|Profile=If you see any trained monsters wandering around the Photosphere or going into battle, they probably belong to Malfi.  If you see any *rare* creatures while you’re out and about, she’d REALLY like to hear about it!  Drop by her office for “coffee” any time.  Malfi is ambitious and eager to distinguish herself in battle.  Her battleform is metallic gold with a black exoskeleton.  She has a strong sense of honor and takes offense easilyShe can be prickly.  She is vain about her long white hair and often restyles it, sometimes using hair ornaments or “trophies” from defeated enemiesShe likes to read during her off time and would appreciate books recovered from human settlements or ruinsYou can get on her good side by proffering scuttlebutt about unique monsters, books, hair ornaments, or really good coffee from human villages.  Some (sincere) compliments wouldn’t hurt, either.

|Background=She was constructed and raised a Metal Demon.  She participated in the raid on Arctica (fighting civilians)and even captured a few humans, but Lord Alhazred took all of them away before she could study them, which she still resents.

|Background=

Angry at Lord Alhazred, she did the only sensible thing – returned to Arctica Castle to get more humans!  (Handy thing, that Gate Generator!).  Alas, they were all dead or fled. Bored and looking for something to do, she explored the castle and retrieved some books from the library and some edibles and drinkables from the kitchens.  She turned out to not like human food but to love coffee.  She discovered more (unbrewed) coffee in storage but had no clue how to make it. (Good thing the bags were labeled and smelled like the delicious stuff). It took several weeks, but she finally tracked down a basic cookbook in the library and learned how to make it.  She has been working on synthesizing it, so far unsuccessfully.  She has gone back to the library several times and come back with more books each time.  She finds books about the Demon War very entertaining, especially for the misconceptions about her kind.  She has generously shared those with her friends.  Her technorganic brain has a built-in translator, but sometimes it doesn't work so well.

Early Life
Malfi emerged from her christening chamber on March 29, 469 PC and began her happy and uneventful life as a neonate.  She was raised on stories of Hyadean victory and the great debt they owed Mother and was once privileged to see the goddess's cocoon.  She excelled in school and in battle, under the tutelage of her elders -- or so she thought.  She started capturing and training Filgaian monsters, using shock collars to control them.  Her duties included placing monsters to be sentries/guards in places the Hyadeans wanted to protect, as well as providing monster slave-labor.

She spends her non-reading time capturing, taming and training monstersA few she treats as pets, but the rest are for the other Metal Demons to useShe has a staff of the smarter humanoid monsters with opposable thumbs which she uses for servants.  They are kept in line with shock collars (or whatever instrument would work anatomically for the nonhumanoids).  She has foisted maximum grunt work off on them and rejoices to never have to muck out a monster cage again! (She is smart enough to make sure the cage is *empty* before her staff clean itNo sense in killing the servants off after getting them all trained!).
Arctica and Adlehyde: The Ice and the Light
Malfi participated in the raid on Arctica, easily slaughtering the fat middle-aged courtiers and bureaucrats she was up againstThis led her to believe that humans were pushovers(Yes, it's a good thing the more seasoned warriors were battling the Fenrir Knights!).  She captured several humans to study, only to have them confiscated by Lord Alhazred, something she still resents to this day. When she returned to Arctica Castle for more humans, she found them all dead or fled, but the kitchens were open and abandonedThis was her introduction to coffee--something she is rarely without.

She was supposed to direct the monstrous troops during the First Battle of Adlehyde, but it was a disaster.  Believing her creatures sufficiently trained and obedient, she removed their collars -- only to have most of them run away and the rest turn on her.  Between recapturing some of them and mopping up, Malfi didn't have a chance to kill any humans.  She was reprimanded for this afterwards and still feels ashamed if someone brings it up.

She generally finds the Photosphere a boring place indeed and has recently started exploring ruins and such to relieve the ennui.  She has yet to realize the irony of treasuring her own freedom while chucking other creatures in cages, often for extended periods of time.  She ran across a nest of sleeping Wind Mice and actually managed to catch one with an ambush trap.  His name is Hraaki, he is very depressed and wearing a shock collar, and he can usually be found confined in one of Malfi's offices (she has two--one in the Photosphere and one at her zoo)She doesn't quite realize what a lucky break she got: Wind Mice are *extremely* difficult to capture.
Her life changed in the aftermath of Adlehyde when she heard Mother speak for the first timeThe goddess was no longer a myth or distant legend!

Pre-Lunar
Malfi provides monsters to be sentries/guards for places the Metal Demons would like to protect. She does not mistreat her charges, ever (though she does maintain tight discipline). Some of her captives have died from her ignorance, and she feels badly about this.  She is conscientious and tries her best to meet each creature’s basic needs (food, water, shelter, medical treatment). She might not notice psychological needs for sentients, though, unless explicitly told about them.
At Gylfaginning she first felt a Guardian's power (and its despite).  She still fears The Turtle (Schturdark).

She kept being defeated by humans (to her disgrace), and after one such incident Dean Stark dragged her to safety while Lords Alhazred and Berserk left her to bleed out, opening the possibility for her that humans were people.  She resolved to save a few for study before the encroaching genocide.

Malfi directed the monstrous troops during the Battle of AdlehydeHer superiors had already designated the monsters as expendable, so she took off their control collars before turning them loose, planning to reuse the collars later. It turned out to be a big mistake: about a third of the monsters ran away immediately, and a fraction of the rest turned on her.
Malfi also lived in Wayside for a time because it had more room for her creatures than her little menagerie near the PhotosphereWhile recuperating from a devastating attack from Ethius Hesiod, Malfi joined Fenrir and Yarobeleedt in informing Siegfried about Riesenlied's perfidy, leading to the destruction of Wayside.

On Lunar
Malfi was teleported to the Old Moon along with everyone else in Lost July at the time.  She'd never believed the stories about benevolent goddesses and invisible people -- or even that the Moon was inhabitable -- but here she was!  She spent most of her time in her human disguises of Cynwen, Tamryn, or Selwyn, and hated being forced to subsist on human-style food.  At least the Old Moon had decent coffee!  After scanning as many creatures and their ecosystems as she cound, she eventually helped establish a base in Lastonbell, Hive's Haunt, along with Ambrosius, Elvis, Kaguya, Kalve, Neriah Parringer, Yarobeleedt, and some others.  They attempted to, and perhaps succeeded in, sending a transmission to Filgaia using makeshift equipment.

Between rounding up and mopping up, she didn’t have time to slaughter any humans.  She is now working on finding a way to make the collars cheaper to manufacture. Disposable ones would be ideal…
Malfi engaged in an epic battle with the Hellion Ida Everstead-Rey, which the Hellion won handily, injuring Malfi and beating Yarobeleedt into a coma, leading Malfi to some disturbing reflections, as well as the forced retirement of her "Cynwen" disguise.  Malfi realized that Ida knew more about Hyadean culture than any human should have a right to.  She still doesn't know how this is possible.

From Azado,  Malfi was teleported back to Filgaia right in the middle of the Second Battle of Adlehyde.  While in Azado she attempted to scan Sin, but her scanner steadfastly refused to believe any life-form could be that big, so she didn't get any readings.

Malfi has recently relocated back to the Photosphere from Wayside after Riesenlied's proclamation (and a brief stint in the infirmary recuperating from one of Ethius' particularly nasty Symbological attacks).  She took Bogey (and a few creatures) with her.  The rest of her monsters were returned to the wild -- generally, wherever they came from.
Back on Filgaia: Mother's Awakening
Malfi fared better in the Second than the First Battle of Adlehyde, defeating Chime Isa so she could rejoin her kin invading the city.  The Hyadeans achieved their objective, destroying the Guardian Statue of Zeldukes, and the news spread among the troops -- Mother has awoken!  They all returned to the Photosphere triumphant and rejoicing.

Amid the joy, Malfi also got a shock -- all of her creatures were gone, turned loose (or possibly killed) because she was missing and presumed dead.  Her zoo is empty, all of its usable equipment and supplies claimed by others or recycled.  At least she still has Bogey, her Bear-Dog Metal Beast mount...

Recapturing and retraining all those monsters would be a Sissyphean task.  She needs to take her research in a new direction...

Malfi was present at Mother's first assembly, where she was gratified and relieved by the goddess's presence but somewhat...disconcerted by her fixation on causing pain.  Yes, the humans must be wiped out, but shouldn't they be executed humanely?

Malfi was shocked to find out Mother's real plans for her children.  She turned against her and joined others, including humans, in killing her.  She and Bogey (and perhaps some others) made it to an escape pod and jettisoned to the Arctican wilderness, where she promptly had a nervous breakdown (or the Hyadean equivalent).  Losing her home, her faith, her leader, and many of her friends was just too much.

Malfi turned against Mother and helped the humans and their allies to kill her.  She and Bogey made it to an escape pod, and she promptly had a nervous breakdown after it landed.  She was rescued by Jacqueline Barber and Ethius Hesiod.  Shortly after that she realized she was frequently rebooting, and this lead to a terrifying realization.  She withdrew to recuperate, splitting her time between reading and scouring the wilderness for Hyadean survivors.  She found that a good, hard fight took her mind off her problems and started fighting monsters instead of trying to capture them -- a rather unhealthy coping mechanism.  She was in her lair reading when so many people were transported to Spira, so she remained on Filgaia.

The Aquvy Archipelago
After some months Malfi traded labor for passage on a merchant ship to Aquvy for herself and Bogey, seeking Hyadean remnants further afield.  She arrived several weeks before the big Gear battle on the Great Sea, where she fought Kaguya.  She has been scouring Aquvy for Hyadean survivors of the Photosphere's destruction.  She has discovered several and has set them up so they can contact her (and each other) if needed.  Her PTSD symptoms have gradually resolved, but overwork has left her tired and haggardShe does not seem herself these days.

Malfi fought Ethius Hesiod aboard the Warwing Varukias, losing to his "Grave Dust" yet again.  She was horrified to find out he'd been hunting and killing Metal Beasts, and accused him of genocide.  He pushed her off the airship (with an abandoned, derelict airplane), and she was rescued by the eagle-like Metal Beast Orn, who was immediately added to Malfi's menagerie.

Ignas and Energy Nede
Malfi arrived in Ignas with a group of Drifters, all investigating the unusual light that had appeared in Ignas.  Rille Felis informed them about a mysterious space portal, the source of the light.  They resolved to investigate as long as they could avoid Kislevi and Aveh patrols.

*Scientific curiousity.  Malfi is always seeking out intriguing specimens.  If she's unable to capture a live one or procure a dead one, she'll settle for scanning it.  Her scanner also carries compact records of her databases.

*Electrical element. She absorbs non-magical Lightning attacks (though an actual lightning strike would probably kill her) and can sense non-magical electromagnetic fields.  Her Heal buff involves transferring bioelectrical life energy, and while it would work on Filgaians, they wouldn't find it comfortable, particularly if they have ties to the Guardians.  She has internal batteries to power these abilities.

*Sic 'em! She can also throw monsters at you.
*Bogey. Her Metal Beast Bear-Dog mount/companion has atypical programming for a Metal Beast.  He resembles a hairless steel bear with dog mannerisms (or perhaps a Vulcan sehlat without the fangs) and can be quite friendly when not in combat mode.  If he IS in fighting mode, watch for his bites, rakes, and bear hugs.  He is omnivorous to a fault, but like his master, prefers metals.  He will protect his rider at all costs.
*Adolescent Anti-Reality Bubble.  Take an Earth teenager.  Make them immortal.  See how the delusions of invincibility get even worse?  Yeah.  So far, she believes the propaganda she's been raised with, and she hasn't learned (much) critical thinking yet.  In spite of this she has a serious demeanor and comes across as older than she is.
*Orn.Her second Metal Beast, resembles a huge eagle.  Malfi dislikes flying, so she doesn't use him as a steed, but he's useful for reconoittering.  She often attaches a video camera to him and sends him out to spy on the terrain.  She is training him to carry messages.

*Standard Metal Demon Powers. Shapeshifting, regeneration, teleportation, levitation.  And you thought just making the teen immortal was bad...    Her shapeshifting is adequate enough that she can pass for human if she likes, though in a more petite form.  She can also adapt her senses, particularly her vision, to see ultraviolet or infrared.

*Damage sponge.  Her armored form adapts to battlefield conditions, on top of her already impressive hit points.  Her "armor" is actually part of her body.  It is alive. It has a pulse.  (Yes, she can unmanifest it at will).  She normally wears a surcoat over it.

*Hammerspace. Like every JRPG character ever, she somehow manages to stow away her oversized, overwrought weapon whenever she needs hand(s) for something else.  ICly, she probably just teleports it into storage and back.  Her backup weapon is a broadsword.

A dead death butterfly preserved in a glass jar; a Heal Berry for further study; a purple participation ribbon; several samples of Fell Dragon blood for analysis; a Gear in need of repair (This was reduced to its component metals and added to V4L-H4LLA's infusions.  That's right.  We ATE it).  One share of a footlocker full of gella. One meganut (planted behind her office in Wayside.  Hey, there's plenty of free water and manure: maybe it'll grow).

Malfi by Ainemswork small.jpg

Background

Powers and Abilities

Malfi is a typical tank-fighter, slow but strong. Her weapon is a lance (it telescopes). She adds the Electric/Lightning Element to most of her attacks. She is also notorious for “Net” attacks that Entangle and/or capture opponents. If she is monster-hunting, she will always have a way to immobilize the monster and transport it back for study and/or training. Her resources range from ropes and cords and muzzles to cages to force-cages to sedatives to stasis fields.

 • Scientific curiousity. Malfi is always seeking out intriguing specimens. If she's unable to capture a live one or procure a dead one, she'll settle for scanning it. Her scanner also carries compact records of her databases.
 • Huntress. Some of the monsters she pursues are wily, cagey, and/or powerful.
 • Traps, Snares, and Tranquilizer Darts. She has a variety of ways to capture her targets.
 • Electrical element.
 • Built for War. Don't let her status as a scientist fool you: she can hit hard.
 • Bogey.
 • Orn.Her second Metal Beast, resembles a huge eagle. Malfi dislikes flying, so she doesn't use him as a steed, but he's useful for reconoittering. She often attaches a video camera to him and sends him out to spy on the terrain. She is training him to carry messages.
 • Adolescent Anti-Reality Bubble. The bubble is gradually being punctured, as she's been defeated by humans several times now.
 • Kinsight. She can spot other Metal Demons, even when they're in disguise.
 • Standard Metal Demon Powers. Shapeshifting, regeneration. And you thought just making the teen immortal was bad... Her shapeshifting is adequate enough that she can pass for human if she likes, though in a more petite form. She can also adapt her senses, particularly her vision, to see ultraviolet, infrared, or distance; this also makes her resistant to Blind.
 • Damage sponge. Her armored form adapts to battlefield conditions, on top of her already impressive hit points. Her "armor" is actually part of her body. It is alive. It has a pulse. (Yes, she can unmanifest it at will). She normally wears a surcoat over it.
 • Hammerspace. Like every JRPG character ever, she somehow manages to stow away her oversized, overwrought weapon whenever she needs hand(s) for something else. ICly, she probably just teleports it into storage and back. Her backup weapon is a broadsword.
 • Google Translate. See notes above. The translation happens in her BRAIN, so she appears to be proficient at speaking and reading Filgaian (at least until the translator screws up). It is no help with ancient runes and such, though. She can update its vocabulary manually with a bit of concentration.
 • Portable Scanner. She is rarely without this.
 • Barista. After a year of preparing coffee at least once daily, she's pretty good at it. She has perfected a recipe for arnica latte, which helps with pain and speeds healing. She is using synthetic arnica, which is far less effective than the real thing, so the healing effect is light to moderate.
 • Rumor Has It. She keeps up with the latest rumors, though she disbelieves 95% of them.
 • Batman prepared. When Digging she carries a backpack full of useful supplies.

Relationships

Metal Demons and Other People

 • Alhazred. SCARY. She resents him very much.
 • Ambrosius. Not to be underestimated.
 • Berserk. Relieved he's dead, the big bully.
 • Boomerang. Admirable sense of honor. She doesn't trust Luceid, though, for being a Guardian.
 • Dean Stark. Clobbered her good, then dragged her to safety after Lords Alhazred and Berserk abandoned her to bleed out. She owes him a debt of honor.
 • Ebony Wings. Respects them but has steadfastly refused to join them. She agrees that using deceased Metal Demon parts to make ARMS is grotesque (and morbid).
 • Elvis. Brain AND muscles. A valuable ally.
 • Epsilon. Steel Panther, eh? Wonder if he can change into one.
 • Fenrir. She's a strong fighter who does not belong among the Tainted.
 • Gamma. Finally, someone younger than her that she technically outranks. Other than Yarobeleedt. Everybody outranks him.
 • Kalve. Could spend hours discussing the latest advances in our fields. Plus, it pays to stay on good terms with the medic.
 • K.K. She has not met him yet.
 • Lady Harken. Grateful she looks after her subordinates. More people should do that.
 • Neriah Parringer. Enigmatic and secretive. Has proven her loyalty, such as it is, on multiple occasions.
 • Noeline. Why would she throw in her lot with the Tainted?
 • Riesenlied. She was right about Mother after all. And I have more sympathy for the Tained now, having been one (for a time) myself.
 • Siegfried. Respects and is intimidated by him. He is a strong commander who expects results. [OOCly, he's a bad guy but he's also, y'know, right. Kind of like Magneto that way].
 • Yarobeleedt. Annoying but situationally useful. Bottom of the pecking order. His nickname for her is ^Creature Creature^.
 • Zed. He's very brave, or very foolish. Possibly both.

Specimens Malfi Would Like to Claim and Study

Drifters and Others

 • Animal. Are all humans so savage and unpredictable?
 • Arleph Ardan. Met him in passing. Is he really a Doctor of Symbology?
 • Ashes. She is really too young to be wandering around by herself.
 • Ashley Winchester No human should be that powerful!
 • Asteroid the Kid. Not sure if she's even human, or what happened to her if she is. (Malfi does not realize she and Lydia Seren are one and the same).
 • Avril Vent Fleur. A young woman who hangs around with Dean.
 • (Catenna). A dangerous shaman.
 • (Cecilia Adlehyde). Seen from a distance, she's a blonde shamaness who calls down the Turtle's wrath.
 • Chime Isa. She just HAS to be one of those super-annoying perky morning people. An elf with healing powers. Operates a pair of mean crossbows. Devastating "Arrows of Light" attack.
 • Citan Uzuki. Just a simple country doctor...
 • Cyre H. Lorentz. A tigerman with wind and light powers.
 • Dash Caskett. Don't think I've run into your species before. Whatever it is!
 • Elhaym Van Houten. Seen from a distance, in her Gear.
 • Gwen Whitlock. Sure seems to know what she's doing.
 • Hannah Curie. A Crest Sorceress.
 • Hicalu Wilwisp. Makes excellent muffins, especially the chocolate ones!
 • Hiro. Young and exuberant. Ruby is a dragon?
 • Iskandra Grendorre. She must be related to Mikaia.
 • Josephine Lovelace. She has a pet bird who may be more than she seems.
 • Kahm Yugh. Doesn't know his name but recognizes him as a dangerous opponent.
 • Kourin. Met her briefly. She has a well-trained, obedient dog.
 • Layna Manydays. So she's a pirate?
 • Leon Albus. A capable leader of the Black Wolves
 • Lily Keil. Scary!
 • Lydia Seren. A very unusual human. The horns suggest herbivore, but those teeth!
 • Lunata Croze. The very picture of despair.
 • Margaret. Mysterious.
 • Rille Felis. A furred, horned and fanged Beastwoman who's proven very helpful.
 • Scythe Riebaure. A potent sorcerer.
 • Sephilia Lampbright. Accompanied her to a ruin in Lunar. Doesn't know her well.
 • (Seraph Beast). What is this strange being? A sentient, floating statue?
 • (Seraph Lanval). An invisible(?) water person(?)
 • Shalune Amira. Has impressive mechanic skills.
 • Talise Gianfair. Accompanied her to a ruin in Lunar. Doesn't know her well.
 • Timu Guado. Very young to be adventuring on her own. I wonder if her parents know she's here?
 • Virginia Maxwell. Has very unusual companions/summons.
 • White Knight Leo. Her initial skepticism about those moon stories has been routed, now that she's actually BEEN TO Lunar.
 • Yulie Atreide Odessa is interested in her but won't tell me why.

Enemies

 • Ethius Hesiod. Is dishonorable and not to be underestimated. Nearly killed her with a dust attack during two altercations: 1 and 2. He's been hunting and killing Metal Beasts, even though I gave him the command words to pacify them. Xenocide.
 • Ida Everstead-Rey. A truly frightening human with mysterious powers. Kicked Malfi's ass and beat Yarobeleedt into a coma at the Nota Bridge. Malfi refers to her as "THAT WOMAN," or she did until the big escape from the Photosphere. Ida has earned her grudging respect.
 • Kaguya. Admits to being an alien, but what kind, exactly? Deceptively fragile-looking. Wish I'd had the chance to scan her; then I might've gotten some answers!
