Lily is a potent wielder of Ether, a sorceress of significant power and startling control.  Her power lets her summon columns of flame, great lances of ice, and raw blasts of pure destructive power. It also allows her to heal wounds and support her allies through uses abstract and otherwise of her primary elements.  She adapts her magic to allow her to fight in close quarters when necessary, which tends to be in the right kind of fight.
Lily Keil is a trained commando, a devoted medic, and a powerful sorceress.  Her time in training and at war has made her a skilled combatant, and she isn't shy about putting that knowledge to use.  This involves a good knowledge of weaponry, stealth, survival techniques, and general soldiering... but her real power is in her magic.

Her primary elements are fire, ice, and darkness, with darkness being the one she manipulates with the most facility of allThree is already significant for an Ether-wielder, and she handles all of them with fine control and enough speed to use them as shields in a pinch.
Lily is frighteningly powerful magically, and seemingly very casual in the exercise of that power.  She can cast devastating spells that cause wide swaths of destruction with seeming ease, all without reliance on any known Symbols or Crests--or, for that matter, any formal training whatsoever.  To those who recognize it, Lily's abilities use Ether, but in a way entirely different from Gebler's practices while still being clearly sorcerous, and indeed she casts on a level with the elite Ether wielders of SolarisShe doesn't follow the standard elemental patterns, doesn't shape the same magical constructs to guide her spells, and is able to casually control forces that some might have to train for years to bring forth.  On the other hand, her defense against other magic lacks formal tools, and relies more on raw magical force than anything.  More dangerously, sometimes her magic will work on her feelings rather than her intentions, and she has learned to keep constant focus in order to prevent her power slipping from her control.

Lily's magic is sufficiently destructive that it can effectively harm Gear-scale opponents; her power, simply, is to destroy things in a variety of waysUnfortunately, there are those who would hunt her for same.
Her magic can be reasonably divided into four elemental categories, some of which come more naturally to her than others.  Her most potent and flexible is Dark magic, and she's nearly as adept with Fire.  She also learned to invert her Fire into Ice, and more recently to oppose her Darkness with Light.  Her spells are unusual, though; those with advanced knowledge of science may recognize certain concepts in her magic, and she definitely uses unconventional manifestations of her elements.  She can use darkness not just to manipulate shadow, but to outright unmake matter or deaden senses.  She can wield Ice, but has no facility at all for Water.  She can heal with the Fire element, but not with others.  Meanwhile her Light spells manifest largely as an overwhelming nuclear flame that leaves great destruction in its wake.  Some of her spells are even of sufficient scale to damage Gear-sized targets more than someone on foot should be able.  In combat, Lily primarily operates with great bursts of power, conjured weapon-shaped magical effects, and occasional invocation of support effectsDespite its efficacy, though, there is to some senses simply something very wrong about her magic, something strange and unnatural.

Aside from her magic, Lily is a trained commando and medic, expert in skills such as stealth, basic hand to hand combat, marksmanship, various medical skills, and demolitions.  She makes use of her demolition abilities in dungeons, as well as her notes on previous obstaclesShe's also handled Gears, though she was primarily an infantrywoman and a combat medic.  She's particularly good at stitches.  She's an adept second-in-command, though she prefers not to lead.
Aside from her magic, Lily is a trained commando, expert in skills such as stealth, basic hand to hand combat, marksmanship, leadership, combat engineering, and demolitions.  She can fix and drive cars, and when she has the supplies regularly makes use of explosives with sufficient precision to be practical on DigsHer experience also helps her in problem-solving generally, and she is an adept Gear pilot, though in the army she was an infantrywoman primarily--and her true specialty is medicine.  She's particularly good with stitches, but is capable of surgery with limited supplies under harsh conditions, and has experience in treating a variety of ailments, infections, and conditions.  With a little more training, she could have been a full doctor; as it is, her expertise is more useful in trauma situations than day to day medical needsLily in theory has the training to lead, as a former officer in the Kislevi army, but she prefers the role of second-in-command when she has the choice.

Lily has gained access to an additional element in time; practiced and unleashed specifically to escape Gebler custody and Loren Voss, Lily now makes use of something like a strange version of the Light element:  nuclearIt shows as golden fire, and can poison or sap foes, destroy defenses, and use an enemy's energy against him.
In addition to magic, Lily makes use of ARMs in combat. She's trained in a variety, and in the war favored longarms such as her personal rifle, but is also adept with pistols and a few more exotic armaments--including explosives.  Her weapon of choice at this time is the Lycoris RM-81, a heavy revolver she acquired on her travels that dates to the Day of Collapse.  Its red-and-black, bulky form is distinctive, but relevant to its use is the fact that it is more durable and reloads more quickly than most guns of its type.  The fact that it uses high-caliber ammunition and leaves a hand free makes it perfect for Lily's preferences at the momentSometimes her magic is overtaxed, or she faces a foe resistant to sorcery; at these times, it's important to have other options.

She makes use of ARMs in combat as well, particularly if she needs to conserve magical energy or is facing a foe against whom her magic is not ideal.
In terms of hand-to-hand combat, Lily is less effective when not relying on her magic to supplement her strikes, but she is a trained boxer.  In addition, she is experienced in an approach to longsword fencing called the Kislev Six Hews Style, which she came to practice in order to help her partner, Leon Albus, practice his swordwork.  She knows only two of its perfected strokes, and makes use of its sweeping two-handed strikes primarily via conjured swords of darkness, rather than the physical skill and bursts of chi its true practice involves.  In turn, many of her most useful combat spells were developed in training against him.

She also has access to a strange transformation.
Her dog, Dog, is trained specifically to keep her composure and support Lily and others as needed, and accompanies Lily most of the time.  Dog is a mid-sized canine, agile and tough, who can harry opponents or help to guard allies, but perhaps more notable is that she's intelligent enough to pick up and deliver--or even use--combat restoratives.  Dog's skill will grow with time--who knows how far she can go?  For now she's at least an extra pair of eyes and ears and a solid nose to watch her mistress's back.

Relationships
Lily has a few other, stranger abilities though, even compared to her unusual sorcery.  These aren't common knowledge about her, but aren't exactly secrets, either.  One is that she seems to heal fully from any injury that doesn't kill her without scar.  Another is that her magic is accompanied by strange markings on her body that resemble the trails of circuits, colored strangely in ways that change with the use of her powers, among other strange effects. Finally, there is the transformation.

Him
In battle, Lily is capable of drawing on additional force, albeit at a toll on her body.  Drawing in energy from around herself, Lily's markings shift to track a set of lines up part of her face, coloring a shock of her hair, and form spectral wings from her back.  Her eyes blacken, and her irises and pupils are replaced by shifting colors similar to those of her markings.  Finally, she tends to float a few feet off the ground, obviously suffused with power, capable of rapid flight.  This form has strange effects on her magic, the first of which is that the scale of her spells increases significantly, easily able to affect a far wider area and threatening even to Gear-sized opponents.  It's not only more powerful, but more direct; she doesn't merely make fire, but can transmute the air itself /into/ fire; she can conjure huge weaponry of the elements she wields and swing them casually.  She can combine elements, with effort, and is capable of manipulating life force, turning it against a foe to reopen wounds or even draining it to empower herself.  Most strangely, the transformation involves odd intonations in the Zeboim language.

* Leon Albus: EverythingWhat she did to get them both away is still worth itAs long as she can stay with him, anything else is bearable.
Occasionally this transformation will happen on its own, without Lily's direction. Sometimes, it's worseRegardless, the toll on her body is significantWhile she's as capable of healing from it as anything else, it takes even more energy than usual castings, and causes internal damage that can manifest in bleeding from the eyes, ears, or nose.  Overuse could risk losing control of it, or worse.

Associates
She tends to carry a reasonable complement of equipment; her ARM, some basic healing supplies including bandages and disinfectant, explosives if she can find them.  A few things are specifically notable, though:  her combat knife from the war, and a set of rune-inscribed chains that can be wrapped about her hand.  If she channels her magic through these runes, she can significantly increase the effect of her spells.  Another is a simple, small mirror.  Its alchemical treatments allow it to stand up to the force of Lily's magic, and thus she can use her magic with the mirror to achieve a variety of useful effects.  It is a gift from Riesenlied's daughter Mikaia, and highly valuable to Lily.  She also has a Medium of the Sea Guardian, Lucadia, that she keeps on her person even now that the Guardians have been forced to be more distant with Mother's awakening... and a Nisan cross, which is of no combat value but important to her all the same.

* Bart Fatima: Lily started on a single job with Bart, and that's turned over time to joining his crew when she isn't busy with her own mission, a medical officer aboard the Yggdrasil and known by many nicknames among the men.  Most of them don't reach her ears.  She's become fond of him--fond enough to give him shit--and she thinks what he wants to do is worthwhile.  She's willing to call him out on a bad idea... But she's just as willing to lead the way with him on something crazy, or provide a more deliberate eye than his tends to be.  It's good to have a good working relationship; it makes her feel better.
Relationships
* Fei Fong Wong: This boy actually called her his friend.  He's complicated; he has a lot going on with him, and some of it Lily finds familiar, and some merely sympathetic.  She knows some of the looks in his eyes, the difficulties she has, and she's both protective of him and willing to rely on him.  She trusts him, and as she said to Fei herself, trust means that if he ever puts a knife in her ribs then it will have been worth it.

* Jacqueline Barber: A positive relationship, and Lily's personal favorite apothecary, who prescribes the only medicine that lets Lily sleep anymore.  She's nice, and Lily has her working on other projects as well as best she's able... though Jay refuses to be charged for this one.  Lily has trusted her with plenty of secrets already, and would like to help her further in return if she can.  If nothing else she's good company.

* Josephine Lovelace: Josie drives Lily nuts, and Lily adores her.  She shouldn't trust this quickly, but she does. She knows secrets of this woman's and Josie knows secrets of hers, and Josie's never going to entirely escape being Lily's patient so long as they're together.  Josie might be a bad influence on the younger Lily... But Lily doesn't mind something a little less dour now and then.

* Jude Moshe:  Lily was furious with Jude, and then he helped her.  Then he disappeared, and then he saved her life facing of against Siegfried and a strange man with red hair.  Everything he did was entirely fine; he helped her rest, he got her a doctor, just like when he helped her before in a matter she still keeps secret.  This is all after he tried to capture her and Leon both.  In short, Lily finds him entirely confusing, but is forced to conclude that she's able to trust him more than she would expect.  She isn't entirely comfortable with it, but it's true.  What does it really want?  Either way, she owes him a debt, and she'll pay it.

* Lunata Croze: This girl is adorable and this girl is also trouble.  Lunata knows a few things about Lily, and Lily feels that it was worthwhile to tell her and her mother both.  There's a lot more to Lunata than it would seem to most.  Lily's attempted to take a bit of responsibility for teaching her some things she might need, though that doesn't stop her from enjoying Lunata's cooking when she has the chance.  Good home cooking is something she's not going to turn down.  But what is the nature of Ge Ramda...?  It's Lunata's right to join what may be a war, but Lily hopes it doesn't break her.

* Riesenlied: Extremely complicated.  They became on good terms back before the invasion of Adlehyde, finding much in common with one another and much to discuss.  Lily found she had more in common with Riesenlied than she would have imagined, both then and when they would fight during the Invasion.  Riesenlied is her brighter mirror, the brilliant light to Lily's all-encompassing gloom.  She's fairly certain that the Metal Demon is a better person than she is.  If she really can achieve this peace, that's well and good, but Lily has little hope of it.  She won't try to stop her though; she has no reason to do that.

* Anna: Agatha Pyrelight's alias, Anna is a woman Lily has gotten to know over time, who seemed largely ordinary except for a few unusual features, and now seems much the same but stronger, possessed of a powerful aura.  Lily has concerns for her safety as a rule, but they may be unfounded these days.  This woman is an important confidant, and the primary source of Lily's information outside herself and scattered notes on Malevolence.  She has given Lily encouragement to experiment with its power, and advice as to how to control it rather than be overwhelmed.  Whether or not this is a good idea, however...

Acquaintances

* Cassidy Cain: In some ways confusing, and in some ways not; Lily has a lot of questions about this woman, but finds her stories believable.  Most of her suspicions are smoothed over by the fact that their meeting was incredibly embarrassing and that Leon seems to have a favorable impression of her.  It may yet prove to be a dangerous lapse in her guard.  In the meantime Lily legitimately enjoyed talking with Cassidy, as unusual as that is for her.

* Hiro: So naive that he seriously gets on Lily's nerves, mostly because she thinks he's a good kid and likely to get himself killed for it most anytime here.  She has a standing intention to have a boxing match with him.  Really, openly helping the enemy?  Even if he is already a traitor...

* Lucia: Fascinating, on many levels.  Lily doesn't find her demeanor particularly off-putting, but she is very interested in her magic.  She doesn't know her terribly well, but she's not especially certain how best to change that, if at all.  Sympathetic to her cause, regardless, so long as it doesn't get in the way of her own.

* Noeline:  Lily respects Noeline.  The Crimson Noble proved herself competent before, and now that she's aware she's a Metal Demon she can understand her positions in this conflict.  She may still have to fight her, but Lily doesn't intend to seek it out.  It's unusual to speak to someone who's lived centuries as far as Lily is aware.

* Shalune Amira: A troublemaker, but a pleasant troublemaker.  She means well, and intends to protect Lunata, and has a fascinating affinity for machines.  Lily's seen her at work in small settings.  She likes her; she's smart, analytical, and even if she can be a little silly, it's not wrong for a girl her age to be that way.  She's talented regardless.  She has concerns for her.

* Sephilia Lampbright: A very decent nurse, one willing to follow instructions.  Would work with again.  Still won't hug that doll.

* Virginia Maxwell: Lily has concerns about Virginia, but can't deny her abilities.  A lot of concerns.  Would work with again, though.  Is unaware of her nature as a Hellion.

Enemies

* Gryndille: The automaton that killed the Black Wolves.  Lily will destroy it, no matter what.  If that involves understanding it first, then so be it, but she's been honing her magic for this confrontation since her failure that day.

* Thomas Blackwell: An alias of Loren Voss, this boy as far as Lily knows is a medical student from Bledavik.  He's also a total asshole, irritating to deal with, knows how to grab a wound and squeeze it, and has information useful to her and something in common with her.  She's not going to kill him, but she doesn't need to be nice to him either, even if she ends up more vulnerable than she'd like in his presence.

“That's not my problem.”

Lily Keil is the second-in-command and medic of the Black Wolves, an indepenent mercenary company that formed in the wake of an attempt on Prime Minister Shakhan's life, and one of two survivors of an elite Kislevi commando team of the same name. She was accused of high treason and espionage when displaying her secret Ether abilities, but her status as regards her home nation is in dispute since an effort to save the Kaiser himself... from her own father. She is known now as a dangerous, violent woman of unpredictable sorcerous power, an outspoken enemy of Gebler and a skeptic of conventional government. Her presence at an engagement is an almost sure sign of significant collateral damage, and she seems to show no hesitation to kill those sent in her path. Her occasional cooperation with some authority, support for those Metal Demon refugees who claim to seek peace, and continued presence in attempting to save the world on behalf of the Guardians all call her overall goals into question. More worryingly, she's been sighted at some battles effecting a transformation into some inhuman form that only increases her magical abilities. The simple truth is that war and the loss of her comrades has affected Lily deeply, and she will go to extreme lengths to keep safe her partner and Captain, Leon Albus--along with the others who have worked their way into her loyalties now.

Background

Raised in Kislev after her adoption by a childless military family in Nortune, Lily Keil doesn't even remember a world before her new parents, and remembers nothing of the reconnaissance mission that saw her father, Dietrich Keil, lead soldiers to where she turned out to be. She had a difficult time adjusting to the new environment, but in time began to see Nortune as the only home she had ever known. She continued to have difficulty interacting with her peers, however, for many reasons. The first was her personality, but the second was the secret her parents helped her hide: she was gifted with a form of magic wholly unfamiliar to most. If she did not hide, she would be taken away from her family. For a girl whose whole world was her parents and their house, this was a terrible possibility.

Leon Albus, a boy only slightly older than she was, was the first to whom she let slip her secret, and his amazed reaction captured her heart early. They would become fast friends, preparing together to enter the Nortune Military Academy, and when she came of age she joined as well, as she'd intended. She succeeded wildly, second in her class behind Leon even with the extra work they put in practicing her magic and her multiple fields of study, focusing on medicine like her mother. She also proved a fairly popular girl, well-liked even before her father's promotions factored in. Internally, she knew this sociability was because of her time with Leon learning to better deal with people. She learned better to deal with Leon too; they didn't end the Academy as only friends.

Both would prove effective soldiers; her wide capabilities made up for her lesser combat capabilities as compared to the stronger Leon, and while she lacked leadership inclinations she had analysis and insight in spades. She could not save all of her patients, but no one can. When they were promoted to the Wolves, now First Lieutenant Keil accepted the position as Captain Albus's second in command. They would strike many blows against Aveh and save many Kislevi soldiers over time. War was hard on her in other ways; she hardened, and most of her progress socially was reversed except in bedside manner. Now and then, Lily was forced to use her magic to protect herself and Leon, but never in front of the rest of their unit.

And then they were attacked by Gryndille. Their entire squad, save for Lily and Leon, was killed, and Lily pouring out every mote of magic she could muster did nothing. She could not save them. The soldiers who came across them wanted to arrest them as traitors... and after that day, they would want Lily Keil, sorceress, as a Gebler spy as well.

They went to Adlehyde as Drifters and fugitives. On the run, Lily would watch out for the both of them. From there, Lily's opinion of conventional governments in general have only cooled; while she could have made a home in Adlehyde, the invasion of the Metal Demons would derail that possibility and send Lily even further back into her wartime habits.

Chapter 1, Act 1

Lily adapted poorly to civilian life, becoming quieter and more withdrawn, discarding much besides her need for vengeance. But this is also when she met many people who would become important to her in the coming days, though not in the ways she would've expected at the time. She began work as a Drifter, became accustomed to travelling in dungeons, and first encountered Malevolence in Port Timney. The infection of it that she would contract began in a dirty cavern, at a blood-soaked altar. It was with the Yggdrasil Alliance that she began to act as part of a group again. And it was in these days that war came to Adelhyde, and destroyed the peace she'd started to find. In the journey west, however, she would find a new mission.

Skills, Powers and Abilities

Lily Keil is a trained commando, a devoted medic, and a powerful sorceress. Her time in training and at war has made her a skilled combatant, and she isn't shy about putting that knowledge to use. This involves a good knowledge of weaponry, stealth, survival techniques, and general soldiering... but her real power is in her magic.

Lily is frighteningly powerful magically, and seemingly very casual in the exercise of that power. She can cast devastating spells that cause wide swaths of destruction with seeming ease, all without reliance on any known Symbols or Crests--or, for that matter, any formal training whatsoever. To those who recognize it, Lily's abilities use Ether, but in a way entirely different from Gebler's practices while still being clearly sorcerous, and indeed she casts on a level with the elite Ether wielders of Solaris. She doesn't follow the standard elemental patterns, doesn't shape the same magical constructs to guide her spells, and is able to casually control forces that some might have to train for years to bring forth. On the other hand, her defense against other magic lacks formal tools, and relies more on raw magical force than anything. More dangerously, sometimes her magic will work on her feelings rather than her intentions, and she has learned to keep constant focus in order to prevent her power slipping from her control.

In combat, Lily primarily operates with great bursts of power, conjured weapon-shaped magical effects, and occasional invocation of support effects. Despite its efficacy, though, there is to some senses simply something very wrong about her magic, something strange and unnatural.

Aside from her magic, Lily is a trained commando, expert in skills such as stealth, basic hand to hand combat, marksmanship, leadership, combat engineering, and demolitions. She can fix and drive cars, and when she has the supplies regularly makes use of explosives with sufficient precision to be practical on Digs. Her experience also helps her in problem-solving generally, and she is an adept Gear pilot, though in the army she was an infantrywoman primarily--and her true specialty is medicine. She's particularly good with stitches, but is capable of surgery with limited supplies under harsh conditions, and has experience in treating a variety of ailments, infections, and conditions. With a little more training, she could have been a full doctor; as it is, her expertise is more useful in trauma situations than day to day medical needs. Lily in theory has the training to lead, as a former officer in the Kislevi army, but she prefers the role of second-in-command when she has the choice.

The fact that it uses high-caliber ammunition and leaves a hand free makes it perfect for Lily's preferences at the moment. Sometimes her magic is overtaxed, or she faces a foe resistant to sorcery; at these times, it's important to have other options.

Occasionally this transformation will happen on its own, without Lily's direction. Sometimes, it's worse. Regardless, the toll on her body is significant. While she's as capable of healing from it as anything else, it takes even more energy than usual castings, and causes internal damage that can manifest in bleeding from the eyes, ears, or nose. Overuse could risk losing control of it, or worse.
