"Seek the new world, my brethren. Let us create a new home that we can flourish in!"

Riesenlied is one of the older Metal Demons in the Photosphere, second only to the veterans of the Metal Demon Wars and the Quarter Knights. She is the commander of the Metal Demons' Ebony Wings division, an elite unit of Metal Dragon-riding knights that serve as their aerial cavalry and bombardier unit. Riesenlied's charismatic presence and Dragon-riding skills have garnered much respect and trust from her Dragoons, who call her "Dark Angel". She is a veteran of many Metal Demon campaigns, most recently participating in the raid of Arctica Castle two years ago. Riesenlied highly values honour and integrity, and despises deception and terror, never incorporating them into her battlefield strategy or tactics. She despises wanton cruelty and carries her missions out with strategic and bloody precision, a divide in philosophy that has spawned many rumours about the tension between her and her Metal Demon peers.

Background

Humans

The Drifter known as Riese does not share much of her past, only saying that she is merely from a very far away away. She claims to be a Beastman from a distant land, which may explain her wings and horns, which she frequently attempts to hide. The reticence she has about herself seems to have been brought about by possible discrimination against her physical features.

Metal Demons

Riesenlied was born as far back as 79 PC, to a time when living metal was at a dire shortage. Demons produced during this year were of particularly defective quality due to impurities found in the batch, leading to a sizeable number of Demons to become branded as the Tainted. Though she does not speak much about it, many other elder demons are often quick to comment how she was, and still is, a demon of inferior quality -- something that is often used against her in demon politics.

The Tainted are demons without much of the advantages of metal demons -- they have strength, agility and endurance only comparable to that of a human's, instead of the greatly enhanced ones of Metal Demons. They're often 'stuck' in their form and unable to transform like other metal demons; depending on the deformity, this makes it impossible for them to blend in with other demons. The Tainted were treated as little better than Metal Beasts during their time.

Riesenlied is the commander of the Ebony Wings, an elite division within the Metal Demons' hierarchy, and owner of the Ebony Roost, a facility within the Photosphere that is dedicated to producing elite Metal Dragons. Currently, she's largely cut off from the both of them -- management is largely delegated to other members of the Ebony Wings back home, and the Roost has always had its own staff of experts as Riesenlied is not a scientist, but largely serves as a stakeholder and planner in the future of the Roost.

Riesenlied's accomplishments include leading the Tainted as an impromptu scouting unit, eventually discovering a large cache of superior dragon fossils that they hauled back in 80 PC, ending the living metal shortage and allowing the impurities to be engineered out.

In 389 PC, the Ebony Wings joined with the Metal Demons when the Veruni assaulted them. The Photosphere came under massive siege, one that pierced its forcefield and damaged the ship's structure. Riesenlied collaborated with the Quarter Knights, and led the Ebony Wings to charge the mountains and create a snow avalanche that split the Veruni forces clean in half. Even divided, it was only with the combined efforts of all the Demon's forces that they repelled the Veruni and defended their home from destruction.

In 497 PC, the Ebony Wings participated in the assault of Arctica Castle -- a lightning assault that was preceded by the long-range bombardment of the castle's siege weapons and fortified walls, allowing for the Demons' ground forces to infiltrate and overwhelm the rest of the castle's defenders.

Powers and Abilities

  • Leadership and Charisma - More than anything else, Riesenlied is known for her ability to inspire and lead others; it is what brought about her rise to fame from nothingness, and leadership in the face of physical weakness was what made the Tainted go to where they are now. She is experienced and versed at mentoring younger Demons and finding ways to make them excel and reach their potential.
  • Swordsmanship - Though Riesenlied's strength may pale to her more powerful peers, the technique she has refined over the centuries has made her a swordswoman to be rightfully feared. Riesenlied uses mundane human swords under cover.
  • Dragon Riding - Riesenlied, like the other Ebony Wings, compensates for her weakness through unity and teamwork with her Dragon. When Riesenlied rides Odjn into battle, the two are able to become more than they are alone.

Weaknesses

  • Magic - Like many other metal demons, Riesenlied does not tolerate magic very well, and Crest Sorcery and Symbology both have effective means to disrupt her physiology. Healing magic also has a reduced effect, given that she's composed of liquid metal.
  • Tainted physiology - Riesenlied's liquid metal is extraordinarily impure and, as a result, brittle and inflexible. This results in her physiology being quite weak compared to other metal demons -- she has about as much strength, agility and endurance as a normal person, and is incapable of transformation. As a result, she has to compensate with cunning, skill and tactics.

Odjn

"Ooooooooh when a person tries to kiss a girl
I know she oughta give his face a smack!
But as soon as someone kisses me
I somehow sorta want to kiss him back!"
-- Odjn, Drunken Stupors, Best of (vol. Filgaia 1)

Odjn is Riesenlied's lifelong companion and Metal Dragon, found deep within a mineshaft that had apparently struck proverbial gold when it unearthed the site of a battle dating back from the Metal Demon Wars. Odjn is a sassy smartmouth, always with a quick quip or a witty repartee to her so-called 'mistress', a term she uses in a rather vitriolic manner. She also appears to have a deep love for singing, especially from a genre that ancient records would show is the 'power ballad' genre. Odjn's smart-alec comments often conflict with Riesenlied's mild and collected manners, though perhaps in this case it is true that opposites do attract.

Odjn doesn't have many memories before Riesenlied found her -- and this is something that greatly troubles her. Sometimes, events and actions cause her to have painful flashes of horrifying memories. Unfortunately, they're too hazy for her to really remember the exact details, but she confides in Riesenlied that she feels worried she was involved in something horrible.

Relationships

Metal Demons

  • Zed - Ah, Zed, what will I ever do with you? More than anyone, his belligerence often gets him into trouble, but there is an earnestness in his actions that remind me of the Tainted. He has been good company for Odjn, and Odjn in turn seems to like him very much. Friendships like that are quite rare.

Humans

  • Catenna - She's quiet, but I sense a kind of wisdom that you wouldn't find around here. She has a connection with the land that other humans do not appear to have; what secrets could she be holding, I wonder?
  • Janus Cascade - The archetypal Drifter, and brash. I look at his eyes and see a kind of frightening ambition. Though my brethren would disparage humans for collecting ARMs, there is something remarkable about the way they adapt, much like the Tainted did...
  • Sephilia Lampbright - This young girl claims to be from 'Lunar'. I wonder if that claim is true? There is much I don't know about the state of the known world as it is. The times are rapidly changing...
  • Rudy Roughnight - I sense a sadness from this young man's eyes, but he seemed to be willing to do good. What is it that drives the virtue in humans?
  • Jacqueline Barber - More than anyone I know, Jay seems a very capable merchant. The system of trade and barter that humans have developed over the years is fascinating indeed.
  • Lynnai Albrek - She claims to be an acquaintance of Zed's. That man has scoured the fields of Filgaia more than I have... I hope that he does not run into bad company.
  • Ida Everstead-Rey - To be forced onto a role that you'd rather not undertake... in a way, I can understand that. Miss Ida, I hope that you do find your true calling in life, rather than be entrenched in the constructs that we've created around ourselves.
  • Claude C. Kenny - He does remind me of Zed, in a strange way... human boys will be human boys, as I often hear the saying goes.
