PRE-ENCOUNTER SUMMARY:	2017/05/09: I made contact with demihuman MORGAN NEWKIRK in order to organize a drifter group for investigation of the ruin site "Leck Mines," as per Captain Yugh's initative. I presented myself to NEWKIRK as a student of geology from Meria Boule whose primary interest was obtaining scientific information and rock samples.
ENCOUNTER SUMMARY:	2017/05/09:NEWKIRK was unusually well educated in basic theories of geological formation. I was able to build a rapport by empathizing with his social and cultural challenges as a demihuman. NEWKIRK claims to have been the former "Battling Champion" of Kislev's prisoner management program. I don't know if this is credible, but he did seem familiar with principles of Gear operation beyond basics that might have been gained from observation or hearsay. He has also claimed to investigate the "Batical Grotto" site, and he accurately described the apparition we encountered. This may also not be credible, although he claimed that his expedition group experienced casualties; it is possible that some of the remains we discovered represented Drifters who were able to reach the entrance before succumbing to their wounds, or whose remains were relocated by "That Entity." If NEWKIRK was the Kislev Battling Champion as he claims, he might have sufficient mental and physical fortitude to survive and escape despite his disadvantages. It would only require one Drifter to successfully escape to present accurate information to the "Adventurer's Guild." If so, they did not encounter the individuals we recovered. Anticipated time of departure is Wednesday. A full report will follow. 2017/05/11: NEWKIRK has been documented previously, but possesses an ARM that combines an energy-projection device with what appears to be a force-plane shield capable of repelling physical force. It is unclear if this would be effective against etheric attacks. He claimed that he recovered it from "lizard men," but I was unable to press him successfully for more information.
