Dias Flac is known across many parts of Filgaia as a master swordsman seeking challenges to conquer. He's willing to hire out his skills to appropriate causes, but he insists on working alone, claiming that others would get in his way. While he'll see a job through, too, he also rarely commits to a cause so much that he can't just walk away. His main goal is growing stronger, and he rejects opportunities to get closer to others; because of this, he can come across as cold and arrogant. However, he has a keen grasp of others' motivations and feelings, and he cares far more than he lets on--more than he himself realizes, even. It all stems from a certain tragedy several years ago... but he won't talk about that.

Background

Dias was born on August 5, 474 PC, and raised in the small country village of Arlia. He was born to a loving mother and father, who eventually also bore a daughter named Cecille. Dias lived a simple, honest, and relatively happy life; his best friend was Allen, the mayor's son from Salva, the next village over, and he was also very close to his sister Cecille and her best friend Rena, to the point where Dias and Rena saw each other as siblings too. He had an interest in the sword and was for most of his life a perfectly decent fighter, able to handle the minor problems of Arlia and occasionally Salva. He was considered a reliable and kind person; one of Rena's fondest memories of him is when he went out of his way to comfort her when she lost her father.

When he was twenty-three, that changed when he and his family went on a light excursion into the Sacred Forest, an ancient-growth woods at the back of Arlia, and encountered a couple of bandits hiding out there. Dias had run into them by accident and overestimated his ability to defeat them. He was viciously stabbed for his efforts. His parents went to his aid despite their total lack of combat experience and were cut down. Cecille wasn't cut down; instead, she was bludgeoned and kicked to death. Dias, rendered immobile by his injuries, watched all this happen, completely helpless to stop it, until at last the bandits had their fill and left them behind in search of a new hide-out. Of the four, he was the only survivor.

Dias barely survived this incident. The instant he was healed (in large part thanks to Rena's magic) and his family had been buried, he left Arlia without a word to anyone on a quest to grow stronger. He did grow stronger too, a meteoric rise that brought him fame across the Krosse continent--but by the time he was strong enough to track down the bandits who'd murdered his family and nearly murdered him, they'd already been taken out by another fighter who'd killed them for their bounty. Dias challenged that fighter and won, but found no satisfaction in it. To this day, he continues to wander wherever his feet take him in search of greater strength--and away from the ghosts of his family and his survivor's guilt.

But it's not quite the same now as it was at the start. Six years ago, his journeying eventually had him cross paths with his childhood friend Rena again, this time in the company of a strange young man named Claude. In Claude, Dias recognized a loneliness and a thirst for strength that mirrored his own--but also a desire to protect, and the willingness to do whatever it took to protect others. Dias fought him in the Lacour Tournament of Arms back then and found a certain satisfaction, deciding to entrust Rena's safety to him before resuming his directionless journeys. However, he never actually joined Rena or Claude, and so his heart has remained largely frozen. Dias has continued to fight enemies across Filgaia and increase his strength, all without getting involved in others.

That is, until he recently once again had a chance encounter with Rena and heard about the world's woes from her. Even that wasn't enough to move him into joining the fight; Dias considered all of that none of his business. However, Rena asked him earnestly to fight alongside her and help... and if there's anyone Dias just can't say no to, no matter how much he might grumble about it, it's his surviving "little sister."

Skills, Powers and Abilities

Dias practices his own unique swordfighting style that he developed himself, which meshes the Edarl sword style he learned as a young man with martial arts techniques he's picked up during his travels. Unfortunately, hewing to his personal style on top of his past trauma means he's bad at fighting alongside others. He can potentially accept support, but he's fully incapable of giving it himself. The best he can manage is not getting in someone else's way, which is the same he demands from others. Thankfully, he's more than strong enough to pull his own weight, even with an inability to play nice. (Rena has been getting him to fix this, though, if little by little.)

For all his focus on personal strength and growing stronger, when it comes to raw muscle, Dias is only somewhat above average. Where he shines is actually speed, both in movement and in getting in attacks before his enemy can attack him. This is reflected in his iaijutsu-esque sword style, where he attacks with his sword from sheathed state and the act of unsheathing gives a boost to its quickness.
