Energy Nede

"Hello there! Welcome to the world of Energy Nede. Although we nearly lost it, we've worked hard to keep our world alive. We share this world with creatures called Pokémon. For some people, Pokémon are pets; some use Pokémon to fight. I study them, to give us and Pokémon hope for the future."

-- Professor Samuel Oak

Energy Nede, once, was an entire planet. Over forty thousand years ago, Nede was at the heart of an interstellar empire. It lost this empire to a war, and then a terrible experiment caused the loss of the vast majority of the planet. Only a fragment of one continent was preserved, and only a portion -- in a large dome -- retains its atmosphere.

Origins

Energy Nede has existed in its current state for slightly over 35,000 years. Its histories don't dwell on the period when Nede was a powerful empire controlling thousands of planets, but instead focus on the fact that they brought about their own demise. The history of Energy Nede since then has been overwhelmingly peaceful, both from having learned from the past and having little room for mistakes. Much of its society and technology is dedicated to keeping Energy Nede alive, both environmentally and emotionally, and to preserving the memory of what was lost.

Geography

Energy Nede consists of a fragment of a continent. Deep within the ground, there are massive generators that provide the entirety of the continent with artificial gravity. However, only a portion of the fragment has an atmosphere. This covers most of the eastern part of the fragment, which looks not unlike a massive bubble of air from space. Inside the bubble, it has a blue sky, complete with a simulated sun and night-day cycle. Weather control provides rain, snow, and other climate-appropriate weather, though never at destructive extremes. It is often effectively random.

The region inside of the atmospheric bubble is called the Kanto Region, after its pre-destruction name. It is largely temperate plains, with some regions that are cooler and dryer, though never to the extremes experienced on Filgaia. All of the cities and settlements of Energy Nede are located in the Kanto Region.

Areas outside of the atmospheric bubble have artificial gravity, but are exposed to hard vacuum. The oceans are frozen, the area is lit only by the light of the atmospheric bubble, and there is no air there. This region is often called Lost Johto, after the region formerly to the west of Kanto.

Geopolitics

The Kanto Region is governed by the Kanto Diet, which meets in the capital of Saffron City. The Nedians do not maintain a military (which is a difference from canon), but the Greater Kanto Police Department has a limited amount of military grade equipment. Much of this is kept in Armslock City, which is so-named for its storage of a number of ancient Nedian weapons. However, the lack of military resources has proven a problem with the recent awakening of the Ten Wise Men in Phynal.

The Pokémon League is a collection of professional trainers, which includes the Gym Leaders and the Elite Four. They assist in criminal investigations, disaster recovery, and pacifying dangerous wild Pokémon. They often cooperate with the Diet and the Police.

There are some criminal elements in the Kanto Region. The largest is Team Rocket, a syndicate that engages in illicit Pokémon capture and raising, and also does a number of crimes related to theft and selling stolen goods to wealthy collectors.

Additionally, recently, the Ten Wise Men -- a group of ancient Nedians who were artificially constructed -- seized Phynal in northeastern Energy Nede.

Flora and Fauna

Unlike Lunar and Filgaia, the countryside of Energy Nede (at least, in the Kanto Region) is not a particularly dangerous place. For thousands of years, the wildlife have been bred and altered to not pose a serious threat, and are almost uniformly tameable. This has led to "monsters" being called Pokèmon, and while accidents and unfortunate events happen, they are largely seen as partners on Energy Nede.

There is almost no life outside of the atmospheric bubble. Lost Johto does have the occasional rogue automaton that patrols the airless wastelands. There are also rumors of dangerous Pokémon that survive in the few tunnels under Lost Johto that retain air.

Culture

Nedians enjoy a post-modern, post-consumption, highly advanced society. Unlike Filgaia and Lunar, everyone on Nede is a species called a "Nedian." They have pointed ears and otherwise look human, to the extent that they're often indistinguishable from elves from Lunar and Filgaia at first glance (though they are not the same, and a medical analysis would show this).

Their habitations range from having massive skyscrapers of glass and steel, such as in Saffron City, to more pastoral, rural environments. However, regardless of where one lives on Energy Nede, they have access to television, books and articles, and stores selling nearly everything. Delivery can bring food and goods to people in any city or town quickly.

Much of their culture is based around Pokémon. The idea of a journey -- often undertaken by both teenagers and adults, looking to learn more about themselves -- is common. Media about such journeys is common. People will travel across Kanto, undertake the trials at a Gym, and explore the (relatively safe) countryside while collecting Pokémon. Pokémon are also treated as pets, companions, and help with a number of jobs.

Travel and Communications

Radio, television, telephones, and other advanced communications are common throughout the Kanto Region. These devices do not work on Filgaia and Lunar, however. There is a popular chat and microblogging social media service called PokéLive, which most Nedians use on a daily basis. It is mercifully not toxic and includes cute images of Pokémon.

Travel between cities is done through mag-lev trains, which are sometimes elevated and sometimes underground. Boats on the Kanto Sea are common; there are also airports and airplanes. However, there are well-maintained foot paths between the cities, which those undertaking a journey to become a Pokémon Champion are expected to use.

Current Events

The most recent event of note is the awakening of the Ten Wise Men. The general public doesn't quite understand what this means; they know it entails some ancient Nedian weapon activating at the fortress of Phynal, and that region being blocked off by the Greater Kanto Police Department.

There are also rumors of Team Rocket trying to capitalize on the situation, but the criminal organization has been active for nearly ten years and, despite the efforts of the Police and the League, have never been successfully shut down.
