If the tales are true, there could be treasure in the sea caves near Hilton.
...Or possibly a monster's nest. But what is an adventurer save someone
who's willing to take a bit of a risk and ferret out the truth. The only
catch is that the caves can only be entered at low tide.

Finding the caves is not the hard part, when all is said and done. The hard
part is actually the waiting, assuming one hasn't come here already aware of
when the low tide will take place.

Or maybe it's the second-most hard part: the hard part involves the multiple
entrances into the cave network. Is there one that seems, perhaps, like it
might be more fruitful than the others? Or at least, one that won't plunge
your group into immediate terrible danger! ..Unless that is your intention,
  of course.

<Pose Tracker> Hannah Curie has posed.

It has been... far too long since Hannah had done some proper adventuring. Some real 'take your life into your own hands and facing real uncertainty' type stuff. The type of stuff that used to be her bread and butter for the better part of five years, along with lots of delivery, retrieval, and odd jobs. Working for ARMS is great and all (and even better now that she can finally pick up her paychecks again!), but this is the type of stuff she'd dreamed of as she grew up listening to the stories of other drifters.

She's grinning a little, as a result, as she stands on a rock some distance away, watching the waves flow in and out of the small recess in the coast line. There are a lot of potential entrances, and even with Zephyr helping her check, it's not clear which route is the best. She's got a book open, studying a chart that seems to be a tide table as she draws a map of the cave entrances on a blank piece of paper.

"Well, given the length of the tide," she murmurs quietly as she squints... she flips to another page that shows a small catalogue of the local wildlife. "... and the local fauna and flora... These are most likely to be clear, since there's not enough water..." She circles some entrances on her drawing of the coastline.

"... and these are most likely not inhabited by waht we're lookin' for, since they stay too submerged for too long..." She circles another set.

"So I vote for one a these," she says finally, drawing a thicker circle around two individual entrances in the middle.

DG: Hannah Curie has used her Tool Monteblanc's Manual of Mysteries, Mazes, and Monsters, 5th Revised Edition toward her
party's challenge, Sea-ing the Bigger Picture. Enlighten! Party Wits boosted!
<Pose Tracker> Josephine Lovelace has posed.

"Sure as the rain is wet, I'll warrant," opines Josephine Lovelace on this particular topic as she squints down on Hannah's sketches and logical process of elimination over which one's likely to lead them to what they're looking for in the time they have available.

There's a snap of ozone as she lights her cigarette and takes a deep long drag while gazing down at the cave entrances. "See, now if it were me... I'd just go with the one that called to me most, right? Which I guess, could be any of 'em," she remarks, gesturing broadly at the exposed cave entrances with her right hand. Somewhere, nearby, Penelope worries at a bit of seagrass near to their vantage point of the caves.

Josie, as is often the case with such things, had ended up in their 'party' largely by chance. She'd been loping around the area for mysterious reasons of her own one would assume, and when she'd heard about the caves, well--

'Money' is a good motivator, and it's not as if she can live off the largess of the Nedians forever. Particularly not if she wants to get done the things she wants to get done.

"So, what d'ya think our odds are, kiddo? We find a nest of monsters, or some good old pirate treasure? Me, I'd love the latter..."

Especially since her wallet has more than a few moths coming out of it, so to speak.

DG: Josephine Lovelace has used her Tool Pack of Cigarettes toward her party's challenge, Sea-ing the Bigger Picture.
Cleanse! All negative effects will be cleared at the end of the round! Shortsighted! The party will suffer a penalty
next round... but not this round!
<Pose Tracker> Eleanor Klein has posed.

Eleanor can go for a good adventure now and then--but officially, her concern is more the danger to Hilton (and thus the way ARMS can cooperate in the area). And officially, that's all it is.

...But she brought a crew that loves a bit of 'adventure' so that's just fine.

"Hmmm," Eleanor says. "So, you'v narrowed it down, and..."

"I can narrow the rest of the way."

Eleanor pulls a green book and flips through it; it's magically protected from the sea air, of course. But as she finds the page, "A spell to find what destiny has laid before us."

Eleanor intones a few words in an ancient language, eyes glowing--

And music begins to play! ...Most loudly from that path, over there, one of the ones Hannah identified.

"...That way. And there is something to be said for a bit of treasure, I suppose..."

DG: Eleanor Klein has used her Tool Book of Mudora toward her party's challenge, Sea-ing the Bigger Picture. Enlighten!
Party Wits boosted!

DG: The party led by Hannah Curie has passed this challenge! The party gained 20 exploration! If anyone needs to use
party management commands, do so now. Otherwise, the next round's GM may begin the next round with +dungeon/draw.
<Pose Tracker> Hannah Curie has posed.

Hannah looks up to Josie, raising an eyebrow as she says 'any of them' could call to her. Wryly she says, "Some a them are as likely to get us drowned as not," she comments. "I'm votin' we don't try those ones. 'less we wanna get stuck in there... I did bring rations, but Zephyr'll probably get cranky if we have to hunker down in there."

The red-tailed hawk on Hannah's shoulder chirps.

""More'n welcome to wait out here by yourself," she says.

Zephyr seems to be considering that with a tilt of his head.

"Pirate treasure might be interestin'," she concedes. "'Specially if it's old an' historical. Ain't as familiar with Ignas as I am with Aquvy, so it'd be a nice opportunity to learn more. Findin' a monster would still be an interestin' ecological find, though."

Hannah's all for helping the locals too, of course. She can be here for more than one reason! She grins at Eleanor as she brings out her own book, casting a spell to narrow things down. It's been far too long since they've had a chance to do something sane and nice and normal.

"Please do," invites Hannah, waiting as the spell is cast... though she blinks as music starts to sound. "Well now that's an interestin' effect. We followin' the music, then?"

She's never heard of that method of nagigating a maze before, but she's up for trying it.

"Let's go then." Hannah makes her way down to that entrance, pulling out a crest graph and summoning an angry, sputtering flame from it. It looks like it doesn't want to stay confined to the area of the crest graph. "... Remind me to get one of them flashlights in Nede next time I'm back there," she mutters to herself.

She looks back and flashes a thumbs up. "All good in here! I can see the water line comes up some, but it don't completely fill the cave. We should be good to go!"

DG: Josephine Lovelace has drawn a new Challenge.

Most of the path through the cave you have chosen is relatively
straightforward: at most, you might see a fork in the road and typically
there is but one way forward. That changes when you reach this point,
  however.

There are... a lot of options before you here. There are at least ten
possible paths stretching out before you into the darkness of the cave
tunnels, perhaps even more then ten. And since it's a formerly-submerged sea
cave, it's not as if there's a helpful sign hanging out to direct you the
  right way.

Trial and error is certainly an option but the clock is ticking. Is there
some means by which you can determine which way you want to go (and not end
up on a round-about or a dead end)?

<Pose Tracker> Josephine Lovelace has posed.

"Right, now that'd be the thing, eh?" she remarks to Hannah, baring her teeth in a shit-eating grin. "Bad way to go, drownin'. Or so I'm told, anyhow. And I ain't keen on sitting a spell waitin' for the tide to go out, neither. I only know so many sea shanties!"

Penelope, though she has given Zephyr the Pigeon Eye, is otherwise focused on her struggle with the grass. Tug, tug.

"Aye, sure enough. That'd be a right coup, if'n those ecologizers had enough coin," Josie remarks, the slight twitch of her mouth betraying the fact that she's trying to see if she can get either of their goats with that neologism.

"Now there's a trick," Josie remarks, as Eleanor does her thing and from within the cave system a chime rings out. "Can't say I wouldn't mind similar or none. ...As long as I weren't havin' to do the rest of the job, mind," she appends with a wink. Tossing her cigarette aside and firmly grinding it out with the heel of her boot, she heads down into the tidal flats with the other two ladies.

It takes Penelope a little longer (it's an extremely troubling strand of shoregrass and she's determined to see it routed), but she does eventually follow, soaring down on the sea breeze.

It looks like Hannah's picked a real winner of a cave -- no, really. The first few minutes are fairly easy going through the winding path into the cliffside caverns. It seems like they're going to make good time!

And then they turn a bend and there are way, way too many potential pathways.

"Well," starts Josie, her left hand on her hip. "Ain't this a pretty mess. That's what... 5, 8, 10..."

    She pauses.

"Wonder how many of 'em circle back or peter out. Ain't possible they're all gonna see us through, like." Reaching up her hand to rub at her chin, she considers this problem carefully.

"Hey, Penelope." The pigeon, previously apparently dozing on Josie's shoulder, sits upright as if she'd been awakened by a loud alarm. "You feel like earnin' your keep, now?"

    Penelope is silent.

With practiced care, Josie reaches up and scoops the pigeon from her shoulder before casting her forth into the air before her. With a flutter of wings (and a baleful glare...???) Penelope takes off, winging down one of the potential pathways. "Well, that's one of 'em settled, maybe," Josie remarks, looking at the other two. "You girls got any other ideas?"

DG: Josephine Lovelace has used her Tool Penelope toward her party's challenge, Maze Malaise.
<Pose Tracker> Eleanor Klein has posed.

"Oh, I have a spell for water breathing," Eleanor says helpfully. Where did she pick that up? Probably another Sage special. "...But I don't have a 'not be waterlogged and miserable' spell, so best not, yes?"

Old and historical, ecological finds... Eleanor laughs. "Yes, you would think of the educational purposes. That's good! Befits a proper student, I think."

Sea shanties... "I happen to know a few, but I think they're a little bawdy for company."

Eleanor grins at Josie. "The rest of the job is the hard part, yes."

But they go onward. Annd soon...

Hm. Lots of them that probably circle back...

"Well," Eleanor says, "In that case..."

Eleanor pulls a Pokeball, and suddenly in her arms is a Vulpix. "Pyri!" Eleanor says. "You're said to have psychic abilities. Which way do you suggest?"

"Vul..."

Pyri stares into the distance, an then slowly looks across the party. Into Hannah's eyes, then Josie's...

And then--

"Pix!"

She blows a little fire towards one path.

DG: Eleanor Klein has used her Tool Spooky Pyri toward her party's challenge, Maze Malaise. Rally!
<Pose Tracker> Hannah Curie has posed.

"Ain't too keen to find out myself," Hannah says on the subject of drowning. "Got way too much to do." She laughs a little when Josie mentions sea shanties. "Well, I got a harmonica tucked away in my bag, but... ain't much of a virtuoso type."

"Depends on if they got a good patron or not, I s'pose." Hannah does not take that bait, this time.

She doesn't seem phased by a spell for water breathing, but she does blink a bit as she laughs at the educational benefits Hannah proposes. "... What? You tellin' me you wouldn't be interested in that, too?"

"'Sides, now that I'm finally here in Ignas, I'm tryin' my best to study up on the area so I can feel like I'm contributin' somethin' to Suzie's search... She's goin' through all that effort on my behalf, you know."

But they soon reach an overly large number of potential pathways, and no clear direction which.

Hannah chuckles as Josie just grabs Penelope and tosses her into the air. "Zephyr'd give me grief for days if'n I tried that." She reaches up to rub under his chin. "Though usually he'll help out if I'm askin' nicely enough."

Zephyr chirps happily at the affection.

Eleanor summons a Pyri, and Hannah blinks as the little fox pokemon stares into her eyes... and suddenly yanks her gaze away. "While you're doin' that..."

She pulls out her book again and goes to start examining the various passageways, looking at the strate in the rock, for signs of geological wear and tear, or for creature-made markings...

And she stops at the one Pyri indicates. "I'm thinkin' between these three, and if Pyri's votin' this one, then I am, too."

party's challenge, Maze Malaise. Enlighten! Party Wits boosted!

<Pose Tracker> Josephine Lovelace has posed.

"See, now, we're two thirds of a regular sailor's band already. Don't suppose you play the hornpipe, kiddo?" Josie remarks, as if seeking to try and get Hannah on this one. ...Which she might have to settle for, if it works, since her attempt on with the awful 'ecologizer' isn't going to do the trick.

"See? That's why better you 'n not me," Josie says, shaking her head at Eleanor's response. "Anyway, let's see what all this is about, yeah?"

And so it goes until they reach that many-tined fork in the road. "It's what they're used to," Josie remarks, though she gives Zephyr a glance. "How d'ya think they send off homing pigeons? ...Though she's always been a troublesome one, that girl."

It's been way too long for 'pigeon adolesence' to still be a reason for the trouble Penelope gives her, honestly.

It takes a few moments, but Penelope eventually makes her return trip and lands on a nearby outcropping of stone. The fact that she's returned by another route hasn't gone without notice by Josie, though. "Nix those two, then," she remarks, eyeing Penelope who is notably perched up high enough that even the tall Josie would have trouble reaching her again.

But fortunately, they're able to winnow down most of the rest due to Hannah's literal book learning ("Good eye, kiddo!") and Eleanor's Pyri ("Hm. Spooky.").

"Seems right enough for me," Josie remarks, before heading to try to walk down just that corridor.

    Penelope will, eventually, follow.

DG: Eleanor Klein has drawn a new Challenge.

"I'm definitely interested," Eleanor clarifies for Hannah. "I'm just happy to hear you talk about it. It's encouraging. And it's something to share!"

True, Susanna's search.. Eleanor considers that. But she has nothing to add for now, so instead she says to Josie, "Haha. I remember my time with sailors, during my graduate studies. They assumed I'd be completely stuffy, of course--a noble girl of that age. But I managed to learn a few things."

But pigeons! Pigeons are fascinating. And the routes...

Well, they make their wy through and Eleanor walks along, returingn Pyri to her pokeball rather than asking her to walk in water a a fire-type.

"hm?"

From another path--a crab! Eleanor blinks briefly and then steps back. "Well," she says, "This is a problem."

Pinch pinch!

She extends her hand and invokes a barrier before the group. "If you two would be so kind...?"

DG: Eleanor Klein has contributed a Combat Basic Action toward her party's challenge, Time for Crab.
<Pose Tracker> Hannah Curie has posed.

Hannah laughs a little at the mention of a hornpipe. "Nah, only other kinda music I know is a little bit o'... let's say, percussive maintenance?" She's in too good a spirits on a proper adventure to be phased too terribly by bad turns of phrase.

Josie mentions homing pigeons and Hannah considers that. "Suppose you gotta send 'em off somehow, huh?" Penelope is troublesome... "Yeah, Zephyr's got his moments too. Usually buggin' me that he wants to eat. You'd think I never feed 'im or he couldn't feed 'imself."

Hannah smiles to Eleanor, growing reflective for a moment. "... Thanks, that means a lot. And it's nice, bein' able to share it with you, an' all."

Eleanor doesn't comment on Suzie's search, but Hannah has more to say on it. "Been keepin' in touch with Suzie via the memory cubes, of course, but... been thinkin' I should find some time to make a trip down to Marze. Maybe help her out a bit."

She grins as Eleanor mentions spending time with sailors. "Did ya learn any good cusses when you were hangin' around 'em?" Of course, Eleanor did grow up in a port city...

They proceed forward, and eventually they encounter a rather large crab. Eleanor has a barrier, and asks them to help with the more direct part of the confrontation. "Alright." Suddenly her good cheer is much more dampened as she steps out from behind the barrier. Zephyr finds another perch,f or the moment.

Hannah taks out a crest graph and slams it down on the gorund with a shout of "Winter's Grasp!" A sharp, cruel, twisted tidal wave of ice surges forth for the grab, intending to trap it and hold it in place so they can bypass it...

Only it seems to ahve backfired some, as part of Hannah's lower arm is encased in ice that grew back towards her. "Consarn it, not again...!" she mutters with a few choice words as she works to yank herself free.

DG: Hannah Curie has used her Tool Crest Graph Pouch toward her party's challenge, Time for Crab.

<Pose Tracker> Josephine Lovelace has posed.

Josie's grin only grows wider. "You ever been around sailors much, kiddo? Trust me, I'd wager that'd be an improvement on their go at it and all. What d'ya think, we go ahead with our new careers?"

She is not actually serious, as much as she's pursuing the subject.

"Ha! See, birds is all the same in the end," Josie declares, gesturing broadly with her right hand. "Even the Pokemon I've befriended. It ain't too different, like, once you get down to brass tacks. But that suits me: it'd be a right problem if'n I had to go and figure out what made 'em tick from go each and every time."

She gestures towards the pathway Pyri indicated. "And speaking of 'go'..."

They don't get too far along, though, before there comes along a rather sizeable crab. Penelope takes roost even higher above, as if to suggest that she's having absolutely no part of this whatsoever.

"Don't suppose that's the eatin' sort," Josie muses as she fishes up her usual flask of rot-gut liquor. "Well, one way to find out!"

And she sloshes nearly half the contents of the flask at the crab, following up with an overhand toss of a lightning bolt its way. The remnants of that Symbological spell still crackling about her forearm, she turns her head as Hannah seemingly fumbles her own spellcasting and arches a pale eyebrow. "Well, ain't that a how-de-do. You need a thaw, kiddo?"

"Hahaha," Eleanor laughs. "She has a point," she says then of Josie and her sailors. "We could make a fine group!"

But birds... Hmm. Birds are the same? "I wonder..." She trails off thoughtfully. "Please don't grab hold of me when I transform," she reflects.

But Eleanor sees that reflective nature in Hannah. She smiles back.

"Marze, is it? I might go with you when you go." She has reasons. But--good cusses, is it?

Eleanor flushes a little. "W-well," she says, "...A few."

Despite Hannah's issue with her ice, the crab is frozen and then lightning bolted, in that order. The smell of the liquor is... fragrant, as it burns. We'll go with fragrant.

"Don't," Eleanor advises softly, when Josie offers to help. "Hannah will be fine." A pause, as she looks to her. She could reveal the difficulty... but that's up to Hannah, really. "Besides, I'm our healer, yes?"

Eleanor takes up some extra energy to heal Hannah from that mishap with a Crest of her own, and--

"Oh, ew."

She steps in lightninged crab...

<Pose Tracker> Hannah Curie has posed.

Hannah laughs, "Nah, ain't been on boats much. Most of my time's been spent hoofin' it from place to place. Aimin' to fix that, though..." As soon as she can get a workshop on the right continent of the world. "They sure do tell good stories, though." She grins a little. "Well, if I ever get tired of ARMS, I'll look you up."

(She is just joking around, and none of that is directed at Eleanor.)

"I mean, there's some diff'rences, but... yeah. I can accept pokemon on their own merits." She's still a little skeeved by some parts of Energy Nede, though.

Hannah grins at Eleanor. "Still wanna figure out if I can learn that spell somehow." And she'd never grab her friend, even when transformed into a bird.

She nods to Eleanor, "Yeah, that's it." She smiles, faintly. "Thanks. It'd be mighty appreciated. Suzie'd appreciate seein' you again, I'm sure. Hear tell we might find out some info on the Ten Wise Men there, too."

There's a big grin as Eleanor blushes. "Well, don't keep us waitin'!" Okay, that might be a bit of a good-natured tease. Probably.

Hannah sighs and shakes her head. It's not a fumble, not directly, but that's a bit much to explain. "Naw, I got it, jus'..." She looks down (which is easy considering her hand is stuck to the ground.) "... don't be freaked out."

She pulls out a second crest graph, which is glowing a bright red as she channels mana into it. "Blaze!" She inhales annnnnnd--

--blows a big ol' gout of flame right down on herself.

When she stands up, she's working her wrist a little but she is distinctly unburned.

And any injury she might've taken is healed with Eleanor's magic. "Thanks, Eleanor," she says quietly. She looks to the crab, and then to the piece Eleanor stepped in. "Oh, don't worry none. We'll get your shoes spiffed up like new once we get back to town."

Hannah puts her crest graphs away and looks to Josie. "It's... nothing to be worried about." Then why does she seem to worried about it? "... Long as you don't touch the ice, anyhow."

Her good spirits are very much dampened now as they continue through the cave. Her interest is definitely piqued when several crest graphs etched into the wall come into view. "Those're crests... who put these here?" Some fiddling reveals that there is some kind of incorrect order, and Hannah frowns as she pulls out a book to check some of the spellwork. (As well as make notes of what part of the correct order they've found already.)

"Eleanor, what do you make of this? Trial and error'd get us trhough eventually, but we don't know how long the sequence is... or if there might be a trap iff'n we fail enough..." She starts to trace her hands lightly around the crest graphs, trying to look for any etchings of the grander working at play here, cross referencing several diagrams in her book that all seem to revolve around different kinds of coded passcodes.

<Pose Tracker> Josephine Lovelace has posed.

"Ha! And maybe if I've tired of wanderin', I'll consider it proper myself!" Josie fires back.

And that gives Josie pause. "...Are you a bird through and through when you transform, though," Josie remarks after staring at Eleanor for a long moment. "It ain't like I ever considered it proper before, like. But now you've got me wonderin'. You got any urge to build a nest when you change, Nora?"

It's likely hard to tell from the expression on Josie's face whether she means that question sincerely... or if she's trying to pull Eleanor's leg (in a manner of speaking). It could be jest. Or she could be serious!

But then Hannah mentions Marze, and in the chaos and commotion of the crab's appearance, Josie nearly misses it, threading onto that topic of the moment when Eleanor likewise mentions it. "Marze? What's down in Marze?"

Don't, says Eleanor, of another matter, when the spell goes somewhat awry. And though Josie looks Eleanor's way... she nods minutely, as if to suggest she understands. Especially when Hannah demonstrates how she's able to get herself unstuck, so to speak. If Josie hadn't been the daughter of a wizard and then hung around with Lily so much, such a display might have even made her raise an eyebrow but--

"Right, so you do," she tells Hannah.

Without missing a beat, she approaches the carcass of the crab, taking care not to touch the ice. "Right-- that's settled. But I'd rather think I ain't that interested in finding out if it's good eating anymore, if'n you get my drift."

It's been flashfrozen, and scorched with electricity, and soaked in foul-smelling alcohol. It's enough to make anyone reconsider a light lunch.
Also Hannah said not to touch it, and this is one of the few things that Josie might be inclined to obey a warning over. Being the daughter of a wizard is enough to incline someone to be a little more wary towards sorcerous matters.

By tracing the path the crab had popped out of, they find themselves perhaps taken down a different path. Here, there are Crest symbols on the wall.

"It's all you, Nora. I know a little here and there on this, but I ain't a practitioner or none. Any pattern you see here about?"

So says Josie, admitting defeat as she gestures at the glyphs.

    "Coo."

    But Penelope...
...does not admit defeat as readily. The pigeon, quite deliberately, flies into one of the symbols which recesses into the wall...!

DG: Josephine Lovelace has used her Tool Penelope toward her party's challenge, A Puzzle of Crests.
<Pose Tracker> Eleanor Klein has posed.

Eleanor is amiable enough about matters. She quirks an amused smile at Josie as she says she'll actually consider it--but that question...

"...You know?" Eleanor says. "I've never stopped and stayed still long enough to think about it."

But she does like Nede; she spends a lot of time there these days. But that spell? "Hm hm. If we think of a way, definitely."

Hannah is definitely teasing. "Oh, I couldn't!"

But--Hannah takes care of herself, as Eleanor expected she would. It's 'nothing to worry about', but that may or may not be true. Josie, it seems, understands--understands well enough to nod, and Eleanor nods back, grateul. But they do continue through at least, until...

They both go to her. A pttern...

Penelope dives into one of the symbols, it would seem, and Eleanor considers for a moment. "...I think..."

"My professors would hate it," she says wryly, "But I have a shortcut. We could figure the passcode for the matter, and that would take some time, or..."

She pulls the Book of Mudora. "I could cast to see the order in which the enchantments were placed and we'd have a big clue."

A grin. "We might as well!"

<Pose Tracker> Hannah Curie has posed.

Hannah is curious in the answer to Josie's question herself. She gets the impression a lot of Eleanor's friends find it weird, but she happens to find it cool, so she's curious if Eleanor has an answer to that.

But Marze-- Hannah tenses up a bit, and looks down again. "It's... kind of a long story. Um... basically, when I was a baby, I was found... somewhere in the area. We're, uh, trying to find it again." Didn't she grow up in Damzen? Long way to go from Ignas... and what could be taking so long to find?

She sees Josie being careful of the ice, and quietly says, "It's... fine when the spell ain't active no more." The way she says 'fine' comes with a pretty heavy dose of air quotes. "... still wouldn't contemplate eatin' it though, just in case."
]
There's an attempt at a half-hearted smile as Eleanor refuses. "Pretty sure me'n Josie don't offend too easily..." She's trying to get back into that mood but... it's not working terribly well.

Penelope just flies into one of the glyphs, which makes Hannah frown, and Eleanor has a different solution. "Considerin' we're racin' the tides, I ain't eein' any reason why not."

Eleanor's spell reveals much about the order of the enchantments, and Hannah spends a few moments trying to work out the passcode from that, but seems to get stuck at one point. She's frowning and muttering as she looks at her notes and scribblings.

It's down to two choices, and as she keeps reworking the answer again and again she keeps flipflopping between them. And she seems to be having trouble focusing, for some reason.

And then she realizes the correct answer was actually C, the one Penelope flew into a moment ago. Her cheeks are red as she inputs the final sequence, causing a door to open up in the cave wall and slide aside, permitting them access.

It was very well disguised, it seems.

of a cave exposed only by the low tide: the sound of water rushing in.

Except, wait. Wait just a moment here. You haven't been /in/ here long
enough for the tide to be coming in at such speed that you can /hear/ the
roar -- or at least, you're pretty certain it couldn't have been long
  enough.

As you pick up the pace and round the bend, you'll find that this thought is
precisely correct: Muse Crestcaps stud the length of the tunnel ahead. It's
not the tide, it's a trap!

And it's going to catch up to you unless you run. Surely, if the Crestcaps
are here there must be some safe spot ahead?

<Pose Tracker> Josephine Lovelace has posed.

"Aye, I remember," she tells Hannah, reflecting back on the last time she'd seen the girl's magic go a little haywire. "Don't you worry none about it. I ain't touchin'."

"Well," Josie says, in response to Eleanor, "Fair enough."

Which in its own way presages the expression Josie has on her face when Penelope bonks into a glyph. On purpose. "You ok there, Penelope?" she asks of her constant companion, who has settled down to preen on the floor now that her job is complete. "Don't you mind her. She gets ideas in her head, sometimes," she tells Hannah. "And... that so? Hell of a place to abandon a kid. It ain't exactly safe all 'round there," she opines, the expression on her face taking a turn for the serious. "I'm from there myself, though I ain't been back proper-like in dogs years. Still... who knows? I used to play in the woods as a kid."

Even though none of them really, really were supposed to.

This may be Josie's way of offering her own aid.

"Trust me, I ain't the offendable sort," she says, before leaning against the wall. Leaving it to the two of them, Josie has a smoke while they work out the crests (and Penelope preens) until they come up with the answer. "That the one? Right, then, let's be on our way," she says, stepping on through the gap and heading forward.

She's not more than twenty steps past that point when a low roar begins to ring out into the tunnel. Pausing to listen to it, it takes her approximately a second to realize what's happening and she pales. "Tide's coming--

Wait. That can't be right. Racing forward at speed, she rounds a bend and sees the source of the problem: a series of Muse Crestcaps, glowing blue with sorcery. "Of all the shit-- goddammit! It's a trap!" she shouts, gesturing at the other girls to hurry her way. "We ain't going out how we came in! Only one way to go!"

They'll just have to hope there's something up ahead and not, say, a dead end.

She runs ahead, Penelope sailing past her on the wing.

<Pose Tracker> Eleanor Klein has posed.

Hannah explains; Josie, of course, was there for one occasion of Hannah's magic going out of whack... But even so, "You might not offend easily, but that's not the same as me actually saying them," Eleanor answers a little primly. But--

It's fine. They find their way, eventually. And Josie...

Josie is helping. So at least there's that. She doesn't join Josie for the smoke of course, but when the 'tide' starts to come in--

"Oh, dear. I'll go ahead and see if I can stop whatever it is!"

Eleanor, on cue, turns into an owl, and races forward.

"When we see a trap like this, if we can disrupt the Crest Cap then we can do away with the effect!"

She shoots after Penelope, her wings unfurled.

<Pose Tracker> Hannah Curie has posed.

Josie remembers... Oh, right. She was there, when the Witchbuster attacked...

Hannah sighs, shoulders sagging. "Supposin' somethin' like that ain't something you forget easily..."

She glances aside. Josie's seen the worst of her magic, so might as well share, especially if she's from the area. Her voice is kind of weary and small as she explains further. "Weren't exactly abandoned, see... I was found in a Mage's lab. The people what found me, didn't think nothing were wrong, but..." Hannah looks to Josie, and in that moment she's the 15-year-old girl who's been dealing with a strange problem that is ever so frustratingly out of reach. "We're tryin' to find the lab again. To see... if it can tell us anythin' about my magic."

"My big sister Suzie's--she was one of the ones that found me--she's been lookin' for it, but... it weren't exactly on a map to begin with, and that was twenty years ago." She pauses. "Twenty-one."

(Josie's probably run into Susanna Tanner if she's spent an appreciable amount of time in Damzen, a feline beastfolk woman who helps run the orphanage.)

She's kind of lost her mood for jocularity after explaining all that, and she looks to Eleanor tiredly. She catches that prim tone. "Sorry if I made you uncomfortable. I was just funnin' a little."

But something is happening, and when the sound of the tide starts to grow louder, Hannah frowns and pulls out a small, flat back ARM with rounded corners from her back. The screen lights up and shows the time. "Tide ain't due in again for at least another hour..."

But Zephyr's flown ahead with the others and through him Hannah can see the trouble-- "Aw, f--" She takes off running, using Zephyr's sight to avoid hitting any of the crest graphs with surprising grace that one might not expect of the sorceress.

<Pose Tracker> Josephine Lovelace has posed.

"It ain't, really," Josie tells Hannah, shaking her head as she shrugs wildly. "But it also ain't like... it's a big world out there, kiddo."

A mage's lab. "In a lab? Now that ain't --And none of the locals knew nothin' 'bout it?" Josie says, trying to do the math on Hannah's age and how long ago that would have been for her.

Twenty. No, twenty-one. So right before, around when Josie herself had flown the coup, as it were, and hit the road. "Wonder if that was before or after I left, now," she muses, closing her eyes and frowning as she thinks this one over carefully. "Damn, that's a hell of a story, kiddo..."

And worse, she can't remember for the life of her if she heard anything about it or not before she left.

The pleased-as-punch look on Josie's face in the wake of Eleanor's reaction says everything, doesn't it?

But that's before the false tide begins to roll in. Eleanor, in owl form, soars ahead of the two of them, just about racing Penelope to the finish line. "Hope you're right-- about that--" Josie gets out as she makes a mad dash towards the end. She can see the rushing wall of water behind them now. It's just a matter of moments between it catching them and their maybe-possibly escape. One more burst should do it--

And they get there. They reach that point past which the water rises no higher. But now what?

DG: Eleanor Klein has drawn a new Challenge.

Eleanor doesn't interfere with the explanation. But she does listen. She listens, and...

"...It's all right," Eleanor says to Hannah. "It's funny. I can do all sorts of improper things but I can't really talk about them..."

Oh well. But the tide isn't due, and--

They fly away! Unfortunately...

Still an owl, Eleanor says with a frowning sort of tone, "But you can't disarm a trap you can't get to," and turns back into an elf a moment later. "Well. That's inconvenient." A pause. "But we are past the wter for now, and... Hm...? It's walled up, but more recently. I wonder..."

Eleanor considers, and--

"Well, when there's a will, there's a way!" Eleanor's Power Bracelet glints in the dim, and she picks up a HUGE ROCK. She swings it right for the wall! It's a start!

DG: Eleanor Klein has used her Tool Power Bracelet toward her party's challenge, Breaking Through the Wall.
<Pose Tracker> Hannah Curie has posed.

Hannah shakes her head. "They weren't even lookin' for it, originally. They were onto somethin' else, found the lab by accident... they thought they wrecked it pretty good, didn't count on anybody ever needin' to go back, so..."

She shrugs a little to Josie's question of before or after. "Dunno. Don't remember much from back then. An' I only found out after... after what happened at Damzen." A hell of a story. She sighs and nods. "... yeah."

There's a half-hearted smile as Eleanor talks about doing certain improper things that she can't talk about. "... heh. Yeah, maybe best not."

But they outpace the artificial tide and find a moment reprieve, but-- Hannah glances behind them. "I don't like the way that water is risin'..."

A wall should be the least of Hannah's problems, but considering her magic troubles earlier...

She reaches for a pokeball from her bag and tosses it out. "Cassandra!" Out pops an Absol, a four-legged pokemon with white fur and a single, curved horn on her head.

"I need your help. Can you help break down the wall with your Doubled-Edge?"

"Ab!" calls the creature, and she charges forward, slashing at the brick and mortar with her horn.

DG: Hannah Curie has contributed a risky Brute Action toward her party's challenge, Breaking Through the Wall.
<Pose Tracker> Josephine Lovelace has posed.

"Well... sounds like it's time enough to ask," Josie says. And probably, time for her to make that long-deferred homecoming.

They made it! She takes but a moment to catch her breath, briefly leaning against the rock wall. "Yeah," Josie sighs at Eleanor as she regards the artificial wall of brick and mortar before them. "Tell me about it. Still, looks like the water ain't rising more, yeah?"

Squaring up against the wall, she pulls out that most trusty of archaeological tools: the MATTOCK.
...While it's true that Josie is not and never was an archaeologist, sometimes the dividing line between an archaeologist and a treasure hunter can be a fine one indeed.

And she'll follow up once Eleanor and Hannah's Absol have had their crack at it, swinging for the fences with a tool designed to smash stones and break rock.

DG: Josephine Lovelace has used her Tool Well-Used Mattock toward her party's challenge, Breaking Through the Wall.

  pirates in which case, fair).

Their abandoned gear is still in pretty good condition (mild weathering or
corrosion at most), but the real prize of the hour might be the chest shoved
up against one of the cave walls, heaping with gella coins and cut
  gemstones.

It's no legendary pirate treasure but perhaps you'll take it all the same!

<Pose Tracker> Eleanor Klein has posed.

Eleanor gives Hannah a sympathetic look. "..You'll find out," she says. "You'll learn."

Absol is helping! Eleanor admires the Pokemon's coat. And Josie's... actual intention to help. But as they all get to the wall--between Absol, the rock Eleanor hurls, and Josie's mattock, they not only break down the wall but break it down enough to get through--

And the evidence of piracy is plain to see soon, when they reach the secret hold. She does not mind not fighting the pirates. She looks over their gear, thoughtfully, for anything that might be useful--

But then, she spots the chest. "...Hmmm. It may or may not be of archeaological significance..."

"But it is shiny, I suppose!"
