WEEKS AGO, IN KROSSE
The magus leans on his staff, staring down at the twisted form that lies below amidst the magic circle. It twitches feebly, jaws parting to loose a groaning croak of a cry. Where its flesh isn't rendered black by exposure to the sphere, shining white Symbols flicker along lengths of its body.
A hard light glimmers in Timotheus Lovelace's eyes.
Just as before.
Another failure.
It had at first seemed a windfall, a chance to wrest the Orb more fully under their control, when the soldiers had discovered a host of the creatures roaming over the boarders and into Krosse. Some had perished in the conflict but -- mercifully, or so it had seemed at the time -- not all. Some captain or another with her head on straight had sent the remaining lot to the capital.
Whereupon they had come under his control.
'Reapers', or so they were called -- largely mindless beings that seemed interested in nothing but devouring flesh. Here, he had thought, something without a mind and yet committed to a single purpose...
Through Symbology, he could make them into an array to control the Orb.
He turns from the sight, turns towards his single assistant in this procedure. "Dispose of it. I have no use for this wretch."
No, enough hieing after that which fails to bear fruit.
He gazes at his assistant, thoughtfully, reminded of his earlier consideration for the lad.
There are other avenues to attempt.
