  • Log: 2021-06-12 Something the Master Didn't Teach
  • Cast: Blue Master Lunn, Pearl
  • Where: Kilika Island
  • Date: June 12, 2021
  • Summary: Pearl sees an opportunity to take the power she has been granted, and finally revenge herself on her master, even if she dies in the process.

<Pose Tracker> Blue Master Lunn has posed.

The Guard are making their way out of Kilika.

Tensions between Hyland and Rolance have complicated this; they have left separately, and fights between pockets of soldiers have broken out. The result is a piecemeal, haphazard departure. It is overseen by Blue Master Lunn, largely because others have had things to tend to... and there are a few whispered concerns about Leo. Althena's Chosen seem to have lost some of their luster, some whisper.

It is later in the evening. Kilika is prone to rains -- and it is today. A softer rain, grey and miserable, falls on streets with rebuilt buildings... which are mostly empty. Lunn stands in one that is a mostly-emptied warehouse, its sides opened up. Once, it held provisions; those are now mostly en route to Glenwood and Meribus.

It is busy oftentimes... but not tonight. The rain has kept most away from this harborside warehouse.

And so the Blue Master is left alone, to think. But he is not the Blue Master, tonight. No, the rain and solitude allow him to be more honest. The mask comes down -- only for him to wear a painted red-and-black one, with a heavy shadowed hood.

He is not Lunn, tonight. He is the Master of the Shadow Dragon.

<Pose Tracker> Pearl has posed.

The second most promising disciple. The repeated failure. Just another student.

Whoever she is, Pearl stalks through the darkness as though it were part of her, her black uniform hiding her amongst the rain. She knew her Master was here. Here, in the fading heart of the Guard's territory in Spira. The place where her masters hated enemy stands prominent. She makes her way to the warehouse.

Outside, she feels her whole body shake. Fear. Primal fear. She worries that the companion of her soul will mock her, but they remain silent. Maybe they understand why she is shaking like a terrified child. She steadies herself.

Tonight was her chance. The chance she has waited for all her life. "...Are you ready?" She asks it to both herself and the other part of herself. She feels the surging waters. They are always ready.

Pearl steps through the doors. There is no hiding her steps, her movements. Not to the man who made her what she truly is. She makes several steps forward, looking at the figure in the darkness.

    "Master."

<Pose Tracker> Blue Master Lunn has posed.

Lunn has a way of not letting his disciples know, exactly, what he thinks. Fear is tempered with reward; the occasional idiosyncratic kindness can be more torturous than pure vitriol. Abuse is something he has forged, tempered, and reworked a thousand times.

When Pearl speaks, he straightens his back out. Whether he heard her or not is difficult to say; he likes to affect knowing what is happening, always being aware of what will happen. Still, he wasn't facing her when she entered...

He looks over his shoulder. The dim light reflects off the polished wood; it gleams, white and brilliant, and his eyes look at her from behind the mask.

"Pearl," he says. "What news do you bring?"

As ever, he assumes it must be about something.

<Pose Tracker> Pearl has posed.

It takes everything Pearl has not to flinch away from that gleam. She has not been face to face with her Master in some time. Alone with him even longer. Maybe she could have made a surprise attack but... it wasn't worth the risk. Not when she could get close another way.

"...As expected, the Guard have all but retreated. Additionally, Yevon have made no moves since the retreat of the Maesters. There is, if not stability, a lack of chaos. The remaining summoners seem to be continuing their pilgrimages."

She knows her report will tell the Master nothing her doesn't already know. But that's fine. That's not what she's here for.

"...Do you intend to exploit it, Master?" It takes courage to ask a question but... She has committed. "I realise the cult is here. I do not understand why."

It all depends on how this goes.

<Pose Tracker> Blue Master Lunn has posed.

"Of course. You should know well that the Shadow Dragon will use any and all situations... to our own benefit," Lunn says. His voice is deepened; he makes some effort to hide his voice through simple and practiced trickery.

"The Guard will soon withdraw entirely. There are things we must do, however. This war may end, but another will come," he says. He turns his head foward, looking ahead.

"I will have important tasks for you," he says. "We will capitalize upon strife with Rolance and Hyland... and it comes soon."

He nods, more to himself, as he looks out at the water. "And you will not fail me, Pearl."

<Pose Tracker> Pearl has posed.

"I see." Those ar Pearl's only words, before she nods. Gently, she thrusts a hand out to her side. The movement is strange, foreign to her but in the same way she knows it deep in her soul.

The movements of a dance. A sin in Althena's eyes, but neither of them really cares about sin, do they? The hand comes in. She starts to twirl. She can feel the raging waters surge in her soul, her companion ready to surge forth. The rain seems to intensify as she moves, a wet night becoming a heavy storm, at least at this warehouse. She raises her hands above her head, crossing at her wrists, and palms facing behind her. Pyreflies gather around her, prominent in an area with as much death as Kilika. She closes her eyes.

"We shall see if that comes to fruition."

She thrusts her hands out to her sides, and water ruises around her. The ground below her seems to become water she can stand on, and something rises forth. A sea serpent of brilliant breaches the waves, and encircles Pearl, almost protectively.

'Is this what I wanted? Protection? Not now..." She places a hand on the companion of her soul. They nod at her and she...

Smiles. Not the curel, monstrous smile Lunn had instilled in her. A genuine, small one. Only for a moment, but it's there.

The serpent places themselves between herself and Lunn. Pearl looks at the eyes of the mask. Anger. Hatred. Resentment. Fear. Resolve.

"Let us slay a monster, Leviathan."

Leviathan roars, and spheres of water surround Lunn, aiming to crash into him from all directions.

Her chance for revenge had come.

Lunn catches the movement. Without seeing, he somehow knows it's there. Maybe it was her tone of voice; maybe the man can sense movements in the air, like some disciples whisper. He turns...

...and his eyes behind his mask widen. Pearl has never seen him surprised, and he is today.

Raindrops shoot in from the open sides of the building -- swirl into the water rising around and encircing around Pearl. His eyes widen, and then he nods once. "You... you thought to turn to some other power to best me. I see that you have not realized..."

Water slams into him. Lunn rushes into it and it breaks around his body. His dark robes are sodden and battered. But he tears through, leaping up at the Aeon -- and then swings out a hand. He slams it at the Aeon, palm first.

And a shockwave of pure, hateful shade explodes off it.

"...when they ARE BROKEN!"

Leviathan tightens into a curl, and the Shadow Dragon Palm slams across tough scales. It hurts. By god it hurts, and Pearl can feel her Aeon trying to shake off the corrosive ki. She knows how the pain feels, though she never felt her Master's version ofthe strike directly. Only other students. Or Jean's.

Still, light flares in Leviathan's eyes. This is a fight. Their enemy is a warrior, and this is what Leviathan lives for. Combat against the strongest.

Defiance flares in Pearl's eyes too. She glares at the impassive mask. "You were the one who put this idea in my head." She states coldly. "You were the one who had me learn a second style, after all." There is a storm in her soul, and it is coming to a head. "You believe in your strength. You would never allow one of us to become strong enough to face you from your teachings."

She flings an arm forward, and Leviathan seems to know her plan instantly. They open their mouth, and swing out with their tail, aiming to slam it into Lunn and send him across the room. Leviathan has power too. A power not born from the darkness in her own soul.

"I will take the risk if it fails. But I will not pass up this opportunity provided me."

"I did... so that you may learn this lesson: no style is superior to the Shadow Dragon!"

Leviathan swings their tail out. It slams towards Lunn -- but then he is a blur, a shadowy movement that blinks and reappears in midair, already leaping. Lunn comes down, foot stretched out. Darkness ignites off it, as he descends and kicks hard into the Aeon.

His fist comes back then. A single bead of light grows from it -- strands of darkness shining out -- and he punches it hard at Leviathan, before it blows backward at the Aeon.

"I am curious... how you came across such a power!"

This is not unexpected. If it were as simple as that, her Master would be dead by now. Leviathan's tail slams into the wall of the warehouse, wiping out a chunk of the wall. The water seeps in. Pearl's head swivelos to track his movements. "There!"

The two of them are too slow, even as Leviathan tries to tighten their coil to defend themselves. The ki of the shadow dragon seeps into the companion of her soul, and she can see the pain. "Keep moving, Leviathan!"

The sea serpent moves with all the speed of the snake, and Lunn's Nadir Breaker goes wide, destroying the ground near Pearl's feet. She doesn't flinch. But she's shaking. Despite herself, she's shaking. She had sworn not to show it, but she couldn't.

"Then prove it. Now." She keeps it from seeping into her voice. Just.

Pearl curls her hand into a fist, and holds it in front of her face. In front of her, water starts to rise around Leviathan. "I was born with it, apparently. It simply required a trial. A trial of will, of strength. I passed." Leviathan's eyes glow blue, and a little of that creeps into Pearl's otherwise grey eyes, for a moment. Her Aeon is lending their strength. "This is the strength of my soul. Something even you couldn't crush."

She casts her hand in front of her.

    OVERDRIVE

"Leviathan!" The sea serpent roars, echoing off the walls, enough to be heard outside.

    TIDAL WAVE

A truye tidal wave rises from the waters around Leviathan, surging forward at Lunn, power and strength behind. No mercy. Just bthe full rage of the sea.

<Pose Tracker> Blue Master Lunn has posed.

The sea serpent is faster than Lunn expected. He pulls his hand back from the floor, shattered by his attack, and then she looks up -- staring at the Aeon. He sees their power, then, and he understands -- but he already knew.

Some things are greater than him.

The Aeon's name echoes, then the tidal wave crashes down. walls and ceiling are shorn away -- and Lunn is hurled backward. He smashes into a stone pillar that cracks under his weight and the water's weight. As the waters recede, he stumbles.

He grunts, straightening himself; then, he spits blood into the floor, and looks up at Leviathan. He spares a glance at Pearl. "We will see... for I am not done yet!"

He launches himself forward. There is no way but forward. He hurtles, fist swung backward.

And he closes the distance with the Aeon. He strikes, repeated;y; his hands and feet slamming at the Aeon. His each strike leaves shadowy ki, one after the other, infusing it.

Then he swings a knife hand back, and strikes.

Shadow erupts -- and then freezes. And the shadow all across Leviathan shatters, like glass, but also with an explosion of nocturnal power.

    And suddenly, there was hope.

Not because he was dead. But because she had made him hurt. Because he had stumbled. She had seen her Master falter for the first time ever. Perhaps she could manage this.

She tried to bite the feeling down, even as Leviathan let out a hoot of achievement in her soul. It would be too cruel to hope now and fail.

She sees the sequence of the Perfected Kata. She only knew it conceptually. She knew it existed. But she had never been taughted. "Leviathan! Get out of the way!"

The serpent is swift, but not that swift. For all the hits the giant serpent snakes out of the way of, it takes one. It hurts. The shadow building up, but not seeping in. Pearl is worried. And then as the knife hand connects, Leviathan lets out a roar of pain, and pyreflies fly off them as the darkness pierces scales of the Lord of the Waves. It saps her strength, and she tries not to falter. She was no Lady Yuna or Summoner Belize. She hadn't been trained. She wasn't a real summoner but...

But she couldn't give up now. Not with the yelling in her soul. She can feel them speaking to her, telling her they had him on the ropes. They just had to finish it.

"I know." She responds, quietly. He could have any techniques left in him now. Any surprises.

She places a hand on Leviathan, hoping to rely on their strength once more. The serpent rears back, and opens it mouth. What flies from it is a beam of pressurized water so fierce it could be confused for the laser from an advanced ARM. A piercing beam of death. Aimed straight at Lunn.

Lunn recoils backward.

The beam of pressurized water slams into the ground, kicking up shattered stone in a trail, as Lunn runs ahead of it. Then, he kicks off -- leaping up alongside the blast of water as it finishes. A stone flies ahead of him.

He reaches up to it, kicks off it with both feet, and then comes down straight at Leviathan. Eyes wide behind his mask, he swings back a fist. Darkness ignites across it, shadowy and rippling.

And he slams it forward, punching into the Aeon's neck. He tries to hurl them back from him with a loud, wordless cry.

He is not, yet, defeated -- but he is on the razor's edge, and seems to know it.

This is why she hadn't dared to hope.
The strike connects, and the sea serpent flies backwards. It's weight crashes through the front wall of Kilika's warehouse. She turns to look at Leviathan, pyreflies flying from their body. Concern. Fear. Worry. Feelings beaten out of her rush back. "Leviathan!" She shouts again, not an order, but a terrified gasp.r
And then she realises she is alone with her Master, and she has turned her back on him. She turns around, eyes on him. She's alone with him. Her energy is channeled into keeping Leviathan here. She can't move as freely as she would like. For a second, she is a scared child again. A little girl staring into the face of a monster.

And then she hears a roar in a soul. They didn't come here to fight with a weakling. They came to face the strongest. They came to fight. And they wouldn't allow her to give up and bow like this. Leviathan surges alongside her, and her resolve doubles.

'Is it right, to rely on them like this?' She wonders, even as she places her hand on their scales. But they were a part of her soul. Even if she felt terror into her bones, she would fight. She owed it to so many.

Wordlessly, she looks at Lunn. The two of them had to do this. And they had to survive this. She promised one more fight after this.

Leviathan seemed to feel her resolve, and let out a roar to the heavens. The gathering rain and surging waters form into a crown of spears around Leviathan's head. She points once more at Lunn, and Leviathan's nods and the spears of water drive towards Lunn from myriad angles, and there's so many of them.

It might not be enough. But she said she'd go down fighting.

<Pose Tracker> Blue Master Lunn has posed.

Spears of water fly in.

They stab into Lunn across his body -- and blood flows from puncture wounds, as the master is caught. His black robe is shredded; he cries out in pain, proving human...

...and when it ends, he collapses to his knees. Her breathes hard, a crack running up art of his mask. Lips spattered with blood can be seen.

"I... trained you well."

His voice is thick -- wounded, it would seem. "That you would learn their art... the thing they turn to for salvation," Lunn says. He looks up at her.

"You learned well, Pearl. Destroyer," he says. He smiles, bloodily. "You take a holy dragon... and give it shadow."

<Pose Tracker> Pearl has posed.

For a moment Pearl can only stare as the spears pierce their target. The cracks inthe mask show. He did it. She hurt him. She watches for a while to see if he could stand. If this was a trap. Ready for Leviathan to smite him. He doesn't move.

He speaks. The words feel like knives in her. "You made me into a weapon. A monster. Something fit only to kill for your whims." The words are her usual cold, toneless voice. She walks forward slightly. "And then I sought any power that would let me slay you. Anything." She steps forward further. "But I was still just for killing, just a different target."

She looks up at her Aeon, looking down on Lunn. "But Leviathan is still a being of salvation." She walks closer still. "You say I gave them shadow? They brought me light."

She removes her mask, throwing it to the side. She looks down at Lunn. "But until I deal with you, I'm still just a monster in the shadows." She kneels down, grasping the mask. "Now I want to see the face of the man who made me this way."

And in one swift movement, she pulls it away.

<Pose Tracker> Blue Master Lunn has posed.

"We'll see. All things darken in time. It's all we are," Lunn says, his breath still bloody and ragged. Moreso, even; his wounds are serious. He is not, it seems, invincible. He looks at the Aeon for a moment, and then back at Pearl.

Her mask clatters on the ground. And, after a moment, so does his. He is an old man -- in his fifties, with a familiar face. Lunn always looked severe but stalwart; a champion of the people, but distant.

But it's not hard to see those lines as unflinchingly cruel, too. There is a hard look on his face.

"Satisfied?" he says. "There aren't heroes. There are only the butchers and the lambs. You know which you are, don't you?"

<Pose Tracker> Pearl has posed.

She stares, wide eyed and in disbelief. How? Why?

And then all of a sudden, a dam breaks in Pearl. The anger she'd used as a tool comes pouring out. "YOU?" She lifts him off the ground, and slams Lunn into a wall. "You're the one.... you're the one who destroyed me? Destroyed all of us?" How were her two greatest enemies one and the same? How could that be? "You already had the power you needed, and then you killed so many of us to become a hero?"

There aren't heroes, he says. Maybe that was right. Was it all a facade? Were they all like this?

    Even the Commander?

She slams his head against the wall again, brutally. "Did you enjoy it? Letting us think there was someone who could defeat you, that's why you hid?" Another slam. The brutality was flowing through her. A voice inside her cautioned her to end it. But she couldn't. Not yet.

She growled, pressing her forearm across his throat. Limiting his air, but not completely cutting it off. She wanted him to suffer. She felt the Shadow Dragon Ki rising in her. Oh, she could make him hurt.r
"Why? What possible reason did you have? There are thousands of monsters in human skin in this world!" A tear rolled down her cheek. She didn't notice it, not yet, but there were more coming. They rolled down her cheek. "What justifies what you did to us?"

There's no answer that will satisfy her. And a being like Lunn is unlikely to provide one anyway. But she had to ask.

<Pose Tracker> Blue Master Lunn has posed.

"Gh!" Lunn grunts, as there is a loud crack when his head hits the wall. Blood runs from his split scalp, and his eyes look up at her. "Knowing I was stronger... kept you afraid. But thinking there was hope--it meant there was one more thing to take from you. One last way to be sure..."

His lips curl back into a snarl. "...that you knew there wouldn't be some miracle."

He shakes his head -- as best he can. His voice is a rasp, as her feels her forearm on his throat. His breathing is raspy. His words come as a half-hiss.

"Because violence and pain is the point," Lunn says. "Because suffering is something. This world is empty -- meaningless. Pain, suffering, and strength... that gives it meaning. I gave your lives meaning. And if you died..."

He spits again. "...nothing was lost. It wasn't about the power. Pain is strength."

He meets her with eyes that are losing focus. "And strength is all there is."

<Pose Tracker> Pearl has posed.

"You..." She knew it. She knew it all. Even as he has said it. It was for cruelty. To make them suffer. "You... contemptible bastard!" She yells. She draws her forearm back, like she's going to strike him again. But she stops. That's what he wants. He wants her to be like him.

And right now, it's the last thing she wants.

She stops. "You're wrong." She says, finally, looking him in the eye. "But there is no way to convince you otherwise. But I will not do this the way you want." She quells the shadow dragon ki inside her for now. She wants to drive the palm straight into his heart, and end him painfully. But there are other ways.

She's been so many other people. A stern guard. A kindly novice. A summoner.

She doesn't have to be him.

She draws a knife from her belt. It's more a tool than anything else. But it's sharp, and it has a point. Quietly, she slips it up between Lunn's ribs, towards the heart.

"I shall just live in a way that spites your thinking."

And then she drives the knife in, as instant and painless as she can manage.

<Pose Tracker> Blue Master Lunn has posed.

"We all are," Lunn manages back to Pearl. He looks up at her -- out of breath, bleeding, and unable to move. It's his final words -- the last thing he says to her. Half-resigned, half-defiant.

But there is a flicker of surprise as he realizes he won't be ended with the Shadow Dragon arts. It was the ending he expected -- that at some point, the monster would breed an even greater one. But, that isn't what happens. It is, instead, a simple knife in the dark; the sort of end that has come to dozens of nobles.

The sort of death that the Shadow Dragon denied others.

The blade sinks in. "Hrrk--" He sputters, and it's instant. Blood coughs up from his mouth and he spasms.

And then Lunn crumples over, his corpse hitting the floor in a heap. Her knife remains between his ribs then -- and his eyes stare lifelessly.

<Pose Tracker> Pearl has posed.

She looks down at the body, and cleans her knife with her shirt. She looks up to Leviathan, who seems to nod at her. "...Thank you." She pauses. "I will do as I promised too." The sea serpent gives her an affirimg slap on the back, before she begins the dance to send them away. As he dives into the sudden waters below, Pearl lets out a breath.

She walks over to the mask, pauses, and leaves it there. It was evidence. Evidence that could be useful. But Lunn's broken mask... that she takes. She wants to stop, and just stare into the darkness. But she can't.

Who should discover him? Another Shadow Dragon would come but... No. It's better the Guard find him. Spur them to face the Shadow Dragons, cause chaos for a while. That might be the better goal.

She looks at the sky. The rain's still heavy. She grabs a jar from the warehouse, some kind of flammable liquid, and poors it at the entrance. With the damage done it was going to collapse anyway. Then she lights a flint and tinder. The rain would stop it getting out of control, but it would still draw attention.

That done, she starts stalking away into the night. It would be best to be elsewhere.

    Far elsewhere.
