  • Summary: A page from the journal of a dead woman, written ten years before the present day.

I had her hair, her build, her face. I would have had her eyes, the same color, the same size and shape, but years being married to him, following his rules, answering his every demand, have rendered them like emerald glass...more prone to reflect the image of someone or something else other than herself, because they were empty.

She was empty.

I remember bringing her flowers as a girl. I tried every color, every kind and configuration to make her smile. I wasn't much of an artist, but I loved everything fragrant and vibrant, and during her birthdays, I would present these clumsy creations to her in hopes that I would finally find what I was looking for. Oh, I received her smiles, her embraces and her kisses, but there was always something about them that was missing. It's only now that I realized, looking back in those moments (because I can't help but do so tonight) that these tokens were dead and rote. Beautiful, yes, because she was beautiful, but ultimately soulless.

I never got to know her. Maybe it had already been too late, the day I was born.

Maybe even before then.

I said goodbye to her after dinner, and while I suspect her heart had been gone for quite some time, her mind was still very much present. Perhaps it was the way I said it, or the way I looked, but I think she knew what I was about to do and that I never intended to return here alive.

Her eyes burned when I said the words. Until that moment, I had never seen them so full of life, however brief the glimpse of it was.

I knew then that I had her blessing.
