Much of Cassidy's life before the last ten years has been shrouded in secrecy, though perhaps this isn't because of any true attempts to keep it as such but because of the fact that her exploits now tend to overshadow whatever came before. Irreverent, reckless, passionate, hedonistic and guaranteed to almost always press the red button or pick the "fun option" in every situation, accounts of her and what she does are varied at best: a charming con, a bold adventurer, an able thief, an experienced swordswoman, an excellent gunslinger...even a trained opera singer, she has traveled through many places and immersed herself in many cultures. She is just as adept at beguiling whole saloons with her musical talents as she is convincing someone that the sky is green, despite all evidence pointing to the contrary; she has prevailed in several high-profile duels, and has even burned down a convent in pursuit of a lusty affair. There doesn't seem to be any overarching goal in her life save to be as ludicrously entertaining as possible, and rack up as many crazy shenanigans as she can for no other end but to fill her life with color, because all other alternatives, to her, are drab and uninteresting. It is also extremely possible that she is running from or chasing something, but really, given the many, many distractions she provides, would anyone really care to look?

Background

At the moment, those who look into her would discover that she didn't exist beyond a decade ago - indicative enough that she's most definitely hiding something, a common enough circumstance with most of Filgaia's denizens that nobody will care.

This is precisely what she is counting on.

Powers and Abilities

Ten years of adventuring has made Cassidy Cain a situational chameleon out of necessity; she survives mostly because her ability to adapt to her present circumstances is downright genius and those who know her best (rare as they are) would claim that this is actually her foremost expertise. She is also rumored to be extremely lucky, given how many times she's managed to live through or prevail in impossible odds despite her seeming lack of bankable survival instincts. As stated by many of those who have tried to shuffle her out of the mortal coil in the last decade, the bitch just can't seem to die.

Save for her prodigious adaptability and being some kind of walking Fortune Elemental, she does know how to do a few things:

  • Swordsmanship - Nobody knows where she was trained, but the woman's skills with a blade speaks of a lifetime's worth of formal study and practice. This is typically the privilege of the military, or the wealthy, or both...and Cassidy Cain is, as far as people know, neither.
  • Gunslinging - She is just as adept with the gun as she is with a sword; she can use many kinds, and she can wield both barrel and blade at the same time, if circumstances make it necessary.
  • Polyglot - She is fluent in many languages in Filgaia, though whether this was a skill acquired through academics or pure immersion is unknown.
  • Ambidextrous - She can use both right and left hands with equal dexterity.
  • Performing Arts - She has spent several years with a traveling circus and troubadour troupe and that has expanded her particular list of skills to include singing, playing musical instruments, acrobatics (trapeze, high wire), trick riding and acting. She is a surprisingly accomplished stage singer and actress.
  • Master of Disguise - It comes hand in hand with her background as a performer, including certain skills in cosmetics and the use of prosthetics. She has adopted many personas over the years.
  • Master of the Confidence Game - The Pigeon Drop, Follow the Lady, and more. Cassidy is a walking encyclopedia in the art of the swindle. There are thieves, and there are master thieves and it's rare to find someone who knows more about the game than she does...so much so that she's known as "Long Con Cassidy" in some circles.
  • Good Ol' Fashioned Thievery - She's spent a few years safecracking, pick-pocketing, lock-picking and breaking and entering, though these days, she would rather convince someone to hand over his money than take it by force or subterfuge. Her preferences have not dulled her edge, however - her sleight-of-hand is flawless.
  • 12 Percent of a Plan - It's all she needs. There are several instances in Cassidy's life in which she has proven herself to be a formidable strategist and tactician, though God only knows where she learned those particular skills. Maybe from that life she never talks about beyond ten years ago.
  • Fortune Favors the Bold - And Cassidy's got some brass ones. Because she dares, she's amassed a significant fortune in her years as a con artist and adventurer. While she's not wealthy, she's certainly got enough capital to live comfortably in between con jobs and heists, and these days, she can afford to be picky about the jobs she undertakes.
  • Network of Contacts - Give a charming, shameless social creature like Cassidy ten years and this is what happens, a mental black book of people from all walks of life across the continent who owe her in some manner or another, and there are occasions in which she does collect.

Shenanigans: The 'Legend' of Long Con Cassidy

A running tally of the kind of nonsense this woman gets up to, just because she can. These are all just rumors and are completely unsubstantiated:

  • In her teens, she burned down a convent in Aquvy just to kidnap and elope with a nun she was infatuated with.
  • There was a period in her life when she did nothing but ride from town to town, challenging its most dangerous denizens to duels, and somehow survived every one.
  • Those in her community claim that she has died at least three times. Jinty McGuintie of the Last Resort claims this is bullshit and that she has only died once and horribly, but managed to come back anyway.
  • She was somehow responsible for Vin Barrett's likeness being published as a risque romance novella protagonist. Witnesses claim this involved a whorehouse shootout, and a very hairy naked man with lipstick hearts drawn around his nipples.
  • She was definitely responsible for Morgan Newkirk's twelve marriages, the latest being to Blackhand McCree. This is bound to get worse, now that Cassidy has a priest on call.
  • At Morgan's behest (and now the poor bastard owes her big), as part of ongoing his efforts to claim the Guildmaster seat in Adlehyde, she assisted him in ferreting out a duo of swindlers and thieves who have been targeting specific shipments of one of the Guild's longtime patrons by donning a false identity and participating in a game of Generals. At the end of it, she angered the only other woman at the table, let herself get set on fire, and used the ensuing chaos to rob all of her tablemates under their noses, but not before she got what she needed.
  • She caused the costly loss of several millions of gella in the form of currency, jewelry, art and antiquities bound for an auction house in Lacour after she set two bandit gangs against one another when they tried to take the same train. God only knows what the hell she had been after at the time, but it ended with her and Jude Moshe dangling off a ravine, with the High Noon Express' storage cars sinking in to the Blue Adlehyde River.
  • A little over a week after the Derailment of the High Noon Express, she orchestrated the sinking of the riverboat casino Mamma Mia, the pride and joy of gambling mogul and shipping magnate Sonny Carillo, said to have a plethora of shady connections and a mean streak several miles wide.

Rogues Gallery

Mug Shot Name Relation Information
Judeicon2.jpg Jude Moshe Definitely a Huge Mistake Cassidy's partner, a traveling correspondent for the Guild Gazette and more connected to her than either of them know; the rare soul that could match the fast-paced silver of her tongue, and who claims to be a former priest. While they are indubitably a study in contrasts, one would almost expect Jude Moshe's cool indifference and lackadaisical attitude to be a tempering influence on the woman's troublemaking ways...except he's actually the worst enabler of her shenanigans alive, all too willing to let her cause her chaos and see what happens. Despite these differences, they've managed to find the kind of easy camaraderie and instinctive anticipation of the other's movements that often take years to develop, though it doesn't protect Jude from Cassidy's proactive methods in sabotaging what they have; she treats their conversations like duels of wit, she nearly gets him killed every other day, she constantly demonstrates a lack of respect for his personal space, she has attempted to ditch him on several instances and she does not apologize for any of it. But the harder she tries, the more dogged and persistent Jude becomes, and it is difficult to resist the company of a man who will literally bleed out just to stick around and steal a string of pearls from a falling train to give to her while doing so. Made evident by how said string of bloodstained pearls has become a daily part of her ensemble, she is in no way immune to that kind of dedication...and that is precisely the problem.
Morganicon.jpg Morgan Newkirk Adventurers Guild Contact It's inevitable that after ten years of adventuring that Cassidy would run into some of the same faces over and over again. Morgan is one such visage; her occasional role as an independent contractor to a few of the guilds in Filgaia means that she and this part-Beastman have worked several jobs together on different occasions, and were in fact rivals for some of them - a fact that has not, thankfully, gotten in the way of their usual camaraderie. Lighthearted, reckless and with a sense of humor to match, it's not surprising that she gets along with this aspiring Guildmaster. That doesn't stop her from messing with him, though. In fact she only interprets this as a carte blanche to mess with him as much as possible, like when she convinced an entire bar that Morgan wanted to marry Blackhand and even offered Jude up to officiate the ceremony.
Noahicon2.jpg Noah Hawthorne THIS FOOKIN GUY PENDING
Barticon.jpg Bartholomew Fatima Not Boss God only knows why Cassidy accepted Captain Fatima's provisional invitation to join the Yggdrasil Alliance, his motley crew of rogues vehemently against the Kislev/Aveh war (and makes that fact known through a variety of violent heists and explosions), as always a creature driven by her present whims. She has been tentatively admitted in the fold but not without certain conditions of her own, namely that i) she is a package deal, and her membership also means Jude Moshe's involvement in the outfit, and ii) she gets to plan one of the most ambitious heists in her long career as a master thief - the taking of Aveh's royal treasury from under the nose of its current bloodthirsty Prime Minister. While Bart has doubts about where her loyalties lie or her level of commitment, and with very good reason as he's not an idiot, the last condition alone may very well be the thing that anchors her fate to Bart's. While she anticipates some rough patches, as the two of them are very different people, she is, at the very least, confident in their respective levels of adult-ness to be able to compromise when need be.
Leonicon.jpg Leon Albus Mark Soft-hearted. Honorable. Efficient. Straightforward. After baiting him into a snare, it took just one afternoon and a brief, but significant conversation for Cassidy to learn that Leon Albus, formerly of the Kislev military, is everything she is not; a fact that is endlessly fascinating to her because she knows that they came from similar places, and that they have more in common than he, or anyone else, suspects. With her personal interest duly earned, it is up in the air as to whether she feels strongly enough about it to let it get in the way of Jude's own personal interest in capturing Leon and his bird. Given this is Cassidy, her status as Fortune's favorite whipping post ensures that it's a toss of the coin either way.
Lilyicon.jpg Lily Keil Mark's Bird A stone-cold professional, anyone would expect Lily Keil to be a hard nut to crack, but that is precisely what Cassidy did when she 'accidentally' ran into her at a local tailor's shop by pretending to deliver an engagement ring meant for her to Leon, which inevitably caused an embarrassing situation for the sorceress. The later conversation yielded a few bits of information from the otherwise taciturn young woman: an orphan, a medic who had enough education in the field to be a doctor, if she wanted, once a part of Kislev's special forces and that she and Leon Albus were childhood friends...and that she had wanted to marry him since she was eleven years old. While her current relationship with Jude's mark and their present situation resonate, touching parts of her that she has tried to bury deep, it's difficult to determine whether Cassidy cares enough to get in Jude's way about them.
Vinicon.jpg Vin Barrett Some Poor Bastard An encounter with Cassidy outside of a house of ill-repute triggered Vin Barrett's stupid useless compassion, which dovetailed into a series of ridiculous circumstances that ended with Vin being placed on the book cover of the latest novella of the scandalously risque Rough Riders romance stories (which, in turn, placed him in hot water with his aunt, a respected Baskar shaman) as the face of one of its protagonists, Jack Dove, who is, because this is how Cassidy's life rolls, in turn based on someone else she's met. While gruff and jagged around the edges, he proved himself to be a tremendous gentleman. While Cassidy would never admit it, what he revealed about himself - details on the pressures his family placed on him, of wanting to leave the colony to see the world and make his own way - struck a chord, and she ended up exhibiting some stupid useless compassion of her own by breaking in a local convenience store so she could stitch him up. Said efforts to see to his injuries ended up with him looking more like an art project than anything, but she tried.
Thomasicon.jpg Thomas St. Croix ??? The cold, cunning, reprehensibly efficient spymaster of Queen Zephyr I of Shevat, and rumored to be just as exacting as a father to six accomplished sons in Shevat's military. What he's doing in Cassidy's rogues gallery is a mystery.
Jerryicon.jpg Jeremiah Black A Dead Man The ruthless captain of the Mercy Killers, a brutal and surprisingly savvy group of criminals who murder, rape, and pillage with impunity all over Filgaia. Under his leadership, which he wrested from his father by force, the group has started branching out from highway banditry to more sophisticated operations in the last couple of years. While taking lives is never high up in Cassidy's priorities, Jerry has found himself at the top of the very short list of people she intends not just to see dead, but to do so with her own hands....unusual enough, given the woman generally doesn't seem to hold grudges and has a tendency to maintain friendly relations even with rivals. He is rumored to have a very rare, very powerful ARM.
Theresaicon.jpg Theresa Kilcannon (nee Devivre) Greatest Regret Once a famous actress and considered a grande dame of sorts in the world of traveling stages, Theresa Kilcannon met her bloody end along with her beloved troupe of carnies and fellow thespians in the deserts of Filgaia three years ago. In many ways, her loss is one of the few things left in the world that keeps Cassidy going.
Bridgeticon.jpg Bridget Myles Always Cassidy often considers herself more of a force of nature than woman, but those who know her best would tell anyone that the parts of her that are still capable of human emotion are mostly attributed to her former partner-in-crime, Bridget Myles, who helped her run their Hilton-based group of swindlers and thieves. She died of a rare blood disorder seven years ago; in honor of her memory, Cass adopted her accent as a way to keep her alive.

The Black Book

Cassidy Cain has a relatively wide network of contacts in Filgaia, so it's not surprising that she turns to some of them regularly for things she somehow can't acquire herself. This is a running list of recurring NPCs in her stories.

  • Crenshaw Worth - A young genius mathematician and cardsharp, who spent his early life under the domineering thumb of a mother who wanted to exploit his talents. Despite his age, he is known as 'the Champion' in some of the most illustrious gambling circuits in Filgaia. He used to run these circuits with Cassidy in Nortune when he was just twelve years old. First appearance in The Quick and the Damned.
  • Darren Dove - A middle-aged man with a photographic memory and once had aspirations as an artist. Currently clerks for a major bank in Hilton, in the Kingdom of Lacour. He was once part of the small, tight-knit bunch of cons that Cassidy led with a woman named Bridget Myles, running confidence games all over, but abandoned it for a more stable life with his wife, who, unsurprisingly, fosters a contentious relationship with Cassidy and therefore complicates his own relationship with her. First mentioned in The Art of the Swindle.
  • Ethan Ethan - Yes, that's actually his name, thanks to the fateful day his drunken father attempted to deliver his birth certificate to the local census bureau. He has a specific knack for navigating difficult terrain on anything with wheels and was once part of the same group as Darren Dove. His current occupation is unknown. First mentioned in The Art of the Swindle.
  • Jinty McGuintie - The large, gruff, cantankerous (but covertly paternal) bartender and proprietor of the Last Resort, a popular after-hours watering hole in Hilton. He holds the specific distinction as the most honest man Cassidy has ever known, and infamously cursed for having five gorgeous daughters. He has mourned his dead wife for close to five years. For reasons that have yet to be revealed, there is nothing Cassidy would not do for him if he asks. First appearance in The Saint of Last Resort.

* Main Theme: My Way - Dorothy Squires (originally by Frank Sinatra)

Regrets, I've had a few;
But then again, too few to mention.
I did what I had to do
And saw it through without exemption.

I planned each charted course;
Each careful step along the byway,
But more, much more than this,
I did it my way.

Yes, there were times, I'm sure you knew
When I bit off more than I could chew.
But through it all, when there was doubt,
I ate it up and spit it out.
I faced it all and I stood tall;
And did it my way.

I've loved, I've laughed and cried.
I've had my fill; my share of losing.
And now, as tears subside,
I find it all so amusing.

To think I did all that;
And may I say - not in a shy way,
"Oh no, oh no not me,
I did it my way".

Dedications

There's a shark in the pool
And a witch in the tree
A crazy old neighbour and he's been watching me
And there's footsteps loud and strong coming down the hall
Something's under the bed
Now it's out in the hedge
There's a big black crow sitting on my window ledge
And I hear something scratching through the wall
What should I do, I'm just a little baby
What if the lights go out, and maybe
I just hate to be all alone
Outside the door he followed me home
Now goodnight moon
I want the sun
If it's not here soon
I might be done
No it won't be too soon 'till I say
Goodnight moon

There must be some kind of way outta here
Said the joker to the thief
There's too much confusion, now
I can't get no relief
No reason to get excited
The thief he kindly spoke
There are many here among us
Who feel that life's but a joke
But you and I, we've been through that
And this is not our fate
So let us stop talkin' falsely now
The hour's getting late

Would you be happy if I cried sometimes?
You know I
Sit in the dark and I try
I try
But I can't make a sound until the morning comes
My head is dumb and my heart is dry
And some things cannot be fixed
And you shall see
Just wrap it up in news prints and just give it back to me
You know
The craziest of things
Was that I wanted it
I thought I did
You know
The moment I liked best
Was when you put your hands around my head
But that won't make it easier to stand
And that won't make it right
You're so good at denying everything
But to nothing right
But it won't make you happy at all
