"There must always be a strong hand to guide towards a brighter future."

Colonel Cidney "Cid" Laplace is something of a contentious figure in Guild Galad's history, recently resurfaced: a high-ranking officer of the industrial nation's armed forces, Cid was an outspoken and passionate critic of Guild Galad's current regime in the aftermath of the Celesti Civil War, decrying corruption in the Houses and the exploitation of the Celesti territories. For her efforts, Cid and her contingent were given the prestigious honor of exploring the blasted wasteland of Elru to determine what had reduced it to such a state -- an effective exile or, more bluntly, death sentence. That exile came to an end in the aftermath of ARMS' sudden and inexplicable disappearance at the hands of the Sorcery Globe: with very little means to counteract Odessa's terrorist activities in their territories, the Master and the ruling Houses brought Cidney back from Elru to head up their efforts at driving the radicalized cells of revolutionaries out; the effectiveness of her efforts - bolstered by the strange and potent tools brought with her from her expedition in Elru - has seen her and her White Stripes Brigade put in charge of policing Guild Galad's extensive railway system across Aquvy, but has cast her return to Guild Galad in a most controversial light: many of the merchant Houses regarding her with suspicion and even fear, while the common people seem to view her as a conquering hero, protecting them from violence that the current regime has failed to do up until this point. Intellectual yet surprisingly grounded, Cid's charismatic force of personality and dedication has earned her a devoted following amongst her men and the citizens of Guild Galad -- and many see her as one of the few people in power they can rely on in these trying times.

Background

Heir of Guild Galad's House Laplace, Cidney was not born to this role, but rather adopted into it. Edwin and Rosalind Laplace discovered her during one of their travels through the disparate archipelago of Aquvy: a young woman dressed in tatters, speaking a strange language and surrounded by rubble long-since settled, with no memory of who she was, where she came from, or what had happened to her.

They took her into their home, adopted her, and even gave her a name.

Cidney Laplace.

The adoptive daughter of House Laplace soon became a regular presence in Guild Galad after her debut into society, swiftly enrolling into Guild Galad's armed forces and rising through their ranks, even given control of her very own squadron. She was the pride of the Merchant Houses.

That all changed the day her parents were killed at the height of the Celesti Civil War. One of many caught in the crosshairs of an explosive detonated on the train they had been traveling on at the time, believed to have been perpetrated by extremist elements in the Aquvy Union. A distraught and angry Cid disappeared from the Galadian spotlight, with a squadron of loyal troops. Popular rumor at the time was that she had embroiled herself in the war as an independent element to avenge her late parents, but nothing could be confirmed.

At the end of the civil war, Cidney returned to Guild Galad a changed woman. Seemingly disillusioned with Guild Galad's leadership, the new head of House Laplace soon became her own people's most outspoken critic, shining a light on the ongoing exploitation of the people of Guild Galad and Celesti both, the hypocrisy of their isolation from the rest of a world that could desperately use their support -- and the complacency and corruption rife within the Merchant Houses, and their rigged system of rule. Cidney had become a passionate firebrand, and was drawing a frustrated and aggrieved population to her side.

So Cidney "Cid" Laplace was given the good news that she was being promoted to Colonel and a new, very important assignment for her and her brigade: an expedition into the blasted lands of Elru, to investigate what happened to the ruined land. Reaching out to the rest of the world. Just like she had demanded.

Cid and her brigade spent five years in an exile meant to be a death sentence. Every day a struggle for survival in the unforgiving lands of Aquvy, they somehow survived -- and persevered, until necessity in the form of Odessa's destabilizing entrance on the world stage saw them brought back home to assist on the frontlines.

When Cidney returned, it was with weapons and technology far in advance of what even Guild Galad could field; she and her troops have become an integral part of the efforts to keep Guild Galad and its interests safe, and her efforts and tireless have seen her become celebrated by the citizenry.

The Master and the Merchant Houses hold her on a short leash, now. But the fear remains in them that the dog might do more than just bark, one day.
