"Yes, hi, hello! I have a package for you. *FFZZZHHHT* ...P-Please ignore the aura of crackling darkness!"

Redi Hayworth is a long way from home. She delivered mail for the Lacour Postal Express as a living. After her hometown of Hilton was attacked by strange monsters, she was gravely injured and only barely escaped with her life. Her memory of that escape is quite fuzzy -- she blames the blood loss -- but it apparently involved an Elw teleporter, as she awoke in the middle of an Aquvian ruin and required saving. Misfortune has kept her from returning home in the intervening years, but she is dutifully trying to deliver her mailbag full of packages. Many are quite late and sometimes unwelcome, because Redi is also cursed. She has an intermittent aura of darkness around her and cannot be healed by most magics. This aura sometimes flares up when she brings someone their very late delivery, to her immense embarrassment.

Background

Prior to Chapter 3

In 486 PC, a girl named Redi Hayworth was born in the city of Hilton to a pair of government workers for the Kingdom of Lacour. They were reasonably wealthy and could give their daughter a good upbringing. For the first twenty years of her life, Redi had a good life in Hilton; she had friends, she attended school, and she even got a couple of years of education at Linga that earned her a job with the Lacour Postal Express.

Redi became a letter carrier! This led her throughout the kingdom of Lacour, often by train, to bring letters and packages to paying customers. Lacour had some fame for having one of the best postal services on Ignas. Much of her work was in Hilton, though.

Two months into that job, there was an attack on Hilton by a strange group of monsters. It came in the middle of her route. There were several horrifying, spectral monsters that rampaged throughout the city; fortunately, Lacour's military and some Drifters were able to dispatch them (though not any of our Drifters, as this happened while they were in Aquvy). There were also several Veruni scientists and guards that came with the monsters and observed, but didn't interfere.

The monsters were almost ghost-like, and attacked with both spells and strikes that seemingly drained the life force from people. Redi was one of the people attacked. She is unclear on what happened after that; she blacked out after being attacked, but recalls running. She also recalls, dimly, a teleporter activating; and when she came to, she was in a ruin in Aquvy, near Sylvaland. Redi managed to sneak out of it and make her way to Sylvaland, and began inquiring about a ship back to Ignas. But, she had little gella, and shipping routes to Ignas were completely disrupted by the war with Odessa and its aftermath.

She knew she had to make ends meet somehow. She had always had a little training in martial arts -- sometimes, travel between Lacour's cities could involve bandits and monsters -- and she bought a quarterstaff to help with that. She decided to work on finding the deliveries she could in Aquvy (a surprising number, but it had been a crazy few years, and some were letters passing through Lacour for individuals living abroad). She became a Drifter, too, as she worked on getting gella and tracking people down.

This led to two baffling discoveries.

The first was that Redi could heal from wounds surprisingly quickly and surprisingly thoroughly, but healing magic no longer worked on her. The second was that Redi, rather suddenly, could use a mysterious fire and shadow magic that can drain life from her enemies and, to a more limited extent, her surroundings.

Redi, in time, made two fast friends: Yulie Ahtreide and Hicalu Wilwisp, along with smaller friendships with other Drifters. She also befriended -- and then had to confront the true nature of the Fangs of Valmar. This left her shaken, but she couldn't well let the world be destroyed. This same drive led her to join the expedition to retrieve the Sorcery Globe, and that in turn led her to being stranded on Energy Nede and even further from home.

Skills, Powers and Abilities

As a martial artist, Redi has access to a quarterstaff and a host of skills that are oriented around using that staff to defend herself. She can do ki strikes through her staff, and generally has a style that focuses on blocking hits that come in and setting herself up to use her sorcerous attacks, which are quite a bit more damaging.

Redi's sorceries are a mystery. The very adept might spot similarities with both Veruni Ether and the way that Shamans use the Ley to power their Guardian-infused magic, though it is closer to Veruni magic than not. They tend to manifest as fire and shadow. When used for awhile, sparks and motes of red, violet, and black light tend to drift around her for several hours afterward.
