"I'm not going with you because I want to leave my village... I'm going because one day, I will come back here again."

A willful young woman from the small town of Arlia, Rena Lanford has a hands on approach to all things in life. She's grown up with something of an open secret within the Kingdom of Krosse, powerful symbological healing prowess that is considered impossible by anyone learned in the field, made all the more mysterious by her complete lack of tattoos. Years ago, she made the decision to leave her village and adopted Mother, Westa, with an eccentric young traveler she mistook as the legendary Hero of Light, to join him in investigating the Sorcery Globe. Her true hope, however, is that along the way she will find evidence of where she was born, so she might honor the Birth Mother whose love she carries with her to this day.

Background

Rena Lanford was found in the Sacred Forest near Arlia as a child, and was taken in by a young woman from the village named Westa. While everyone knew that Rena was adopted, Westa still found herself torn over the subject of the strange green crystal pendant that was found with her, the only evidence in her eyes that Rena wasn't hers. Given the small village life, Rena quickly bonded with Cecile Flac, a girl her own age from a different household, who became so close as friends they regarded each other as sisters. Naturally, Cecile's big brother Dias became something of a protector for the two young girls, and a big brother figure to Rena himself in time, but there was also Allen, the Mayor's son from another town who became a part of that friend's group.

While those days feel idyllic in retrospect for the happiness they shared, one cannot forever avoid the realities of Filgaia. First it came in the form of Westa falling ill, the young girl being told she'd be fine, in contrast to the whispers away from her of Westa's imminent demise. In a child's desperation, she unlocked her powers of Symbology, healing her mother of her illness. But for all that she gained from that incident, she was taught how powerless she was in short order. Her father was killed in a work accident, away from home. All the healing power in the world could not bring him back, and then Cecile's whole family while on an outing was killed by bandits, save for Dias. It was Rena who found him that day, on the verge of death, and saved his life. For the sister she'd loved, and for Cecile and Dias' parents she could do nothing.

After his recovery, Dias left the village, and it was soon after that Allen stopped visiting the village. In order to assuage her loneliness, Rena distracted herself from it, by teaching herself self defense in case the bandits returned, by attending the small town church dedicated to the legend of the Hero of Light, by learning to take care of the village children. How to cook, how to find herbs and compound them into small town remedies. She remade herself in this image of being a strong, reliable young woman in her hometown that was entrusted with any task, even to bring matters of the town before the King once the Mayor became too old for travel.

Reports of the Sorcery Globe causing troubles in distant Elru made her uneasy, but in the end, it took a far greater event for her to decide to leave her hometown. While taking a walk in the Sacred Forest, she came upon a young traveller named Claude C. Kenny. Distracted by his presence and worried he was a bandit, she was taken off-guard by a monster from behind. Now, if you ask her, what happened next is that Claude drew the legendary Sword of Light, and vanquished the monster in a radiant flash. Shocked by this event, she did what any young awestruck woman might do.

She ran the hell away- but then she came back, introduced herself, apologized, thanked him, and brought him into town to at least offer him lodging and a meal for saving her, he seemed lost! However, on the side she started informing her mother, informing the mayor what she had seen, that she'd found the hero of light. Bad news for her, Claude denied being the Hero of Light.

Distraught from the incident of the night before, she went to the Sacred Forest to clear her head, only for Allen - her childhood friend to show up from men and kidnap her because he had decided to marry her!? And would not take no for an answer? Well Rena got dragged back to Salva, and was shut away in Allen's home, forcing her to find a secret passage to escape into the mines - unfortunately the mines was where Allen had constructed his elaborate marriage chapel!? Complete with an altar and shackles?

Let's just say that he brought new meaning to the idea of forced marriage. Thankfully at the last moment, Claude burst in and untied her, and- Allen produced an energy stone, which turned him into a monster. Claude and Rena fought him, and managed to overcome him, destroying the stone and bringing him to his senses.

In response to the incident, the Mayor of Arlia asked Claude to investigate the Sorcery Globe which seemed likely to have brought these troubles. Claude agreed, and much to everyone's surprise - Rena asked to go with him too. The reason, as she stated was because she didn't know where she had came from, but she knew that she carried her Birth Mother's love with her as evidenced by her pendant. She wanted to discover the truth of that love with herself so that she could return to Arlia with her questions answered, and her feelings satisfied.

Six years then passed and-

Well a lot of things happened!

Claude and her managed to recruit Dias to their cause. They found the Sorcery Globe, the Ten Wise Men returned, Claude was mortally wounded and she brought him back. She got told she was a 'Nedian' - and then got transported with them to Energy Nede, where she's begun to learn more about the world of her birth. While she still has no answers on her mother, she feels like she now has a chance of discovering them. Unfortunately answers will have to wait, because the Ten Wise Men have taken over the fortress of Phynal, and Nede needs saving, for which their party has committed to undertaking trials to show their ability to tackle this problem. Until then she's rediscovering her culture through Pokemon training, and the battling culture of Nede.

Gotta catch 'em all!

Skills, Powers and Abilities

  • Symbology - Rena is a highly skilled Symbologist, able to perform feats of healing that can even reconstruct a person's body on the verge of death. It has limitations, she's less able to perform healing on someone whose anatomy she has a harder time conceptualizing, and cannot clear out poisons or diseases that are complex and beyond her knowledge. She's also prodigiously skilled in Offensive Symbology, utilizing spells of the Earth and Light elements primarily, but also water to a much lesser degree.
  • Martial Artist - Rena is a self-taught martial artist who primarily utilizes punches and kicks in a fight, but also grappling moves. This can often catch Filgaian opponents off guard, because Symbologists generally fight as classic mages. While Rena doesn't have any truly specialized 'Strike Artes' so to speak, she's good at weaving in her spells around this close quarters combat which tends to make up for her lack of formal martial combat training.
  • Skills - Among Rena's many other skills, she's a great home cook, and a decent musician who plays the Lyre. She's also got 'pretty good' survival and foraging skills, and the ability to deputize animals into going shopping for her as her familiar. Right now she's dabbling in Replication, for which she uses a RIRICA ARM to assist in 3D printing items.
  • Nedian Empathy - While most active on Energy Nede, Rena has a low key sense of 'Nedian Empathy' which allows her to easily connect with animals and even more easily with Pokemon. After making contact with Lady Brightwing, Rena's empathy has developed further, now able to get her thoughts across to other Pokemon and understand them in return. Otherwise, it sometimes functions as an instinctual sense of 'location' or 'what she should be doing' while on Energy Nede.

Pokemon
Name Type Nature The Squad
Ashound Normal_Fire Timid 'Shorty'. Rena's first Pokemon, whom she rescued from James who is bullying him. He's rather small for an Ashound and can be a little timid but is able to overcome this with encouragement.
Jabberwabbit Normal Naughty 'Nibbles'. This stocky Walrus Bunny Pokemon wears boxing gloves and trunks and is very rarely seen as cute by anyone other than Rena. Ultraviolent, has sworn vengeance on Loren Voss.
Whelpwisher Fairy_Fighting Impish. 'Buttons'. Impish. Shockingly durable and a defender of children. One day got into a misunderstanding with Claude and got into a slapfight with him for two hours. It's fine, it's definitely fine.
Dunsparce Normal Lonely 'Nacho'. Lax. This chill Dunsparce enjoys spa days with Rena. It came along on her journey after Rena proved herself by saving Nacho from Team Rocket.
Psynard Psychic_Flying Brave 'Lady Brightwing'. This resolute Pokemon joined the party on their journey to defeat the Ten Wise Men, out of a desire to create a better world for her children. One of the few Wild Psynards left, her acceptance of the party without being 'caught' or defeated in a battle is considered an unusual event for Energy Nede's Pokemon Battle based culture. Definitely not named after one of Grace's favorite gacha game characters that she's saved up to hard pity for.
Psynymph Psychic Hasty 'Gabby'. She is the chattier of the two Psynymph children of Lady Brightwing, curious and quick to get into trouble. Her Mama is very protective of her, but trusts Rena to 'babysit' as Gabby's trainer.
Clefairy Fairy Jolly 'Pippi'. This Pokemon was dancing atop Mount Moon when Cinne attacked. In the aftermath, she joined Rena, not simply wanting to be protected. Watch out for her Metronome attack!
