I could play a part in removing this one from among the living - and though I hesitate to pass such a harsh judgment, I do feel that nothing of value was lost in his demise. Good riddance."
  • K.K.: "How dare this creature do such terrible things to Cyre's village! How dare they attempt to despoil Filgaia itself with their disgusting dark magic?! If only I had the strength to do more to stand against this Knight...."
  • Kent Hauch: "He and his thugs seem more troublesome than most riff-raff. Perhaps I should have paid more attention...."
  • Seraph Edna: "Using my boyfriend as a chaise lounge is not safe for child."
  • Parbody: "She is unpleasant. The mask is unnerving."
  • Seraphita: "...Why is this rabbit trying to set me on fire, while also hugging me?"
  • Yarobeleedt: "It is easier to dislike this Metal Demon. I must guard against that tendency - that of basing my dislike on his appearance. But he shows none of the kindness and remorse that I have seen in Riesenlied and even some of the others. I have few qualms about going against him."
  • Zed: "Ugh!"

Sad Priestess in Snow

  • Kaguya: "She is my friend... that will remain true, even if she is also going to be my enemy. I just wish it did not have to be this way...."

Family

  • Riima: "All my life, she taunted and tortured me... is this truly what one should expect of one's older sister? She always seemed to loathe me worse than the others, and seemed to play the most mind games with me. I have met enemies who wish to kill me and enemies who hate what I stand for, but I have met nobody who seems to hate me like Riima does."
