The island that the Omega Ruins are on is treacherous, with steep mountain
paths and spire-like peaks that rise up throughout. Winding your way through
them is no easy feat, though by now -- for experienced Drifters, such as
yourselves -- this is manageable. At the end of the path, though, you find
an immense stone doorway. It is covered in Yevonite glyphs and runes.

These runes all glow lightly. Sorcery placed into them is meant to keep you
out -- or, perhaps, keep whatever is inside sealed away.

As you study the doorway, you begin to suspect the latter. You realize that
it's not that you lack a key, but that no key for this door was ever made.
  It was not intended to be opened again. The sorceries sealing it are strong;
you will need to break your way through.

Once through, the Omega Ruins await: a labyrinth of winding paths in blue
  and violet stone, with pyreflies heavy in the air. Portions are cavern-like;
others seem like worked stone. The two fuse together in places.

<Pose Tracker> Venetia Vuong has posed.

"You know, even though this is a treacherous island, at least we're on a different planet this time," reflects VENETIA VUONG on their way up the path. And soon enough that path leads them to an immense doorway.

Towering and enormous, warded with runes. More of a plug that might in theory be useful as an access point if repair was needed.

Venetia exhales.

"Doors," she says. "They've so often been sealed. I've wondered sometimes why people don't design these things with more of a failsafe," Venetia states, "because by heaven they seem to make it damn hard on the people of the future to get at the contents! But perhaps that's the idea. A TEST."

"As if the entire cosmos was simply a curriculum," Venetia says, with dire portent.

"Well, unfortunately for whoever built this heap, I am a *graduate*," Venetia concludes. She draws out a Crest Graph and then -- fusses with it. She fusses with her position. It's a very pretty Crest Graph; unlike the vaguely technical outlines on the other ones, this seems to actually hold an evocative image, almost reminicent of the more heavily embellished sort of playing card.

There is time for Juni and Avril to make their preparations. Ashley and Juni may have some inkling that this is probably some kind of blasting thing or other, although Venetia steps rather close to the door, before nodding once and hoisting the Crest Graph aloft. "Haaahhhh--"

And something RISES out of her back; an enormous purplish sort of shadow, easily half her height again and with metal-clad fists. The figure seems to step through Venetia, regarding the stone before it, and then swings its right fist forwards into a single brutal mountain-rocking thrust punch!

Then it disappears.

DG: Venetia Vuong has used her Tool Simulacrum Sign toward her party's challenge, Ancient Sealed Door. Fanfare!
<Pose Tracker> Juni Vandrer has posed.

For the first time in some while, Juni was on site and actually able to make it along to help the others. That means she's kitted up. Dark grey, mottled overcoat. Hood, armor and rifle. Pack on her back, secured down. Ammo, charge and fuel checked. She's made her way ahead of the rest, probably without a word just out of habit.

With that said, she's checking out the door, muttering to herself when the others catch up.

An ear perks up at Venetia mentioning being on a new planet, getting a surprised reaction briefly before remembering... well they kinda are. "This is the kind of thing some planets would stencil warnings on. Or warnings like 'This place is not a place of honor. No highly esteemed deed is commemorated here. Nothing valued is here.'"

She shrugs and pops out the everpresent blowtorch. "I didn't get any readings approaching that kind of risk so enough explosives or some time and dedication to breaking and entering and we're all set though." As an aside she hooks a thumb towards the door as she faces the new arrivals, "Tried to find a way to uh, plug in and override. No such luck."

She backs away from Venetia's assault on it, hands up briefly with a laugh. She checks the impact for damage. Then begins to try and create further damage with the plasma cutter. Giving just a brief warning before she sparks it, "Don't look at the light. Feels like sandpaper the next morning even if you don't go blind." as her goggles automatically darken before you know, she gets to work.

As an aside, she gestures at the door, "When I'm done can you try again?"

DG: Juni Vandrer has used her Tool Plasma Cutter toward her party's challenge, Ancient Sealed Door. Rally!
<Pose Tracker> Ashley Winchester has posed.

Doors are the same no matter which planet you're on. They're always a pain! And worse still is that they are so often welcomed into homes, asked to serve as protectors for valuables, children, the infirm and everything in between! They are TRUSTED to protect their hosts in the dead of night against sneakthiefs and bloody murderers alike. None but the Drifter knows their true nature, the insidiously august spirit which animates and underlies all that they do.

Doors... doors...! The foe of all who Drift!!

But this one needs to be bypassed. NEEDS to be. If it's not, what's on the other side will surely not allow it to stand for long. "Aren't graduate classes way harder than normal classes, though...?" Ashley strokes his chin as Venetia unleashes her magic--

But this time, no gem nor kaboom issues forth, but some manner of voidwalking colossus...!!

"Oh, uh," he says, carefully. "I don't have anything like that. Nothing that isn't a last resort kind of thing, anyway." He could always Blaze the door away, but--

Well. There are obvious downsides. And long term, that's just not the kind of thing you break out That Power for, you know? To wield it so frivolously is... unwise.

But it may be necessary, here.

"...I can probably jury-rig some explosives though..." Ashley begins... tinkering. He's no Brad, but out of an incendiary canister, a small charge of gunpowder, and a large bag of flour, he can whip up quite an improvised explosive indeed. Just, uh.

It... probably won't be able to do much against a door like this one.

DG: Ashley Winchester has contributed a Brute Basic Action toward his party's challenge, Ancient Sealed Door.
<Pose Tracker> Avril Vent Fleur has posed.

"Perhaps it was not meant to hold forever," Avril remarks, trailing not long behind Venetia.

It had been safer, perhaps, to return to Lunar after the events in Meria. Whatever Yue's mother's designs, there was no telling whether the ships might return, and what then? No, better to travel to Lunar, where there was still much work for them all, besides.

She had promised, after all, to ensure that Xenobia's plan was put to an end. And Avril will forever despise breaking a promise.

But yes, doors. She has seen things open at her touch where they would not budge for another. Perhaps it was always meant to happen. When the stars are right -- when the eras meet their correct alignment --

Or because they've all gone and battered down the door, first of all.

"Those who are capable of breaching the seal are the ones who are best able to end what they could not," Avril speaks, glancing from Venetia as she summons a shadowmonster, at Juni as she makes her own attempts at the door, and over at Ashley as he begins to toy with some explosives.

"Here, then, is my own answer. Now!"

One brings shadow, as it is said, and Avril brings light. From Absolute Zero's hilt leaps forth a tangling beam of plasma, which she lances at the barred portal before them.

DG: Avril Vent Fleur has used her Tool Absolute Zero - Beam Whip toward her party's challenge, Ancient Sealed Door.
Stalwart! Party shielded from some Exhaustion this round!

DG: The party led by Venetia Vuong has passed this challenge! The party gained 20 exploration! If anyone needs to use
party management commands, do so now. Otherwise, the next round's GM may begin the next round with +dungeon/draw.
<Pose Tracker> Venetia Vuong has posed.

"I've seen many things in my time, Miss Vandrer," Venetia tells Juni, "but the day that I encounter an ancient ruin that has a big sign up front saying, I feel bad about myself, come give me a hug and a bucking-up talk, is the day I'm going to go home and grow mushrooms."

"Graduation is a state of mind!" Venetia tells Ashley as she calls up that strange spectre again to hammer the explosives into place!

Soon enough, though, between the brutalization of this strange shadow's fists -- which seem PLENTY PALPABLE, you can see the indentations -- and the disruption to the wards and guards caused by Ashley's rustlin' up some down home explodin's and droppin' some gerund's, the door is weakened. Any guardian spell is not there with sufficient force to protect against the incoming plasma drills, and soon enough they have carved quite a serviceable sub-entrance.

"Do you like this one?" Venetia asks Ashley, holding up the card. "It summons the image of your soul, apparently. You can use it to blast through things. It was something of a quirk before I reforged it with the meta-thallium."

DG: Avril Vent Fleur has drawn a new Challenge.

You enter a massive, cavernous room, on a ledge that stands over a huge pit
of water. There is a glyph on the floor ahead of you, glowing softly. And,
scattered throughout the cavern are pillars reaching out of the water. Each
has /another/ glyph on it. The glyphs all have stylized arrows, which
sometimes point you towards a pillar -- and another glyph -- but you can
change the direction with a thought.

You need to choose the direction, then use the glyph to teleport yourself to
the next pillar. But, if you pick the wrong direction, you will be dropped
into the water... and have to swim back, to restart the whole thing again.

<Pose Tracker> Avril Vent Fleur has posed.

    The portal crumbles, effectively.

"Shall we?" Avril asks of the others before they make their descent. "...Speaking of, I have been meaning to ask. I understand that you are a student or... graduate, as you say? What is it like to 'go to a school'?" Avril asks of Venetia, perhaps now getting her alone enough to ask the question that has surely been buring in her mind for...

    ...several years now, frankly.

Being an amnesiac doesn't help, and truth be told, her former self had probably received a series of private tutors. Schooling as it is generally understood in Filgaia isn't often done for heirs to the throne... most of the time.
    Certain princesses excepted.

They descend not all that far before the passageway widens into a large chamber. Here there is water: it is as dark as the night sky and promises the same depth. Attempting to dive is not recommended. There is no single path that crosses the abyss. Instead there are a series of pillars, topped by glyphs. Each, when stepped on, will send a soul flying in a particular direction, and whether that takes them to the safety of a pillar or the icy expanse below is a matter of mindfulness and planning.

Avril holds now in her hand a mirror as she approaches the glyph that awaits them atop this ledge. Streams of moonlight rise up softly from the glass as she gazes into its own depths.

"Perhaps... if I should try..." she murmurs aloud, stepping on the glyph. Will what she sees in the glass see her the rest of the way? Or will she be misled by moonlight?

DG: Avril Vent Fleur has used her Tool Mirror of De Soto toward her party's challenge, Glyph Teleporter. Cleanse! All
negative effects will be cleared at the end of the round!
<Pose Tracker> Juni Vandrer has posed.

There's a shrug from the diminutive alien, "Hey, those warnings are good ones. The suits are sticky and gross feeling." Not that she elaborates. "Honestly a sign like that would make me assume they've set up landmines though."

Out of the corner of her eyes she gestures towards Ashley, "Remind me later and I'll share some aluminium shavings and other goodies to make that trick work better." Which.. she's been seen throwing tin can flashbangs often enough. Probably checks out.

She lifts her goggles as the torch is flicked off. Shaking it a few times for whatever reason and pockets it again. "Never leave home without a master key or two." Stepping back from the newly made hole. Letting it cool off.

Avril's comment gets something of a nod, "Well, suited to causing problems. For us or them."

Back to Venetia, "I don't think I'd have guessed your soul was big, purple and punchy." She finds it amusing enough though. "Think it's got a counterpart in the world here?"

The question from Avril gets a sidelong look, mostly of concern. It's fine for now though!

Instead, for now she slips her wrist computer's cover open and taps away at it when she spots the lights on the pillars and the uh, strange method of keeping them out. "Huh. I've done kinetic entry that makes me less nervous than freefall like this does." Still, she's talking while letting her AI do most of the hard work. The fact that the lights can shift give some.. worrying variables though. "I'll uh, go first. I should be able to catch myself if I mess up." If she's not beaten to it. Or stopped.

You know, at about the same time as Avril herself does. Nothing, but for the trying though!

DG: Juni Vandrer has used her Tool AR Goggles toward her party's challenge, Glyph Teleporter. Enlighten! Party Wits
boosted!
<Pose Tracker> Ashley Winchester has posed.

"Sure!" Ashley nods Juni-ward. "I usually have enough actual explosives on hand, but uh. Usually those are the kind I shoot at things, and I didn't think we wanted to risk napalm backsplash or anything like that, ahaha~"

"Oh! That's actually pretty neat! Though I never imagined your soul-image would look quite like that, miss Venetia. I was imagining something more... elegant?" Beat. "Oh! But that was really cool, too!! Though uh," he scratches timidly at the nape of his neck, "...Probably not a good idea for me to touch it. I don't want to think what my soul looks like right now."

(It's not great. Everyone who can sense ANYTHING knows that it does not look at all great.)

But the door goes down! Avril has academic questions! "I'm interested in hearing, too. The closest I've been to a place of higher learning was when Lilka took me shopping is Sielje." Which on reflection MAY HAVE BEEN something of a date. Sorry Lilka. Ashley is SUPER taken.

Also: Pillars! Teleporter pillars. Ashley frowns, before pulling a certain helpful little box out of his pack. "Hold on, a place like this... I know we're technically in a rush, but places like these are usually packed with helpful loot. Like the people who built 'em had reason to think that adventurers who made their way inside would need a little extra help. So..."

He pushes a button! The Booty Call goes PING!! "Looks like there's some treasure over there...? Maybe we should make a pit-stop first?"

DG: Ashley Winchester has used his Tool Booty Call toward his party's challenge, Glyph Teleporter. Fanfare!
<Pose Tracker> Venetia Vuong has posed.

Venetia trundles forwards, and Avril asks her a question that visibly astonishes her. "Oh -- Dinoginos, I had thought; er, well, I suppose I can give you an answer. It's like..."

"Hm," Venetia says. "If you've ever been in a monastery, or a military, or seen the watches upon a ship... it is a bit like that, but freer, intrinsically. It is a time when you grow into your true self, however that may take. Many come to the School seeking only to earn better pay, and they do get that (generally speaking, no refunds)... but they also grow as people, if they are initiated in the ways of our sorcery."

"It's really a lot of fun," Venetia tells Avril, before they are confrunted with:

A TELEPORTER PUZZLE.

Venetia raises up her camera and takes a shot. Then she steps far to the side and takes another one. "Are you surprised?" she asks Juni, before grinning wordlesly to Ashley. "My soul is enormous, as befits my role on Filgaia. Up here, I'm just glad to assist, ultimately." After this, Venetia pauses to consider her route before packing everything up.

Will she get wet - possibly soaked?

DG: Venetia Vuong has used her Tool Blessed Hendricks Camera toward her party's challenge, Glyph Teleporter. Enlighten!

<Pose Tracker> Avril Vent Fleur has posed.

Speaking of sensing 'anything', Avril's gaze shifts ever-so-slightly towards Ashley. Slowly, she takes a careful breath, then exhales just as carefully. This isn't the first and it certainly won't be the last time that they've crossed paths -- or that she's felt like some part of herself is screaming in fury at Ashley's very aura -- she has managed control thus far.

    Today, she manages it again.

If she tries to keep a good six feet from Ashley as much as is possible, surely no one will notice.

But, schooling! Schooling, always a good distraction.

"I have visited the Nisan Cathedral, and I have seen soldiers at practice. So, 'schooling' is much like those places..." Avril furrows her brow, apparently in thought. "I see. I am glad that you survived," she tells Venetia, soberly. But Venetia said it was freer and more fun--?

The introduction of the pillar puzzle ahead may table that discussion for the moment. Guided but by her mirror (and moonlight?) Avril picks her way across the pillars, arriving at last at some further point within. She is followed close on her tail by Juni, who might be better able to puzzle out what Avril manages by sheer intuition.

Between the two of them, Venetia and Ashley manage their own way across (guided by the camera images) and even... find a treasure chest on their way over?

    (It's SPHERES.)

DG: Juni Vandrer has drawn a new Challenge.

You make your way through a curving, twisting cavern hallway that opens up

whole place is lit in that strange blue-purple light that dominates the look
of the Omega Ruins. The hallway here has carved statues of warrior-monks
from the past, but their features are smoothed and worn away. Weathered, but

<Pose Tracker> Juni Vandrer has posed.

Landing lightly enough, she bounces a few times and comes to a stop, looking around after the short hopping teleporter maze... "Yeah. Not a fan." Is her only comment. Something about freefall being out of your control never feels good to her though.

When Ashley lands, she gives him a thumbs up. A borrowed gesture obviously. The upper thumb. She didn't do both thumbs anymore. "Napalm's not the issue. That just gives you a good concussive blast and isn't as likely to get weird like the flour there. Also less fireball and more bang." There's a pause. "Think fireworks." That's the right word!

Venetia's question gets a simple enough response, "I mean, I'd probably be more surprised if mine ended up as some weird bird or something. I dunno." She shrugs. Matters of the soul weren't her schtick. Too far from home to fall back on her own beliefs sort of thing.

"Soldier practicing is usually drills or practice, idea's the same." Hey she had to learn these local words, she'll share them because it's neat. "Or parade. Or some CO has decided it's his or her duty to make us stand at attention in the baking sun." She keeps the griping to a minimum. It's a good natured list of 'complaints'.

Now though? There's a particular smell. "It's been three years and I can still smell that gods be damned swamp." her nose twitching, resisting the urge to wretch at it. Sometimes a sensitive nose isn't a good thing.

The round the corner in time to see the pyreflies dancing around for a moment before the source of that wonderful new smell slams to the ground, making the room shudder briefly. "Heads up." the fuzzy rodent calls out and wings off a snap shot with one hand. Her eyes were watering and the scent was infinitely worse. What a week to forget to bring a rebreather. Especially when it roars and the creature's breath washes over them. Followed soon by its more infamous bad breath. The cloud getting Juni to all, but run away from it lest it permanently burn her nose out. She does wing a few shots its way though as those tendrils lash out along the ground and through the air, shuffling the party's way.

DG: Juni Vandrer has contributed a Combat Basic Action toward her party's challenge, Great Malboro.
<Pose Tracker> Ashley Winchester has posed.

"How do you fit so much soul in there, miss Venetia?" Ashley's question is as innocent as it is nonsensical and also mostly rhetorical. It's also: not very helpful given the circumstances. What IS helpful, maybe, are SPHERES. Spheres are always handy in Spiran dungeons! You never know when you might need to blow up a wall or something. Or maybe you just shove it into a grid and gain PHENOMENAL COSMIC POWER. Unfortunately, Ashley doesn't have any available level ups to use the spheres with.

"Oh, fireworks. Got it." He could probably make something like that work with his flashbang canisters. They're called 'flashbangs' but they're really 'ultrasonic shockwave projectors', so pretty much the same thing! But more hurty. "Honestly, most of my good stuff is made by the folks back in R&D. But better jury rigging is good, too!"

HEY SO YOU KNOW WHAT'S DOUBLE ULTRA TERRIBLE UNFORTUNATE?

Malboro.

MALBORO.

"Oh Granas I know that smell," it's the same smell that permeates so many nooks and crannies of the Citrine Springs. It's a stench that makes even the tastiest looking cupcake utterly inedible because THAT STINK is STUCK IN YOUR NOSE and just refuses to leave. The Malboro crashes down, and Ashley immediately regrets the fact that his gun needs two hands to properly use. He could really use something to cover his mouth with-- or perhaps...

"Idea!" If the Malboro's mouth is busy doing other things, maybe it can't use its infamously bad breath as often!? Ashley loads a peculiar canister into his rifle and fires, aiming straight for the Malboro's mouth. This isn't an incendiary or even a flashbang, no. This...

Is a canister of compressed pastries.

It goes POOF with fluffy, tasty, mouth-stuffing goodness the moment it contacts the back of the Malboro's throat. It's honestly a massive waste, but Ashley has more canisters where that one came from.

And he quickly follows with an incendiary, because that breath has got to be flammable, right?

(He doesn't notice Avril giving him the cold shoulder, because quite frankly he has a bigger and more tentacly problem to deal with right now!!)

DG: Ashley Winchester has used his Tool Portable Pastries toward his party's challenge, Great Malboro. Cleanse! All
negative effects will be cleared at the end of the round!
<Pose Tracker> Venetia Vuong has posed.

Venetia escapes the waterworks! Go Team Ammolite!

Venetia, actually, seeing how near a thing it is and having had to do about six teleports with strange equipment in short order, does a litle dance at the end. "It's not just like that," Venetia tells Juni. "Are you interested in geology?" she asks Avril then.

Before her nose wrinkles. "I smell it too," Venetia says, reaching for her hip.

IT ROARS! The stench is immeasurable! The funk of forty thousand years! Venetia knows what can clear up that scent, or at least put something in the air that will take away from it.

"Ghhgh! Can't cast in this damn - ARRGH!" Venetia clears leather with her gun and fans the hammer, aiming the gun center mass. Five loud BANGS even as the canister of pastries flies outwards. "DINOGINOS WEPT WHAT IS IT EATING, IT'S OWN SINS??"

DG: Venetia Vuong has used her Tool The Gun Will Solve The Combat Challenge And Its Associates toward her party's
challenge, Great Malboro. Embolden! Party Combat boosted!
<Pose Tracker> Avril Vent Fleur has posed.

Does Avril now believe that students spend time in quiet assembly like mass or in the school grounds like soldiers drilling? It's more likely than you think!

"I am fond of gemstones," she says, glancing over at Venetia. "It has been some time since I have had the opportunity to work with them directly. I consider myself an amateur jeweler," she she explains, gesturing towards herself. "Or, metalworker, perhaps? I am fond of such intricate personal items, whether they become set with gems or not."

In the chamber beyond, there are Pyreflies. This is a warning sign.

    The other is the scent.

"...Ah," Avril says, her nose wrinkling at the stench. She, too, knows that smell.

Ice rises in an array about her, six shards of glittering ice spinning themselves out of nothing at all to hang at the ready like an assortment of guards. They do not need to wait long for her call: she raises but a hand as something looms in from the darkness and they fly for the Fiend like so many frosty missiles.

If there is anything at all still standing when all is said and done, well, that is when Avril -- drawing her blade -- shall close to melee and have with the Malboro more directly.
    Yes. Regardless of the scent.

DG: Avril Vent Fleur has contributed a risky Combat Action toward her party's challenge, Great Malboro.

<Pose Tracker> Juni Vandrer has posed.

Well, despite its size, impressive new stink and lashing vine tendrils doing their best, the Marlboro has most certainly run into the wrong party!

Juni's still popping shots into the thing even as Ashley tries to feed it food. Something that if she weren't currently wretching and trying to avoid making a bigger mess of things while firing that alien carbine one-handed, she'd have questioned the sanity of.

That it worked means she doesn't have to apologize though. Instead she just files it away in the back of her head under 'This planet's weird' and calls it good.

Adding to the myriad of new speed holes punched by an alien rail rifle, Venetia's bullets also punch great big holes in the plant monster. Which is currently trying to figure out how to get a bunch of sticky pastries out of the way so it can spew more gas towards the troublesome group of drifters.

A muffled "Bread already gave me problems and that new smell's not helping" muttermuttercough. Incidentally it does cough up some of the pastries and inhales like it's about to breathe more fog on the group. Instead plugged by ice now. Also you know, even more holes. The thing is more hole than fiend at this point and with the repeated onslaught, it shudders a few times. Falls face forward in a pile of slime, plant goo and frosting and is just as quickly dispatched.

"My eyes are watering ugh." is all Juni can get out at this point. Looking to either get past the thing or away from it. She'll take her chances with freefall after all.

DG: Ashley Winchester has drawn a new Challenge.

<Pose Tracker> Ashley Winchester has posed.

The Malboro is slain! A culinary victory, achieved without issue! Or maybe the fact that Ashley can't smell the Malboro's stink is more of an indication that his olfactory senses have already been obliterated. What use is a baker who can't smell? A chef with no nose!? Perhaps... they're about to find out.

        CHAIN BATTLE!!

"Hang on," Ashley warns, the sense of... danger and forboding still absolutely palpable, even with the Malboro's demise. "Something's not right. It feels... like we're still in mortal peril. Anyone see anything...?"

There. In the shadows of the only passage forward, a pair of yellow eyes shine overtop of a softly glowing lantern. With a gentle, almost innocent <plip plip plip>, it strides slowly ever closer. Ever... closer... until finally, the light fully illuminates its form, its...

...Adorable... round... moss green form.

"A-aww, what a cute little guy," Ashley nearly coos. "Look at him, with his little knife. Hey buddy, do you want some pastries too?" He pops open another can of tasty treats and gently rolls it over to the tonberry's inexorable advance.

Plip. Plip. Plip.

"He's got a little chef's knife! Maybe he's interested in baking too? Ahahaha~"

Plip. Plip. Plip.

The sense of forboding... the dread of danger... they're only continuing to grow...

This is the power of Venetia's [Gun]. She got the [Gun] from a [Student]. She hasn't ever [Given it back]. Jimmy Chan has had to buy a [New Gun].

Smoke trails around her. It looks awesome. Venetia takes a moment to reload as she breathes through her mouth. "Now that you mention it, the tension does feel, at most, slightly eased," she answers Ashley, though she's not so concerned as to not reload her gun.

"Don't care for bread?" Venetia comments to Juni.

And then around a corner comes --

-- As a sorceress, Venetia can feel it.

<Pose Tracker> Avril Vent Fleur has posed.

The Malboro is downed! But the stench still remains. Avril lingers above what remains as it dissipates to Pyreflies, her expression either one of grim concentration or... possibly that of someone trying not to breath deeply.

Or both. It could be both.

But there is another presence within these halls, one that renders even the lingering foulness of the Fiend they have felled to so much afterthought. Avril can feel it. A terrible presence looms in the darkness! Ahead, eyes shine brilliantly: a harbinger of what is to come! It's--

    Small, isn't it.

Avril, blade still drawn, finds herself... hesitate here as the Fiend makes its slow but steady approach. Her gaze flits over towards Ashley, then back to the Tonberry. Then over at Ashley.

Then at the Tonberry which is getting.
    Closer.

    Step by step.

Dread only accumulates the closer it gets. Eventually--

Avril, as she has said before, does what others will not. If one must be struck down, then she will do it. She rushes forward at that critical moment, blade cutting through the air.

But will she be fast enough...?!

DG: Avril Vent Fleur has contributed a Combat Basic Action toward her party's challenge, Master Tonberry.
<Pose Tracker> Juni Vandrer has posed.

Juni Vandrer groans and mutters as the scent is still a bit overwhelming, even as it's dissipating. "I'm bringing incendiaries anytime I come to this world from now on." Muttermuttergag.

A flask is pulled and uh, she splashes some under her nose after taking a drink. Burning alcohol is better than that at this point. Also it burns, but she sucks it up. You can't see her eyes watering briefly.

Venetia's question gets her to open her mouth and hook a finger in to show the sharp teeth off, "Not really. Can eat some veggies just fine, but bread as tasty as it can be never sits right and I just.. try not to eat too much of it."

She spots the thing wandering towards them. With a knife. In this hellhole. "Yeah I'm just going to assume it's a problem."

She lifts her rifle, still one handed at first, but eventually securing it properly to take a shot at the creature. There's enough of a delay as the scope calibrates to stop her, but there's a good hunch in her mind that no one will...

Either way, with the others, she's watching her lines of fire and only shoots when Avirl's in the clear. Not at all coming close to risking friendly fire! She doesn't even comment on it.

DG: The party led by Venetia Vuong has passed this challenge! The party gained 20 exploration! If anyone needs to use
party management commands, do so now. Otherwise, the next round's GM may begin the next round with +dungeon/draw.
<Pose Tracker> Ashley Winchester has posed.

"Aw, but he's just a little guy!" Ashley protests as bullets and swordplay alike bear down on the Tonberry. But even with holes blown into his body and gashes torn into his robes, the Tonberry's advance does not abate. It is sure in its steps, advancing bit by utterly unstoppable bit. For something so small, it is in every way a juggernaut, a manifestation of the absolute certainty of death...!

And yet, by gun and sword, the creature is kept at bay. Venetia and Avril seem to become too much trouble for the Tonberry. It seems, instead, to focus on the other two.

It seems that, while death cannot be outrun, it can be outlasted.

Or perhaps even bribed. The Tonberry stares at Ashley for a long time, as if waiting for him to join his friends in shooting and stabbing at the creature. But he does not. There are only pastries. The Tonberry seems to nod and picks up the offering. Juni, though...

Juni was the last to shoot it. And the Tonberry came all this way, and hasn't stabbed anyone yet. It advances one more step closer, and then--

SHANK!!

There is a knife... sticking out of poor Juni, specifically.

And the Tonberry-- is nowhere to be seen. But, so are the pastries.

Bribe... Successful?

"Oh Granas, Juni! Hold on, I've got medical supplies--" And it seems the air of danger has dissipated for now. There's... some time to handle that wound.

Some.

A little.

DG: Venetia Vuong has drawn a new Challenge.
===============================<* Omega Ruins *>================================
===============<* CHALLENGE - Ultima Weapon - Shimmering Rain *>================
| Type: Final | Dungeon Ability: Agility | Challenge Rating: 4 |
---------------------------< Challenge Information >----------------------------
You reach the very heart of the Omega Ruins. Ahead of you is a massive
amphitheater, which is surrounded on all sides by a deep pit that seems
bottomless. You cannot see inside the amphitheater from here, as its walls
block line of light. There is a brilliant white-blue glow coming from
inside, though, which shines over the tops of its walls and through some of
the windows that can be seen.

You find one of the long, narrow stone bridges that leads to it. As you
begin to cross, though, you hear a bellowing roar...

...and a titanic Fiend leaps overhead. Ultima Weapon is a quadrupedal,
almost centaur-like creature. It is covered in black and red chitin, with a
face that looks almost human-like. It has two huge, clawed hands -- those
stretch out. Then, a massive ball of white light appears between its hands
-- and splits apart into a /MASSIVE/ rain of thousands of bolts of white
light that rush down towards you.

You will need to dodge them on your final rush to the amphitheater.

<Pose Tracker> Venetia Vuong has posed.

"You see?" Venetia tells Ashley, at the end.

There is some time to tend to the wounds that come from inserting a knife into someone --

(Venetia contributes by putting some sort of red-ruby-juice mojo on Juni. She seems to think this helps. It doesn't, directly, although it might give Juni a sort of subliminal comfort about the wound's gravity.)

-- but the good news is that they're near the end.

"To return to our earlier topic," Venetia says, "gems are LOVELY - I actually have a Crest that calls up a plethora of the rather more common ones. We don't have a jewelry program there exactly, but there are stonecarving projects and I know there's a lapidary avenue just down -"

Something roars.

Venetia's mouth hangs slightly open as the ULTIMA WEAPON appears.

It swoops.. it seems to pass... and then it gathers energy.

"Run," Venetia says, and she gets out another Crest Graph to hold as she runs. Is it the one she foreshadowed? Is she going to try to harry the Ultima Weapon!?

No! She is not that much of a fool; instead; raising the Crest Graph with a hopeful gleam, she takes a huge vaulting leap... rises... rises... and... comes descending downwards, having not really gained much speed but having not lost any either. She repeats the process, which honestly is probably a worse idea than just running, especially since she's still pumping her legs as if she's trying to get 'something' to work.

DG: Venetia Vuong has contributed a risky Agility Action toward her party's challenge, Ultima Weapon - Shimmering Rain.
<Pose Tracker> Avril Vent Fleur has posed.

    Juni gets stabbed.

    "No-- oh, it's departed!"

There's a little bit of time, once the threat has vanished, pastries and all (where did it go? is it following them... even now?! (some things don't bear dwelling upon)). Avril disperses with her sword -- literally, the blade edge vanishes and she tucks away the hilt -- and produces the Sea Medium. From there, she'll apply a little healing if needed, but the wound does not seem to be too terrible, so that's a small relief.

"Oh, is that so? I have not spent much time in Guild Galad," Avril admits. "It is rather expansive, and I shouldn't wish to get lost."

Especially since that happens to her rather frequently as it stands.

    "I shouldn't mind visit--"

There is a roar. Something glimmers in the near distance. "...What is...?"

Avril sees it, as it begins to draw in power. Her heart skips a beat in her chest.

Clasping her Medium -- still in her arms -- tight against her chest, she does just that.
But she also invokes a prayer to the Sea Guardian, in the hopes that even a world away, she might hear it.

    "O Lucadia, please, help us--"

    The Medium shines.

DG: Avril Vent Fleur has used her Tool Sea Medium toward her party's challenge, Ultima Weapon - Shimmering Rain.
Quicken! Party Agility boosted!
<Pose Tracker> Ashley Winchester has posed.

Basic first aid is an important skill that most Musketeers have at least passing familiarity with. When your buddy gets shot in the arm, you often don't have time to wait for a medic to show up with proper healing. Knowing how to work a tourniquet or a roll of bandages and disinfectant is sometimes the difference between life and death.

But it probably won't do anything to wounds inflicted by... That.

"What--" Ashley start when the terrible shadow falls across their path. It's...

"A... dragon? No, it's--" A living weapon. Raw magic gathers in its hands, before being unleashed in a catastrophic deluge of arcane projectiles. How do you even dodge something like that? It's... Unfeasible. Maybe even impossible.

But they can at least give it a try.

"Stay close!" Ashley calls, before hucking a boomerang out into the storm of energy bullets. Instead of sailing into the void, it instead whirls back around and orbits in a tight circle overhead, blazing with protective symbological wards carved into its structure by some of ARMS' best mages. Today, the boomerang is not merely a boomerang-- it's also a shield.

Though it may not last for long against an onslaught like this one.

"Move. Move! Fast as you can, let's go!"

The Sea Medium shines in Avril's grasp...

But will it be enough...?

DG: Ashley Winchester has risked with his Tool Magic Boomerang toward his party's challenge, Ultima Weapon - Shimmering
Rain. Resilient! Party shielded from some exhaustion next round!
<Pose Tracker> Juni Vandrer has posed.

Being stabbed is nothing new to the alien and she's not about to say she's used to being stabbed, but she's kind of used to being stabbed at this point. Nothing to be proud of. She mostly looks surprised and just says, "Oh." and raises her gun to shoot the thing one last time with a flinch. That's a trained reaction though.

"Right between the damn plate" she mutters, putting a hand to it and staggering back after that shot. Falling back briefly and leaning on her tail. "Damn damn." She begins to pull kit out of her satchel, a bandage, some gel in a container, a packet of.. something powdery. She fumbles with it and gets the wound packed and pressured.

The others are happy to help out too admittedly. This is sadly interrupted by the arrival of a super weapon. She glares at it, shoots a shot at it then turns and runs. Spite and frustration only goes so far. She's limping, there's some red spots behind. But she at least knows what routes to take and how to avoid problems right? Hopefully she can keep an eye on her HUD.

DG: Juni Vandrer has used her Tool Survival Kit toward her party's challenge, Ultima Weapon - Shimmering Rain.
