Life is trouble. Only death is not. To be alive is to unfasten your belt and look for a fight. -- Nikos Kazantzakis

Like many drifters Noah Hawthorne appears to have a past that dwindles into inexistence if one traces his name back far enough. Is it probable that 'Noah Hawthorne' isn't his name? Sure. Does it really matter, though..? Arguably not. Drifters exist to fill a need, and when it comes to chasing obscure lore in the pursuit of ancient mysteries few do it better -- or with greater style, he would argue -- than Noah. Underneath that rakish facade, if one can look past his predilection for causing mayhem at every available opportunity they'll find that there exists a razor-sharp wit and a shockingly intellectual disposition, wrapped around the soul of an academic. Granted, it's very difficult to look past the troublemaking, if only because it's so god-damned difficult to see through chain explosions and angry mobs.

He isn't the type to go looking for violent trouble, but rumor has it he's better with that pair of gunblades he wears than his wisecracking, take-nothing-seriously attitude might imply. Good enough, maybe, to suggest there are more interesting things in his past than broken hearts and burning buildings.

Background

More mystery than history, if anyone bothers to try looking -- and why would they? Like most of his ilk Noah seems to have come into sudden and fully-formed existence no more than two or three years ago. Determined hunting may turn up an alias or two, rumors of exploits and towns where his name appears on a blacklist of persona non grata as a result of some wild or difficult-to-believe incident, but Filgaia is wide and scoundrels many: rooting around in his past is a supremely unrewarding activity.

A Very Particular Set of Skills

  • ARMs Duelist: He carries a pair, one on each hip, and they do several different things, none of them very nice. He claims that most of the people who've seen them in use are dead -- a convenient story, if a man were setting out to build a legend around himself. It is verifiably true, though, that he isn't quick to draw them.
  • Well-Educated: In spite of his penchant for causing a ruckus wherever he goes and a palate that appreciates the taste of mischief and mayhem, Noah is a veritable font of information, most notably in the areas of history and culture. In the right company and for the right reasons, he can expound at length about even the most esoteric of subjects, shockingly academic when the mood strikes. Related to this...
  • Relic-Savvy: ...he has a remarkable, extensive knowledge of ancient artifacts, relics, and ARMs, as one might expect from a man who makes a living by trading on that very same quality. He has no interest in setting up shop or embracing anything even remotely like a respectable job, but if he ever abandoned his reckless lifestyle he could probably make a fine living doing appraisals and fencing other people's finds. There are few complex machines he's incapable of fixing, given the proper resources and enough time.
  • Well-Traveled: He seems to have been everywhere worth visiting and most places that aren't, and brought back with him stories enough to keep him in free drinks at saloons the world over.
  • Polyglot: Languages. Lots of them. All of them, very possibly. His own accent is difficult to place, less the product of one region than a hybrid of countless places, his speech indelibly stained by what has presumably been a lifetime of travel.
  • Sleight-of-Hand: Mandatory know-how for any scoundrel worth their salt.
  • Horsemanship: Life on the road requires a good horse if a man wants to avoid sore feet. Noah's developed a hell of a seat for the saddle, and he's as comfortable in combat from the back of a horse as he is on his own two feet.
  • Bottomless Charisma: He's got a silver tongue and the tendency to lay the charm on thick. Some love it, some loathe it, but nobody can deny that he's got
  • Adrenaline Junkie: Any moment spent doing anything other than squeezing every last drop of excitement out of the life he's living is one he considers wasted.
  • Womanizing: He does it. A lot. He tends not to stick around after the fact.
  • Friends in Low Places: Well...not all of them are in low places, to be fair, but Noah knows people -- lots of people. He's been places, seen and done things. Some of the faces he's run into have been worth keeping around, even to a man with a deep-seated dislike of commitment.

The Search for Fact, Not Truth

  • There's a longstanding rumor in Aveh that Noah Hawthorne is linked in some way to the character at the center of a dreadful series of books -- Jack Dove. They're horribly written things, borderline bodice-rippers, and so of course they sell like mad. Then again, recent rumor says that the character is based on one Vin Barrett, whose face lately graces the lurid covers. Who can say which is true?
  • It wasn't more than a day after Noah arrived in eastern Ignas before the Mamma Mia riverboat casino sank straight to the bottom of a canyon river.
  • He appears to have taken up traveling with a ferret. He never wanted a ferret, but he doesn't seem to have the heart to get rid of it after it was foisted on him -- on his face, specifically -- by a blonde in a tragic dress.
