It is a marvel, how one decision can change so much for a person. It seemed small at the time, merely a matter of curiosity - step into the halls of Uzda Il-jam, study them, and then leave to go on to another ancient structure.

Ambrosius did not realize this until he left the shores of Uzda Il-jam and arrived back in Pendrago. He could not realize it. He could not prepare himself.

He was a man, he claimed, who touted reason and logic above all else. He put no stock in talk of spirits, and spiritual being. Even ghosts, he claimed, were a ridiculous theory. He was a man of science, after all.

But that day, that choice, that structure. It changed everything.

When he stepped off of the boat onto the docks of Pendrago, it was with opened eyes. He saw everything, everything he had shut himself off to before.

Purple wisps slowly streaming off of the world, carrying with them emotions pent up and locked away.

Things that lurked unseen out of the corner of the common folk's eye, visible only to those who had been touched by a world beyond common perception.

They were all there - present and frighteningly real. Surely he must've found himself different than where he had expected to land - surely this could not be Pendrago.

"I-I don't...I don't understand. What is this...? Where am I...?" Ambrosius muttered, shaking his head and staggering forward.

The boy with earnest eyes. The determined young woman. The archaeologist, eager to explore. Were they experiencing this, as well? Or was this a hell formed solely for him?

He did not understand.

He could not understand.

Nearby, a shadow began to loom over him. A beast in human form. Not like the beastmen he was used to - a hulking, wolf-like thing, rippling with unnatural muscle and claws that could tear a man to pieces.

A claw reached out toward him...and Ambrosius reacted instinctively. The beast's arm was grasped, and the creature found itself hurled, smashing through a wall. Around him, he heard frightened gasps and shrieks of surprise.

They were all staring at him. Ambrosius looked around. They had all seen him - the townsfolk stare, some of them backing away. There was some shouting - some rush over to where the beast had been thrown.

Did not they not realize what it was? It could kill them instantaneously, if it wished.

He did not understand.

He could not understand.

What he could understand, however, was the clanking of armor. Men with spears bearing the emblem of Rolance moved toward him, shouting words that fail to pierce the fog of his confusion, sounding distant and indistinct to his ears.

Tensions were on the rise after the attempted assassination of the Emperor, still fresh in everyone's mind though the worst had been averted. It was only natural that they would react.

It lasted less than a minute. Around Ambrosius's feet lay the unconscious forms of armored men, spears rent. People began to panic now.

"I...I-I must go. I must think..." Ambrosius muttered to himself, shutting his eyes tight. He moved quickly, not stopping for anyone or anything that barred his way.

He could not process this here...

...But the world outside Pendrago's walls would not bring him the comfort he sought.
